How does a heat exchanger develop a crack? Should it be repaired? Or should the complete boiler be replaced? One ballpark estimate is $4000-$5000 for new. Replace 1-4 cell(s) in approximately 30-year old Weil McClain boiler is $2000-$4000. I would appreciate recommendations. Thank u.

It can crack for various reasons. Age, dry fire, etc.
30 yr old system, I'd change the whole thing instead of just sections. --70.44.xxx.xx |

I concur with NE[PA], don't waste money on repairing a 30 year old boiler. Before deciding what to do check to see if your local utilities is offering any rebates. We just replaced 3 boilers & are getting back over $13k between the boiler & variable speed pump rebates. --71.174.xxx.xx |

Replace the whole thing.. 30 years, might as well get a newer better one because there will be plenty of things going out soon... If it costs more than half to repair over replace... go with replace.. for anything. --108.4.xxx.xxx |

Replacing a section in a 30 year old boiler where in six months other parts can fail. The heat exchanger is the most stressed out part of a boiler. Newer boilers are more energy efficient where increasing the efficiency even 10 per cent will save over a period of time. Consider insulating all the heating, hot pipes in the boiler area which is not going to cost much but save over a heating season. Pipe insulation is not expensive. Some boilers are connected to indirect hot water tank where the immersion coil is heated by the boiler where a pump is used for indirect hot water tank. A indirect hot water tank is more efficient as the standby loss is less then one degree per hour compared to 7 to 12 degree loss of a direct fired hot water tank as heat goes up chimney. A heating system is a investment where if efficiency is improved then the investment is paid off. Also have the system checked for leaks as hot water radiation is closed system that does not take fresh water which has oxygen which stresses a boiler. After a while the oxygen is used up. --147.194.xxx.xx |

Just replaced a boiler two years ago, high end of your estimate. Go with new. You'll likely get a longer warranty on the whole system than you'll get on the part. Our HVAC guy said the new parts are not as reliable as the parts made long ago....we are finding this with everything. Our plumber has to buy 3 parts to find at least one good one. --75.11.xx.xx |

Upgrading insulation, low E windows will reduce the heat loss which means the boiler will operate less where will last longer. Spray foam insulation seals out air transfer so heat transfer is less. Fiberglass insulation has air pockets where there is heat transfer. In the past buildings were poorly insulated where the solution was to install a larger boiler or furnace. Just chalking all the windows will provide a energy saving. If using copper finned radiators then cleaning out fins with a compressor will improve performance along with installing reflective tape on top of the fins. New gas boilers have vent dampers where only open when boiler is firing eliminating heat going up chimney when boiler is off along with electric ignition where there is standing pilot that burns natural gas when boiler is off. A packaged boiler comes with a new pump which is good option as boiler manufacturers buy a large amount of pumps. New pumps are water lubricated along using less electricity. --147.194.xxx.xx |

Your local plumbing supply house can sell you a new boiler from $1700-$2500 depending on size. I pay about $500 labor to install one plus extra for accessories like fittings, thermostats etc will run you another $2-300. Definitely replace and not repair. Dunkirk, New Yorker are some good brands available here. --76.125.xxx.xxx |

If it's that old I would replace. HOwever, one local homeowner online yesterday said that two companies told her that her heat exchanger was bad and letting out CO. Perri was one of them and the other a large statewide service. She called the gas provider, PSEG and a tech came out and found that her heat exchanger was not cracked or leaking CO!! I guess the guys from the national services make commissions. --71.104.xx.xxx |

Depends on the skills of the repairman, the old stuff does use more fuel but with new controls that can be controlled, you likely have to get new threaded rods and gaskets for each compartment, is the remaining plumbing holding pressure, if frozen there is the gamble - leak here then leak there, another leak -oops the ceiling below just fell down, the plumbing is more costly than the heating appliance and the plaster cleanup is very tedius so make sure you have everything tested well above the operating pressure before you open the -can of worms- and invest 6 times the boiler cost to get the heat sent around. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

Radiant floor heating operates at lower temperature then copper finned baseboards, cast iron radiators, fan coils. If using a high efficiency gas boiler then the boiler will operate at maximum efficiency. A high efficiency gas boiler efficiency gas boiler efficiency starts to drop at around 60 degrees Celsius or 140 Fahrenheit as the secondary heat exchanger will not extract heat. --147.194.xxx.xx |
