Where I live there is a steady stream of retirees hoping to move here, but this area is too expensive for them. I keep recommending that they look further east, because I know there are areas where rent is a lot cheaper than here, but I don't actually know where those towns are.
Where is rent cheap enough for seniors on social security or other retirement pensions? They come around here trying to find pretty scenery, safe living areas, friendly neighbors, and things to do, but they don't need jobs and they don't need good schools.
There have to be towns near mountains or lakes where rent is low, probably because jobs are scarce.
Many of these people sound like they might be good tenants , at least superficially. They aren't presenting any red flags, except that they can't come anywhere near affording the cost of rent in this area.

I'm not sure if you are just asking a rhetorical question here, but....maybe somewhere like the upper peninsula of Michigan (UP)? It is scenic there but remote and gets very cold so there is little danger of it becoming popular and the next big thing that gets overrun. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

There is no cheap rent in Northern Michigan unless you find a run down place and make a deal.
There are plenty of articles on low cost living overseas as an expat. Some of them say you can live comfortably on social security.
I think the real problem is that many people did not plan for retirement and now social security is all they have. Social security was NEVER designed to be enough to retire on. It was designed to be a SUPPLEMENT to money that you saved during your working years and the investments you were supposed to make and your pension, if you got one.
Instead, advertizing encouraged people to "Have it now". We were encouraged not to be thrifty but to be headonistic, to enjoy life, to live large and show off and not to worry or plan for some distant day.
And tens of millions bought into that. And they still do.
When they can't afford to live in a nice, beautiful, safe place surrounded by nice people, they act like it's someone else's fault.
I'd suggest these foreign countries to them, or possibly to double or triple or quadruple up to afford something. The days are over where you get a nice beach house in a great area for $200 a month just because they want one or feel like they deserve it.
I honestly feel sorry for those people who had genuine bad luck or sickness as in those cases it's sometimes not their fault. Still though, we are supposed to have a plan and an emergency account in case the unexpected happens. --75.7.xx.xx |

I think much of South Carolina would work. Not the popular coastal areas but some of the towns off I95 and further west. Not a place I'd choose to live -- it looks very bleak driving through -- but it looks like someplace that would be cheap to live in and it has very mild weather. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

If I had to guess, I'd pick a "desirable" spot--- and then see what rents look like an hour's radius away from it in all directions.
The difficulty is, when you get into the rural areas, there's generally less supply because-- you guessed it-- there's not a lot of jobs in low-population areas, and so the areas are stagnant. So that means that housing doesn't routinely come available in the same way that it does in metropolitan areas, where people come in for 2-5 years, and then go off to the next place.
When we first moved to my (poor, rural) area, there were exactly three places available in a 30-minute radius of where we were looking--- small towns in between two larger population centers. One was an overpriced 3-br. One was a bank building from the turn of the century-- a beauty parlor and living space had been converted out of the back offices, but the front was still a bank (complete with vault) and the upper floor was still in it's original 1910's condition. One was a church complex. And one was a normal 3/2/2, where the previous owner had died, and it had sat unsold for 2 years. That was the one we snagged...
We later learned that housing in this area is tied to oil and gas. When oil and gas are expensive, there's nothing to be had. When oil and gas are cheap, there are usually 5-10 options. We were in the days of $5/gal gasoline at the time, so that was why we were having trouble finding anything remotely useful.
So that, and elderly people dying, are the two best ways to find a house for sale. Finding a house for rent is going to be way more of a chore, just because the demand isn't there, so not a lot of people are risking being part of the supply--- because the renters who swim in that pool aren't the sort most people would deliberately build a business catering to. --137.118.xx.xxx |

One half of Americans have essentially no savings at age 65. One half. The average social security check for a single person is about $1,500 a month for a single person and $2,500 a month for the couple. Try to live on that.
Many rural areas are not ideal for seniors. While rents may be low, selection may be scarce, healthcare hard to find and long travels to a specialist. Public transportation is nearly non-existent in many rural areas.
Their best bet is to try to stay close to where they are, family, etc., unless they live in an especially expensive area. I’d suggest they put their name in for public senior housing in their current areas. It may be their only realistic choice.

Elliot Lake in northern Ontario there a lot lower rent apartments where a lot seniors live. Winter weather is very severe there. Vacancy rates in most urban areas are low where at one per cent or less as rent control did not work. Property taxes on rental units is higher then luxury condominiums along with all inclusive high costs for utilities including the 13 per cent HST on electricity, natural gas. There is long waiting list to apply for government owned subsidized rental units. No matter who owns or rents the cost of housing is always going to be expensive. --147.194.xxx.xx |

Oh--- I live in a cheap area (no mountains, no lakes, no scenery). When I first started, one bedrooms would rent for $3xx, two bedrooms rented for $4xx, and three bedrooms rented for $5xx/month.
Even so, no one with a $750/month social security check can afford three times the rent on any of those.
A lot of them end up in hotel rooms--- about $450 for the month.
That was one of the motivators that got me thinking about rooming homes--- because there's a lot of elderly people who don't have sufficient income to run a household. But I still haven't jumped into that kind of experiment yet. --137.118.xx.xxx |

In my college town (same place as Sisco), you can find an efficiency for $350 - $450, depending on age, a one-bedroom for $400 - $800 depending on age and amenities, and a 2 bedroom for $450+ depending on age and amenities.
My least expensive 1-bedroom is $410, was built in the 1940s, and probably costs $100 a month to heat in the winter, and uses window shakers for AC. My new ones are renting for $675 - $700 and have lower utilities.
I WISH all the social security applicants received $1500 a month around here! That would make it simple for me! I'm used to people on disability who get about $750 applying and dont understand when I tell them they don't qualify. --67.43.xxx.xxx |

Western PA has some areas that are between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg where rents are on the low side, but the amenities of the cities aren't too far away. Indiana, PA, for example, is a college town and a county seat - 1 bedroom apartments that are not close to the university are about $450, according to apartments.com. The weather is on the cold side in winter, but not as harsh as Ontario or Michigan's U.P.! --96.227.xxx.xxx |

JR ME. Your comments about rural areas near you is applicable to rural areas in SC.
J FL. I lived in the Tampa Bay area for three years. I will take SC any day. FRIENDLY people.
I live in SC west of I-95 in a rural area - bleak as you called it and to some it may be.
Young people move away because of no jobs - security is ok, - most of the quality health care is 50 to 75 miles away in the larger towns/cities - public transportation is minimal.
BUT If you like friendly people, mostly conservative - less traffic - hunt / fish / play golf all are not too expensive - mild weather - cost of living is reasonable – housing in the small towns is very reasonable.
SS and a small pension may work in rural SC. In last three years three families no children - Ohio, Michigan and Florida have moved with in six miles of my house. Shocked me.

You said, "but I don't actually know where those towns are."
Perhaps you could try the following : Type in your question in plain English into the Google search bar and check out the links that show up. I have found many useful websites that way.
If you go to travelmathdotcom , click on the link Places (top right hand corner) , click on Cities, Get major cities,near/in Idaho Falls, Idaho and then click on Calculate, you will get a very nice web page listing major cities near Idaho Falls, even a map AND a list of Local towns near Idaho Falls, ID.
There is another website that draws a map even for the local towns but I cannot find or remember the name of that website now.Maybe you can find it by searching for "best website for finding nearby towns"
This website may be useful too : sparefootdotcom/self-storage/blog/2864-find-the-right-neighborhood-in-a-new-city/
Once you have the name of a small town, you could search rental properties in that town on zillow, apartmentsdotcom, trulia. Trulia provides streetviews, and a map of the crime situation around a rental address.
Just trying to be helpul. All the best in your searches. --65.188.xxx.xxx |

We used to point them at Texas but too many Californians have moved to Texas and driven prices up (sorry, Texas).
These are mostly people who can afford $800 - $1,000 a month in rent and 30 years ago, rent was less expensive in Idaho and people still want to believe it is still true. But we've had too many Californians move here, driving the price up.
Those folks are priced out of even the small towns. If they do find a small place for $1,000, it won't be $1,000 for long as prices are going up pretty sharply. If they are fixed income, it is foolish to spend the money to move for a crummy little apartment that they won't be able to afford two years from now. --76.178.xx.xx |

I'm going to say this in defense of the SS crowd. When they first started work, that $1200 a month pension that they were paying into and expected to get would have supported them quite nicely, if they took even moderate care with their budget.
All the government caused inflation has eroded their purchasing power so that the pension they paid into all of their working lives will no longer support them.
Of course, they are people who could not see into the future. They are tenants. If everyone planned for the future, we landlords would be out of business. --76.178.xx.xx |

We have rental apartments in a small town in Indiana. We have to turn down quite a few older folks, just because their Social Security checks won't cover the 3X rent rule for $600 apartments.
Otherwise, they might make good tenants (quiet, pay their bills, etc.).
I don't know what folks are going to do in the future. It will only get worse.
To complicate things, this small town keeps building more and more apartments, so there is a glut of apartments and a smaller pool of eligible, desirable applicants. --209.132.xxx.xxx |
