I believe there is something to write on a check if you dispute the fact its not a complete amount and the person write on the check something like "paid in full" when its not.
Are we supposed to also write something to be able to cash it but saying its in dispute? --66.30.xx.xxx |

I would return the check and have them write another one with the proper amount. Whatever you do be careful, verbiage like that is often legally binding and can eliminate you chances of recovering the remaining amount. --174.196.xxx.xx |

Here's a whole page on the subject. Basically says don't accept the check.

When I saw the title of the comment I thought it was about incorrectly written checks. I loaned a "friend" some money. She paid me back with a check that had the amounts incorrectly written on purpose I am sure. The credit union would not allow me to deposit the check. No longer a friend. --24.233.xxx.xx |

I thought I remembered here a while ago that some people were advised (by a lawyer?) to write on the check something like "with reservation" or something similar that it would protect you that you would not be accepting any statement like "paid in full" --96.236.xxx.xxx |

I’m no lawyer, or a banker for that matter, but common sense tells me that you as the endorser cannot make any legal changes to a check. It defeats the purpose of writing and signing a check if the endorser can make changes after the fact. The safest thing for you to do is contact the debtor and have them cut you a new check, if they refuse and you cash it you may never recover the balance, (for what it’s worth, this can happen by simply not returning the check). Look at it this way, what keeps them from saying you verbally agreed to the terms, they then wrote “paid in full” on the check that YOU accepted, then you changed it after the fact? --174.196.xxx.xx |
