I generally don't do this because I'm worried they will do a shoddy job or show up late and neglect my job. If I think someone's bid is too high I just go with someone else.

But I am having a re-roof estimate done (not sure if I'm going to do it or not yet) and the person volunteered that "they might come down a bit if I needed it". I never asked them to come down on price though. It is a respected company that has been in business here a long time.

Would you try to get them to come down, since he volunteered the idea? Or is this a warning sign. I thought the trades were very busy right now because homeowners were doing more home improvement projects because of COVID.

Get in the habit of saying "Wow, that's ridiculous!" After their bid. And then shut up!. It works really good if they text you the estimate. Say that and then don't respond for a day. Nine times out of 10 they come down on their own without you asking them to. Don't do it if you know that it is a good price. Just tell them that you think is a fair price for both of you and go with it. --70.44.xxx.xx

A licensed professional contractor does not change their price, but instead changes the scope of the work adjusting the price downwards.

Example, will provide a concrete slab 20' x 25' x 4" with rebar -- Price $3,500.

Price to high: New estimate: will provide a concrete slab, 20' x 25' x 3.5" thick with wire mesh. Price $3,200.

See the difference! --47.155.xx.xxx

Robert J, you are correct. That's a good example too. However, if the average landlord/beginning investor hires this level of service each time, they'll be cash exhausted in no time.

I have the best hvac company here locally do all my heating system yearly service maintenance and emergency calls. I don't haggle that price with them. It's speed dial when they're needed.

I had service scheduled for a property and informed them of a new make/model of furnace in the building. Secretary said they have no record of that in their system and why didn't I use them to do it? I said because you guys are awesome on yearly maintenance and emergency service but simply outrageous on new installs.

She said really?

I said yes. I told her that I can get systems installed for easily 50% of what they charge. She didn't realize that, but se does now.

Know the level of service you need. Do you need the franchise? Or do you need the moonlighter? You don't use a brain surgeon to apply a bandaid. --70.44.xxx.xx

That's a clue that he needs work. I never ask them to negotiate for the reasons you already mentioned. I think he is saying that he would look at someone else's lower estimate and come down on price. --71.104.xx.xxx

What you alt to do is get them to give you a written estimate in detail as to what all labor and material it includes for the job and then negotiate the price and when you are supervising the job you make sure that you are getting what was written down for materials and labor. --73.120.xx.xxx

He's already offered that he can come down. So that means he is expecting a negotiation.

I would start with "J, you said when you gave me the bid the other day that you could come down a little if you needed to. How far off of your original estimate could you come?"

Then repeat the number he says back to you and wait and see what he says next.

Eventually ask "Are you sure that's the best you can do?" --70.178.x.xx

I use this "I'm a little budget minded at this time" or "got another number that i can yes too?" Sometimes the house has a budget not me but the house. "Can you help me out?" Or "to earn my business i need the price to be $XXX, will that work for you?" My mom use to say "what? $3k for a 3 day job? Thats $1000 a day, i dont make $1000 a day, how can you charge that?" --99.203.xx.xxx

Did you get another estimate? how does this compare? This may be his clue that he can try to match another price. Covid and time of year might be having an effect on business and he wants to keep his people working. I got a great price on concrete this spring. Much was shut down, I was ready to do this and it was off the beaten path enough that they got it done before anyone knew. I got a good price, they kept their people employed. The companies profit might have been less, but the cash flowed. --108.4.xxx.xxx

If the price is too high bring up the idea in a manner that they can relate to.

Tell them that you don't need a Cadillac job, you are looking more for a Chevy, but not a Kia.
