I think this is a personal preference. But, I am with Carolyn. The purpose of mulch is to control weed and plant growth. I don't want it distracting from the natural beauty of the flowers. Red mulch clashes with my dark pink/rose colored Crepe Myrtles and Azaleas. It does have a striking effect with Magnolias and white Camilas. JMO. --173.31.xxx.xxx

It’s a matter of personal taste, I don’t like the red mulch, (now that you say that I do see it a lot a gas stations), I use black mulch for my personal home. If this is for a rental I would use whatever color is most popular and will appeal to a wider range of people, not what you prefer. Problem with “natural wood chips” direct from a chipper is it hasn’t been treated for weed seed or bugs. Commercial sold mulch is treated to kill weed seed and bugs, so if you are going to go that route make sure it has been treated. --70.20.xx.xx
