I am building a 5'x5' shower base with shower pan liner. The drain has a fancy add-on piece that added almost 2" to base of the drain level.
Traditionally I would use concrete mix to build up to the drain.. In this case, its on 3rd floor and I am looking for carrying minimum up there. I am looking for alternatives to fill the base, then add a 1/2" cement/sand mix to build the pitch etc.
Option 0. 7 - 8 bags 80lb. concrete mix (yuck!)
Option 1. I can fill with bunch scrap cement boards, then pour cement/sand mix.
Option 2. lay down 1" to 1.5" rigid foam boards, then pour.. (subfloor is solid, not sure if the foam board will ever compress.. )

When I build a shower, I never use a "liner"! They never last that long on upper floors in areas where the ground can shift there are earthquakes. Instead I will use the two piece 2" shower drain and do a hot mop....then test, fill in with cement. Then tile. --47.155.xx.xxx |

Consider looking at Schluter shower products where can build a complete shower assembly. View some videos on You Tube. --147.194.xxx.xx |

Relating to option 2. Dupont(Styrofoam Highload) and others make high compressive strength XPS foam boards that might be suitable for your application. I would look at the 40 psi board for this. --107.141.xx.xxx |

Not much you can do when the linear drain is much higher than the drain.. I guess the size 5'x5' made the mortar mix a decent amount of work and weight.
I will definitely look into XPS foam boards to make life slightly easier.. thx --71.117.xxx.xx |
