New term - ads popping up on my internet.

School-cation.

Since parents AND kids are working online why no do it from a 5 star resort with massages and beach?

Big name hotels are offering tutors to help the kiddos in spaced small groups with great wifi.

Adapt or die!

My kids are generally doing well with the "school-cation", but I know some that aren't. Parents who haven't got a clue and/or who aren't at home to watch their kids to make sure they do the work. Some of these kids will be left behind. There may have been a teacher at their school whom they respected and/or who could motivate them, but that connection is now mostly gone. No way to tell how things are going. I taught public HS for 5 years, and I'd always keep an eye on certain kids, in between classes in the halls, before/after school gatherings, but now that's all gone...replaced by the chaos of tiny screens via Zoom.

Think of this too--if this at-home school experiment succeeds, what does that mean for kids going to the traditional public school? Why the need for massive buildings that gobble utilities and require a huge staff and maintenance crews? Why the need for a school district to have 1,000 teachers on the payrolls when you can have one highly qualified teacher who is not only a subject matter expert, but who is also recognized as an expert in actual teaching. Lecture subjects like math, English, Science, etc. can be recorded and have the students do the work at home and touch base with a handful of subject matter experts/tutors as needed when they have questions. Maybe have 1 or 2 "lab" days per week for the sciences: that's about all the time we had when I was in school. Most days were lecture, notes, quizzes, and tests. All of that can be done online far more efficiently (and cheaply!).

Some people today are doing 100% online learning, and apparently thriving. The Teaching Company produced "The Great Courses" where you can get information presented by world-renown scholars from top universities. Could that same model be adapted for High School and Middle School? Possibly Elementary School? I think to some degree, the answer is 'Yes'. We're proving the concept and working out the bugs right now.

I'm surprised the teacher unions aren't howling louder about insisting on more in-person time. If this experiment is even marginally successful, the questions I've asked above will be tossed around in budget meetings when funds are slim.

Interesting times! Yes, adapt or become irrelevant. --107.216.xxx.xxx

And as online "working the bugs out" is perfected, maybe our property taxes could go down as in person schooling is a hefty line item.

Continuing into college years...tuition "free, or much less" tuition could become a reality. --75.11.xx.xx

We do get rolling quarantines, but in general, the students are fine and going back after a few days at home. --67.43.xxx.xxx

Make no mistake, online learning, at least for high school aged students down will never replace in class learning. This is just a ploy for teachers to not have to do their jobs. They need to get back to work like the rest of the country, maybe if they are told they will not be paid if they don’t return to the classroom they will have a change of heart. --174.196.xxx.xx

I am impressed with the creative adaptation on the part of the hoteliers. (Cool word I learned from watching HOTEL IMPOSSIBLE!)

Making lemonade out of lemons.

Find what your customers want and let them pay you for it. They want to travel, the hotels need customers, and the pandemic has made possible a new form of travel!

If cruise lines coudl connect to the child's home school...

I think apt LLs should promote strong wifi.

Airbnb should promote desks and quiet environments.

I am so glad that my hubby retired a few years ago, after 35+ years of teaching high school. He was a dedicated educator, putting in long hours after school hours. That time was spent both in giving anyone who asked for it extra help, and also counseling kids. He could eventually "read" his students, and would look out for them even when they were no longer in his classes.

This impersonal distance teaching would drive him nuts. He'd put in even more hours (between giving private tutoring sessions and learning how to deal with digital technology, which he barely tolerates).

Please don't be quick to assume that all distance learning teachers have it easy. Friends still teaching are having more duties dumped on them, with pitiful assistance from administrators. Many are burning out, and it's mostly the dedicated professionals.

End of rant. --96.227.xxx.xxx

My kids are in county schools and will be going back next week. Up to this point, virtual school has been a joke. 2-3 hours a day. Tech issues left and right for the teachers. Kids learn very little if anything without parental oversight, which is tough for working parents during working hours.

Sid, the teachers unions will never go for thinning the herd. Never. Someone mentioned property taxes going down if schools could leverage technology to reduce head count, buildings, maintenance, etc. Not in a million years. --75.90.xxx.xx

We pulled our kids out of bricks and mortar due to mandatory masks all day. We are running a duel curriculum with the districts cyber and master-books.

My wife is in groups on Facebook with other cyber moms and everyone is having the same complaints. It's cumbersome, brutal and agonizing to get the kids focused to go through it.

With our districts cyber, it takes 3-4 hours per kid. Masterbooks 45 minutes to 1.5 hours per kid.

After first semester we're pulling kids from district entirely and going with the alternate.

Then we can school-cation completely. --70.44.xxx.xx

Remote learning is absolutely a joke, anyone that thinks it’s a good idea either doesn’t have kids, or is 1 of the teachers pushing for it! I have heard horror stories as a result of this whole debacle, as well as my experiences with my kids from the end of last year. Fortunately we send our kids to private school and they were back in classrooms in September. The only people that benefit from remote learning are the teachers that are pushing for it. If a parent felt they weren’t comfortable due to unrealistic concerns over COVID they already had a remote online option, it’s called K12. There is absolutely no reason to force an entire school to use an online format. The teachers pushing for it should be fired and replaced with educators that are willing to do their job. If a teacher feels it’s “unsafe” for them to return to a classroom setting then they should get a job with K12 or something similar. Maybe these teachers should share their paychecks with all their students parents that are being forced to work for free as a teachers aid --174.196.xxx.xx

My nurse friend says with respect to COVID, the numbers just don’t add up. That’s the consensus where she works. Interesting.

The schools here are open or online, depending on the district. I agree that funding/property taxes should be reduced and applied to parents that have to stay home to assist their children.
