One of my rental properties has a vacant lot in the backyard. I have bought a 10 x 16 ft. shed for this lot so that I can store some of my large misc. tools. This shed sits on concrete cap blocks and the distance from the ground to the entrance door floor level (rise) is approx. 9 inches. I need to build a ramp so that I can drive my 450 lb. riding mower up the ramp.
Question: How would you build this ramp? What size PT lumber would you use? How long (span) would this ramp need to be?
Does the ramp need to be built to the same specs as a wheel-chair ramp? --68.63.xxx.xxx |

I'd make it 6ft long and use 2x8 for the support joists depending on width. Minimum 4ft wide. Use 2x6 decking. using the 8 inch boards for the height-- will give you a perfect lip where the deck meets the shed using 2x6 decking. --99.103.xxx.xxx |

Howdy Roy,
I'd use 3 runners of 2x10 with a piece of 3/4 plywood. Cut runners as necessary. About 6 feet long should be enough as the mower will have plenty of power to climb it.
Or you could just use a couple of 6 foot 2x12 boards and put them in the shed after each use.
If you don't want to build a ramp, some stores carry those metal ramps that are used to reach the bed of pickup trucks of little trailers for less than $100.

I'm as lazy as the day is long.
When you wrote 9", my thought went to landscape timber materials like 6" by 6" or those less expensive landscape ties.
I would be tempted to make a boarder from the landscape pieces and then fill the center with dirt, rocks, broken slate. IN other words all the materials that seem to show up everywhere for free.
If you build with wood. You can easily use 2/6 framing. The reason being, make the two by six joists land directly under where the wheels of the lawn tractor will pass.
I would make the ramp as long as it can be so long as it doesn't look ugly.
A longer ramp is better for many reasons and can easily have added supports from underneath. (Thereby cutting the actual span of the material).
This by the way is listed as a very fun project.
I'm jealous. --108.28.xx.xxx |

I think a used shipping container would be more secure as Robert J has mentioned before. --73.120.xx.xxx |

Depending upon the clearance under your mower, I would be inclined to build either a 6' or an 8' ramp out of PT lumber. You don't want the mower or other equipment bottoming out going over the threshold. I would use some PT 2x6's with a PT 2x4 glued & screwed to the bottom like a T. On the shed below the door attach a PT 2x6 so the top of it is about an inch below the threshold. Attach one end of your T's to this & bury the other end in the ground so they re just about flush with the ground. I would make 5 T's & place them about 12" oc. Attach a sheet of 3/4" PT plywood or a sheet of Huber Roof Zip to them & try it out. If you find the ramp become slippery attach traction strips to it. --71.174.xxx.xx |

I got a commercial steel one from a company in Illinois when my mother could no longer get out of the house except in a wheel chair. They make them to your specs after they get a photo of the space it needs to go. This one is not quite to code with the rise but it has corrugated surface, think teeth, sticking up for traction. Has a slope off the porch, a landing and then a slope down. Came on a truck and local contractor assembled it for me and it is on concrete cap blocks also. It would screw down to the wood of the shed and you might have to adjust the door for clearance or they will adjust the edge of the ramp by cutting off some of it so the door will clear. There are also "suitcase" ramps that fold up but one that size would be impossibly heavy. I will check to see if I can find the company I used but there have to be a lot of them. I did not need a permit or an inspector or any of that because it is detachable. --71.104.xx.xxx |

Thank-you Steve (MA)!!! I can tell you have actually built a ramp before! Your reference to my mower deck bottoming out at the threshold is real and this happens sometimes when I ride up on my 5x8 utility trailer which has a 5ft. steel mesh hinged ramp on it. I have to remember to pull the mower deck all the way up before riding up on the trailer with it. I will be building an 8ft. ramp that is less steep than the trailer ramp is.
Ken- Yes, it is a Class C hood but not all Class C people are thieves and hoodlums. This shed will not be visible from the road. I have good tenants in the house and adjacent garage apartment and they will call me if anyone suspicious is lurking in their backyard. Plus, I have insurance and that keeps me from living in fear that someone may steal from me. Plus, the stuff in this garage is not new or in accounting terms "fully depreciated" if you know what that really means.
RB: I forgot to mention that building a ramp is not rocket science. --68.63.xxx.xxx |

Name of the company is Handi Ramp. Still had a label on the side from 20 years ago. They have a nice website with lots of photos and their phone number is 847-616-8504. I had to crawl under a bush to get this. I would prefer this to wood which will let you down when you least expect it. The teeth keep it from icing up too bad also. --71.104.xx.xxx |

Ally M my dear - At your age, you don't need to be crawling under bushes just to get a label off a ramp. Are you about 90 now?
Now, I did look at the Handi Ramp website and that company does make some really nice commercial grade ramps. Those ramps are nice, however, they would be the first thing to get stolen since those ramps are made from a high grade of aluminum. --68.63.xxx.xxx |

If I were to have the same type building to store my zero turn in, I would want a concrete ramp. I believe I would want it about 8-10 feet long. A longer ramp should cut down on the transition bump. Being such a small ramp, it would be an easy diy project with one helper. Keep in mind a yard of concrete will cover 81 sq feet at 4 inches thick. Of course I would add fiber to the concrete as well as rebar for a long lasting ramp. I would imagine you could get a single yard delivered for about $225, if you bought a 5 yard truck, at least around here you are looking at about $125 a yard. --66.169.xxx.xxx |

Roy,
475 lbs plus Roy! So make it an even 500.
This is a thief's dream come true - tools, machines, back lot, no one, sleeping neighbors, plywood walls...
My Corvette was stolen from a shared driveway. The neighbor 50 feet away said "Yeah, I looked out the window and saw some guys looking inside the car at 6am (in the dark) this morning, but I don't bother nobody."
Minutes later the car was gone.
I suggest a SimpleSafe alarm - no internet needed.
OR
video cameras if the house wifi will reach it. Pay the res a few bucks to log on to his internet.
Oh, and increase your insurance & reduce your deductible! Gonna need it.

When done, lock the ramps up in the shed. Cost $149.

Brad20K - It does not surprise me your Vette got stolen. Any Vette, regardless of age or condition, is a highly sought after item for any car thief.
RobertJ - I will check out Harbor Freight for those ramps you mentioned. However, 72 inch or 6ft may not be long enough. I learned yesterday that my rise with cap blocks, will be 13 inches. A 9 inch rise would be with no cap blocks underneath.
Allym: My sincere apologies on guessing your age. I had always assumed you were the most senior LL on this forum. At 74, yes, go ahead and crawl under those bushes all you want to.
Homer: No to poured concrete for a ramp. Reason: this shed may need to be moved to another location in the future and I do not want a massive concrete ramp left behind. This shed is portable but a concrete ramp is not. --68.63.xxx.xxx |
