Cameras were recently installed at a multi. Not because I’m worried about my tenants, the neighbor is a problem. Anyway, I thought the cameras just weren’t working because from 7am ( when 1 set of tenants leave for work) until almost 3 pm nothing triggered a motion or person detection. It turns out the cameras are working, the tenants aren’t. I watched it all week. Only 1 set of tenants in the whole building leaves for anything more than a few minutes. I know the tenants that leave personally so I know they are working. The rest usually wander out to Dunkin for a coffee run in the afternoon or come back with take out for dinner and then head right back in. I’m not complaining because ( so far) everybody is paying rent, but at least now I know why the water bill is so high. One of the units is less than 300sf. I would go nuts in there. It must be a millennial thing. I know that Covid closed a lot down but this is just weird.

They are working but working remotely. Watched my husband and daughter do that all Spring/summer and they barely got away from screens to eat lunch. I would never last at a desk job. --73.17.xx.xxx |

My son is one of those. He lives in Austin in one of those 300sf condo's downtown. The company he works for closed their office and had everyone work from home (which now is permanent). He gets everything delivered from groceries to pet food. His social life consists of on-line meetings and games with friends since the beginning of the pandemic. His living quarters and lifestyle would drive me absolutely nuts but he is managing for now. He's said he is going to move into a bigger place in the future though since he has to work at home now. In his words, it's really hard to have an office in a 300sf place. It sounds like there are others like him. --64.130.xx.xxx |

I considered that, but they are service workers. Not work from home kind of jobs. Maybe they switched it up though. --68.118.xxx.xx |

Rents,
A friend was making $1000/week TO STAY HOME on unemployment from a big name company until just recently. Sleep in, Netflix, work on his car...

I think employees need to be compensated a stipend for working at home. Yes, they no longer need gas $$ and they save on whatever their commute time is but they are using their space, their utilities, their kitchen/dining room table, etc. If they live in a small space, have roommates or have children, they probably don't have the luxury of shutting the office door - instead they work in the middle of their "life" and need to accommodate for that.

Nicole, they have jobs. Better than not having a job. And if you are working from home for the benefit of your employer you can claim the home office deduction.
My son and his wife bought new desks, printers, headphones, etc. Company didn't pay for it, but they didn't care - said they wanted to be comfortable in their own space. And it may be tax deductible, they'll have to ask their tax guy. --50.82.xxx.xxx |

Plus - they have both come to enjoy the work from home freedom. Throw a load of wash in, come back and answer a call. Throw it in the dryer. Fold while talking on headsets.
And they have a new baby at home, and take turns passing him around because no way he's going to day care at 3 months in the middle of Covid. --50.82.xxx.xxx |

my oldest is the exact opposite. Her husband works third shift and sleeps during the day. She has two middle school/high school kids. They are home three days a week and she is home five days. She doesn't allow the kids to do school work in their bedrooms because, frankly, they'll never stay on task. Home office deduction is so minimal and it also means they'd need to then itemize a tax return so no benefit there. Their house was the perfect size for their busy life style. It's not the right size for the fitting school and office into it.
Sorry - if you're employed, they need to give you a place to work and not expect you to adjust your entire life to make it work for them ... this has nothing to do with pandemic - this has to do with companies found a door ajar and pushed it wide open. --72.70.xxx.xxx |

Small, no worries there. He knows my house rules which includes earning your rent at $8/per doing the jobs I give you. It would be fun for me and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't last long. --64.130.xx.xxx |
