I need to pick up a few exterior doors to secure a project house I'll be working on next year. However, all the entrances are only 32" wide, and the in-stock exterior doors in my area are very limited. I can either get a boring ol' six-panel, or I can get a half-light, which is more like a back door than a front door. What I really am looking for is a 1/4 toplight at the top, so that it's got that curb appeal going on, but the light is up high enough that it's less likely to undergo damage at some point in its lifetime.

I've found a few that I liked on the Lowes website, but delivery isn't for six weeks. I found a few that I liked on the HD website, but delivery is three weeks out.

Before I commit to anything, does anyone have any online sources (or in the DFW area) with a good selection of 32" prehung front doors, preferably steel, a step or two up from basic blah, in the $400-$500-$600 price range?

(I love Seconds & Surplus for my cabinetry, but they focus on big, grand doors. I love Builders Surplus for my windows, but they're mostly 36" or 8' doors.) --137.118.xx.xxx

Are the doors currently on the house not usable until you start the project?

Have you considered opening up to a 36"?

What about a security door in the mean time?

Is it in a bad neighborhood? --73.120.xx.xxx

I have an oval leaded glass front door on my rental and have had no issues. --73.120.xx.xxx

Some of the current doors are usable, and others are just a nice thought---but I just like to get the outside looking cute until I'm able to get to working on it properly, so people can get used to thinking of it as a nice place instead of a crummy place.

Let me ask my guy about how easy it is to widen the door, because that will definitely make it easier to move couches/fridges/other big things through a wider space. --137.118.xx.xxx

The wider door is definitely better for moving furniture in and preventing damage to your new door and walls.

My house I live in originally had 34" doors. I would have had to had them custom made. --73.120.xx.xxx

I try to always have at least one 36" exterior door, and I prefer that to be the front door.

But 32" is a normal stock size door...I'm puzzled as to why you would have a problem finding them. --69.80.xx.xx

Several years ago, my local box stores stopped carrying anything except for almost entirely 36" doors in-stock. If you want something different, you order them from the website and have it shipped to the stores. But the wait times are just like for custom doors.

Code requires at least 1 door to be 36" wide. In my area 30", 32" & 36" wide exterior doors in wood, steel & fiberglass are all readily available. Frequently we';; either use an old door or secure the entrance with plywood until we're done with most of the demo & ready to install the finish door. --71.174.xxx.xx

Strange that Lowes doesn't carry a variety of 32" doors in your area. Locally, they carry both 32 and 36. You might check 84 Lumber, looks like there are several in the DFW area. BMC Building supply is another good source. --64.130.xx.xxx

Not sure if this is an option....but if it has a LH swing door could you change it to a RH swing? Not sure that opens up more choices at the stores.

Another option is to talk to a local new house builder to see if they have an extra door...although most new houses use 36" exterior doors. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I asked my guy if he could widen the openings to accommodate a 36" door. He said he could make it happen-- it will take a bit more work, but it can be done.

So I think that's the path I'll take.

Now to figure out door colors... :P --137.118.xx.xxx

If this is for re-sale, I'd order what I wanted and wait for them.

If it is for rentals, I try not to buy anything that is expensive to replace after tenants break it; like windows in the exterior doors. For rentals, I'd go with a good looking solid (metal) door and fancy it up by using a flashy quality paint job. --76.178.xx.xx

Often at the Habitat for Humanity restore there are used and some new interior and exterior doors. A visit to few different restores may turn what is required. --147.194.xxx.xx
