In the state of california, can I put a lien on a tenants vehicle for backrent owed? --104.185.xxx.xxx

If your x-tenant owns more than 1 vehicle, you can obtain documents in a debtor's exam, not only can you put a lien on the vehicle, you can take legal steps to impound and sell off the second vehicle. I did that myself with an x-tenant with 3 cars. He claimed 1 car was his, 1 was his wife's and the third a child. All title of the vehicles were in his name and his insurance policy only had him listed as the driver... I put a line on the most expensive car that was paid off and got title, impounded the vehicle and held an auction....

You can get a “lien” on a vehicle only after you get a judgment. Once you have the judgment, you can execute against the vehicle. But you are subject to the exemptions, which is why Robert J talks about the three vehicles his ex-T owned.

Most of my tenants do not have paid-off cars. Mostly, they owe more than the car is worth. If the car is paid off, it is a worthless junker.

If your tenants have nice cars that are free and clear, give it a try.

My tenants all have really nice new cars, but there is no equity in them, or else the car is leased. You can't put a lien on a leased car. --76.178.xx.xx

Ditto what Oregon Woodsmoke said, my tenants generally either lease their vehicles, own a $hitbox, or owe more than I’d ever get selling it off after my costs involved in doing so. But if you have a deadbeat that owns more than their 1 primary vehicle, and it’s actually worth something, go for it. --173.48.xxx.xxx
