We have a small unpaved/crushed limestone parking lot at our four-unit. We need to mark out parking spots to make sure the space is used efficiently enough so that everyone can fit. We've tried spray-painting lines, but that only lasts a month or two. Any ideas on how to do this better?

Just an idea.

Get 10 ft 4 x 6's

Put at the head of each space or what would be the urb.

Drill holes and secure with a piece of rebar.

On the last 4" of each end.

Paint white to represent where a line would be.

I take my large Roto-Hammer and drill a 2" hole in the asphalt, dirt, concrete or any surface to mark the spots. I make them stand 2 feet from the wall and placed between spots. I then hammer in place a 8 foot tall chain link fence post, putting it 2 feet into the ground. I cover the lower 3 feet with pipe insulation and spray paint the post and insulation with yellow reflective paint. --47.155.xx.xxx

Dig shallow trenches where you want the lines and fill them with a different color stone (like crushed asphalt), lines of old bricks, or concrete. You could also get some cheap mis-tint paint and pour it liberally down through the stones, the paint should act somewhat as an adhesive to the stones to hold them together for a longer shelf life than spray paint. --64.130.xx.xxx

Long term solution would be to pave it and paint lines. I'm sure thats going to be a mess in the winter shoveling snow off the gravel. --66.30.xx.xx

I agree with placing some sort of markers up along the bumper rail. Painted wood, like RR78 said, or better - brightly painted poles that stick up farther & can be seen easier.

I was also thinking to dig out strips where you can insert brick or some other contrasting material that is less likely to move than stone. Perhaps even insert strips of PT 2 by the ground. Then paint them a bright color later. That sounds like a lot of work, though.

How bad is the problem? Will they even "obey" the lines? (have looked around in a parking lot lately & seen all the crooked cars over the lines? : ) --70.160.xxx.xxx

How about big wooden railroad tie type garden edging? I have that along a property line to keep an aggressive neighbor in his place.

It would have to be watched so it doesn't become a tripping hazard though if frost heaves it up. I like the idea of that RR78 has. --71.104.xx.xxx

Robin,

We use cement parking bumpers like the mall, City Hall... VERY heavy and secured with 3' of rebar driven down thru the holes. We tried the plastic ones but they looked awful with time.

People understand THAT is the sparking spot.

And assigned spots with a sign or sticker on the cement bumper.

Also, clear instructions during New Lease Orientation and firm reminders to offenders.

It's a shame parking is always such a problem.

Excavate and sink 6x6 pt landscape timbers into the ground to delineate where each spot ends. --70.90.xx.xxx

LOTS of great ideas! Thank you all! I think I'll combine the embedded landscape timbers with the cement parking bumpers. And start towing the nonresidents.... --65.28.xxx.xxx
