We are replacing the kitchen appliances in our own home and we have an 18-year-old Kenmore range that, besides having a scratched glass top, works just fine. I also have a property coming empty next month that will probably need a replacement range. Do I bother moving the 18-year-old from my own house over there or Is that just a waste of time? I don’t know how long ranges last these days. Thanks

I wanted to add that this is a “B”

property that rents at a higher rate than average. It currently has a cream colored range from 2006 that mostly just looks outdated. The range from my house is a much nicer stainless steel one, but it is old. The other appliances in this rental are stainless so I’ve been meaning to update the range anyway. --67.172.xxx.xxx

In an older apartment unit, absolutely. In a fresh remodel or generally class A unit, no. --70.44.xxx.xx

If it was a class c that i was selling i would move it there, class b that i was keeping then i would buy a new stove and fridge matching colors and i advertise that whoever gets the apartment picks the color white or black and they are happy to coordinate with the delivery driver and i dont have to do it --72.231.xxx.xxx

From what I see my housing provider friends do you should do this every 4-5 years, while the appliances are pretty fresh although everyone I know with electric has coils you can service - the glass tops are like glass slippers. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Yes. Dependable appliances are hard to get. Buy a new stove for your home. --99.203.xx.xx

I would take it over there, especially since it matches better.

The older appliances were made to last longer than the newer ones. I always get used when I can.

Congratulations on getting new appliances for yourself! : ) --70.160.xxx.xxx

I would move it over. Kick buying a new one down the road. Hopefully past Covid, as appliance availability is unpredictable. Maybe you can get one, maybe not. --64.222.xxx.xxx

Laura SERIOUSLY????

i'M MORE CONCERNED WITH KEEPING MAINTENANCE VISTS TO A MINIUM. When you put in 18 year old junk-- your just asking for problems.

When our stock pile of appliances ran out-- it hurt. We found a man who refurbishes appliances-- stoves gas and electric. For 175 I get a stove that looks brand new-- 60 warranty-- and he delivers-- yes even to my warehouse. Deluxe model for your home billed to a rental. "Fair" one for the rental-- also billed to the rental. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I'd just keep it in storage and use it to replace the next stove that breaks. I'd never get rid of a working appliance unless I'm upgrading the whole kitchen. --108.69.xxx.xxx

I like the 4 r's. Reuse, reduce, recycle and repurpose.

I love older Kenmore as they are usually made from Whirlpool. I have a refrigerator in my rental that is Kenmore and it is almost 30 years old. To my knowledge it has never been repaired. I would definitely keep it and use it but would try to buff out the glass top. --73.120.xx.xxx

I would also add that I am thinking that you might be wishing that you had kept old faithful in your home as the newer appliances don't seem to be as long living.

I am not like a lot of people though in that I do not have to have the latest and greatest. --73.120.xx.xxx

6x I love your point about the 4 r's.

There is a point in life that we should treat ourselves.

As an example-- from 1950 to 2001 I never had a new car. That's 51 years I let the 4R's rule.

Chrysler came out with the Prowler-- not an every day car but Iloved the East Coast look of it. Finally in 2001 I told my wife I want to get that car---- so I brought a spec house-- something I've never done before or since. After putting in 500.00 in repairs I sold it for 40K more than I brought it for and went to the Car Max and brought my car-- it was still wrapped in plastic.

So there is a point in life that if you want a fancy dancy stove for your home-- or whatever and you've worked for it-- ya gotta learn to enjoy at some point. I still have the car with 13K miles on it. --99.103.xxx.xxx

myob, I see your point.

I did that with my Ram truck that is now almost 19 years old. I don't want to buy another one though as the price tag hurts and it depreciates. I am hoping to get wiser in my decisions first as most of you have and then maybe I might play. I am hoping my next gift is another house. Due to my background I am actually happy with a simpler more down to earth life. Quiet honestly, I am glad I am. I still love my old 1910 2BR 1B home. My first home. I still like my truck if the Dodge part would hold together, LOL. The older I get the more efficient I am trying to become. --73.120.xx.xxx

6x I've been reading your posts -- you are very frugal.

Here's the thing-- you know in 20 years from now when you go look at the new truck -THE PRICE TAG WILL HURT AND DEPRECIATION WILL STILL BE A FACTOR.

19 years old? And a dodge? Well you've gotten 9 more years than most. For certain my concern would be getting stuck somewhere. Of course that can happen with a new truck but gees 19 years?

You have man reasons to get a new or newer truck for sure! --99.103.xxx.xxx

myob, I am planning on keeping this truck for life. Time will tell.

It has a 24 valve Cummins turbo diesel HO with a 6 speed manual transmission. It does have a computer in the truck but, other then the module on top of the fuel injector pump, it is an all mechanical engine. The manual transmission is cast iron and has Dana 60 and 70 differentials. The drivetrain should last fine other than replacing seals and gaskets as they dry rot. That is one thing I love about this truck. The Dodge part is what I really have to worry about as it lacks quality and the OEM parts will become obsolete. However, this truck is so popular and desired that there will be aftermarket parts available for decades, I would think. That is like the deuce and a half, it is mainly just heavy still parts that will last decades. Of coarse it is not a practical vehicle though except in military use or fun.

Sorry, I got off subject a bit. I got carried away as I love trucks. --73.120.xx.xxx

I just fixed the lid lock latch on my 20+ year old washer. Added a magnet because it wasn't pushing down far enough any more. I superglued the knob back on a couple of months ago. Why? I have four teenagers at home and run an AirBnb suite out of the addition. We're running loads constantly. I can choose water level and temperature, and a load is done in 23 minutes. I dare you to find a washer on the market built any time in the last 10 years that allows you to do even one of those with complete freedom. --104.230.xxx.xx

I miss being able to buy a washer that you can manually control instead of one that has been programmed by people who never do laundry. The new washer I got "hangs" at the oddest times. It has to be unplugged for hours before it can be reset. The reset procedure is ridiculous. This is one of the reasons I stopped providing washers to tenants. You never know what special "features" a washer will come with. I can do without the tenant calls. --98.122.xxx.xx
