Trying out new painter who was referred to us by a good former tenant.

Suppose to be painting all of 4 bedroom house.

Told us it would be a -4 day job. Yeah, sure. I know better.

Day 10--still working on house interior painting. Took off 1 day due to rain. ??

Took off 2 days that we did not at the time know about. Told us later that he was in court both days. Someone ran into his car and ripped off the bumper. ??

Job still not complete. He says that he will be done tomorrow.

WE stopped by yesterday. He was painting at the neighbor's across the street. The owner came outside and during the conversation with her she said that he told us that he would be painting in her house. Nope.

Is he a typical painter with excuses?

Is this his last job with us? If so I will miss his handshakes and hugs. ha ha

Fire. A landscaper was supposed to mulch along my fence. He gave half the mulch to my bad neighbor. I made him finish and then paid him and he is never coming back. --71.104.xx.xxx

Don't feel too bad, these things happen.

One friend wanted the exterior of her apartment building painted with some custom Venetian stucco work. I had an old time expert. But he came with problems. I explained that they had to make progress payments based on materials on the job and time spent. Only advancing money for receipts presented and hours worked each day during the week. As long as he's working, you can pay him his daily rate.

My friend spent some time on the phone so she thought she'd have her husband check on the work and make progress payments. Not explaining you should never give money in advance of work -- keep the painter on a short leash, otherwise he will take the money and run....doing work for other cash paying customers.

SO when the job was half done the husband had already advanced 100% of the estimate....the the excuses came why he wouldn't show up..

The wife blamed her husband. The husband blamed the painter. I blamed the wife for not explaining the terms of his employment and how the husband didn't ask the wife more questions. They had a communication problem, only married 23 years! --47.155.xx.xxx

Is this a handyman person claiming to be a painter? Doesn't sound like a professional painter.

I do it myself now but in the past they have always finished it in one day. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I can paint the interior walls and ceilings of a typical 4 BR house in a couple days. Add a couple days if a lot of doors, trim & sash is added. also add time for atriums and large stairwells.

I'm a retired painter but rarely paint my own now but I do supply the paint to assure the proper materials are used. I always get a firm bid and pay 85% upon substantial completion, with final payment after punch list, if any, is complete. This allows time to inspect for paint splatter after final cleaning, but I never hold painters final payment more than 2 weeks --97.92.xxx.xxx

I didn't have the doors and trim done when I hired people, just the walls, so yeah if they did all that too in a four bedroom house I can see it taking several days. But 10 days seems like someone dragging their feet and taking a lot of breaks. --72.188.xxx.xxx

MY experience is that is fairly typical contractor / handyman behavior. They are rarely organized people.

However, I've got a good painter and have used a good painter in the past and it takes a couple of days to do a proper paint job on a 3 bedroom house.

The first day, they come in and mask everything, remove all the lights, doors, curtain rods, and switch covers, and do any Spackle or repair wall texture.

Walls and trim are painted on different days.

Then back again after all the paint is dry to remove all the masking, replace the lights and doors, and clean up. --76.178.xx.xx

I always do a contract which spells out the expectations with an agreed on finish date and a per day penalty if he/she does not complete job by this date. I have learned the hard way...never give money up front-I buy the paint. May make a interim payment after 50% done-also spelled out in the contract. --72.240.xx.xxx

yep - last job for him.

I never give someone new a big project. Something small although that's never a sure look to the future.

He wouldn't have had two days off that I didn't know about. I'd have been there minimum of once a day, possibly twice. Five minutes of "checking to see if everything is going okay and if you need anything from me". --72.70.xxx.xx
