Just got a text from tenant who's been gone nine months...she never had her mail forwarded with the P.O. and now wants to know if I got an urgent letter for her at my rental? I would help her but it is in a locked mailbox controlled by the P.O. and I don't have a key. It would mean going to the P.O. and presenting a house deed, I suppose, to get the key.
I know some of them do this because they are dodging bill collectors but even then I still don't get it? Every time I've moved in my life getting the mail forwarded has been one of my main priorities.

Before I posted on here I told her I'd look for the key...
She wants me to give her mail to the drugged out next door neighbors (the ones I've posted about who caused a lot of headaches for me). I don't like the situation. Some of her mail could get stolen and then I might be blamed.

I have her current address, I mailed the deposit to them there. It's in a different county about an hour drive from here. They don't owe me any money.

J,
You are very wise to be wary about handing a former Resident’s mail over to someone else. Our policy is once a Resident leaves, we collect mail and write “Return to sender – No Longer at this address” on each and every piece of mail.
Additionally, to hopefully encourage departing Residents to have their mail forwarded, we include a Forwarding Address kit from the post office and require proof that this paperwork was handled. If we do not receive proof that this paperwork was handled, we include in our lease a $45.00 fee to help compensate us for the all the extra work.

The whole thing irritates me and I don't like being put on the spot like this. I'm sure it seems like no big deal to her but I bet it's illegal to open a mailbox with the key, take her mail out of the box and give it to someone else, just as opening someone else's mail is illegal. Good question. This is dumb but it's been vacant that whole time. The place hadn't hadn't been unoccupied (except for a turn that lasted a couple of months years ago) for many years and there were all kinds of problems that needed to be addressed, including hidden ones that popped up. Plus I was working on something else. Then finally I decided to sell for various reasons and the realtor wanted more things done to add curb appeal. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Postman has to use key to leave mail? Put a note out there for him/her right where they can see it, telling what you wrote here and see what happens. Include the forwarding address in the note for the mailman. Or if I knew the time when the carrier arrived I might go and wait and speak to him/her. If she did not leave you the mailbox key you should have charged the deposit cost of getting a new lock-key for a new resident, if none has appeared then you should have the key so you can leave a note for the mail carrier to stop the mail to the unit. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

I wanted to find out which mailbox this house has, to give that information to the home buyer. There are five sets of boxes each numbered 1-16. Tenant knew her number but wasn't sure which "set" it was in. In any case, none of the small keys in my bag worked.
