I have a toilet that is double flushing and wasting a lot of water. It had an old flapper on it that was leeaking water through, but it was not double flushing.. I put the same kind of flapper on and now it double flushes..

I did try one flapper with plastic handles but it sticks open and does not go down.

Toilet is an American Standard.

How can i get rid of double flushing? I can only think of new flapper or allowing way less water into the tank.. --72.202.xxx.xxx

Forget fixing fluxh valves and buy a new toilet. You will save money and headache in the long run. --69.160.xxx.xxx

I am a licensed plumber. There are so many different types of toilets. There are also many types of flapper/stoppers.

You will have to play with:

a) the type of flapper/stopper

b) the level of water in the tank.

Some stopper/flappers will have adjustments to change the amount of water used to create a cycle, flush. Or some stopper/flappers have plastic center inserts that will change the flushing cycle.

Then some stoppers/flappers have a foam ball on the pull chain that can be adjusted to stop the cycle of a flush when different amounts of water exit the drain (Tank into the bowl).

This is an exercise in FUN. You will play with a toilet with half a dozen stoppers and floats testing how to adjust a poorly flushing toilet into a toilet that will work with 1 flush each time... --47.155.xx.xxx

Maybe try an American Standard replacement part instead of the Korky from HD? --71.161.xxx.xxx

My plumber just installed a new American Standard and the handle fell off during installation. Other than the 15 minutes on hold, they were fantastic with the warranty. She took all my information and within 10-14 days I had full replacement guts mailed to me. We only needed the handle piece so now we have backup fluid master parts. They stood behind their product. --73.17.xx.xxx

I have a 3 family house that had older toilets. I changed the flappers and was still getting high water bills. Then one day replaced all 3 toilets with AS Cadet 3's and my water bill is almost half of what it was before. The $360 in new toilets paid off in 3 months. --66.30.xx.xx

I have lots of American Standard Cadet 3 toilets in my units. Depending upon the quality of your water, I find that unless you replace the flapper every few years they tend to allow a bit of water to escape from the tank into the bowl. It's so slow that my tenants never seem to notice it.

I have been using the Fluidmaster ($8.98 at my HD) adjustable 3" flapper with the silicone seal. The package says they're for Glacier Bay & other brands including the Cadet 3. When you install it make sure that you follow the directions on the package & adjust it for the American Standard toilets. It's also a good idea while the old flapper is out to give the sealing flange a good cleaning. --71.174.xxx.xx

I don't understand your description. When you say double flushing are you referring to twice the water or is the flapper going up again after it drops/seats after the first flush?

If it's simply running twice the water then the first thing would be to adjust the float to lower the amount of water in the tank to just enough to get a full flush. If the flapper slow in dropping then look to see if you have it snapped on properly so that it swings without binding. Finally, check to chain to make sure there isn't too much or too little slack to the handle and the handle that it doesn't bind when pushed. --64.130.xx.xxx
