What do people on here think about the different mulch colors available? On another forum -- one popular for home improvement advice -- I was surprised to see people saying red mulch is "tacky" and "only for gas stations".

To me a very dark mulch just looks like a bunch of piled dirt and that kind of defeats the purpose if you're trying to improve the landscaping.

I use "natural" mulch - from my own compost pile, from a compost pile at the city yard waste drop off site, or occasionally from the person who does tree work for me.

I do not like red mulch at all. --136.34.xxx.xxx

I think this is a personal preference. But, I am with Carolyn. The purpose of mulch is to control weed and plant growth. I don't want it distracting from the natural beauty of the flowers. Red mulch clashes with my dark pink/rose colored Crepe Myrtles and Azaleas. It does have a striking effect with Magnolias and white Camilas. JMO. --173.31.xxx.xxx

It’s a matter of personal taste, I don’t like the red mulch, (now that you say that I do see it a lot a gas stations), I use black mulch for my personal home. If this is for a rental I would use whatever color is most popular and will appeal to a wider range of people, not what you prefer. If you’re not sure of what type that is, ask the place where you order your mulch which 1 he sells the most of. --70.20.xx.xx

33 bags red, 33 bags of black and 33 bags of brown. Combine and I think it looks great. It looks more natural than just one color. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I've never thought of combining it.

Maybe it's regional--I see a lot of red mulch used here in Florida -- especially with palm trees and tropical plants. And at houses, not just at gas stations. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Going on the regional idea, if the red is lighter in color, maybe it is used in more southern regions with higher temps or is the organic matter used to make the different mulches more prevalent where a particular color is used. --107.77.xxx.xx

I just bought ten bags of brown at Lowes on sale 5 for ten. Hate the red and black plus both fade. If your municipality has a yard trim facility try their mulch, as Carolyn suggested. --24.194.xxx.xxx

Problem with “natural wood chips” direct from a chipper is it hasn’t been treated for weed seed or bugs. Commercial sold mulch is treated to kill weed seed and bugs, so if you are going to go that route make sure it has been treated. --70.20.xx.xx

Brown only. It's supposed to be natural looking. Cedar mulch is more reddish but dyed mulch just doesn't look good to me. I belong to a garden club that I was formerly President of, and have been gardening since I was four or five. --71.104.xx.xxx

J,

In Indiana I really like black. It looks clean and solid, making the home look sharp. Makes the home stand out and the bushes look greener. Red is a definite no for a home here.

Natural brown is blah.

Eucalyptus mulch looks great and bugs hate it. Packs nicely over time. I like a little color in the mulch because it lets me space the plantings farther apart and still have color in the bed. Nice smell too. Eventually lightens up.

I wouldn't want black. I would think that black absorbs heat. Don't want to cook the plants on a hot day. --108.69.xxx.xxx
