I generally don't do this because I'm worried they will do a shoddy job or show up late and neglect my job. If I think someone's bid is too high I just go with someone else.
But I am having a re-roof estimate done (not sure if I'm going to do it or not yet) and the person volunteered that "they might come down a bit if I needed it". I never asked them to come down on price though. It is a respected company that has been in business here a long time.
Would you try to get them to come down, since he volunteered the idea? Or is this a warning sign. I thought the trades were very busy right now because homeowners were doing more home improvement projects because of COVID.

boost up the price so you look good when you offer to do it for less....
That sounds like a winner.
Why not get another estimate though? --99.103.xxx.xxx |

I generally do not chip away at contractor pricing. If anything I get detail on the construction spec and can often get a better quality job then the contractor thought they could get away with. I did ask the sewer guy if he could work w me after an emergency repair. He came down to the 2200 from 2500ish.
I like the myob's thinking he'll look good, or he read you thinking you would say no thanks and really wants your business. Remember there can be a big gap between the salesman pitch and the work. Sometimes the estimator disappears and they have to 'adjust' the price. --99.203.xx.xxx |

Make sure the reduction in price isn't because of the reduction in the quality of the roofing material.
I'd still get estimates from a couple more roofers. --76.178.xx.xx |

Here it is very common where roofers use the cheap builders line of shingles which may last 7 years or less. Take some hot summer days where around 5 years shingles deteriorate. Doubt better quality shingles will last more then 10 years. When I drive around town seen many houses that are in the never ending merry go round where around 5 to 7 years the shingles are being replaced all over again. --147.194.xxx.xx |

J,
We talked about this on the MrLandlord.com Virtual Roundtable on Saturday.
Specs. Specify IN WRITING the brand, model, and color of materials you want, WHERE you want it, and copy/paste the installation specs from the manufacturer's website.
I get QUOTES, not ESTIMATES which can grow during the project.
BRAD
