I live in a rural neighborhood and our mailboxes are clustered out on the main road. This is a second home and the mailbox is not a locking one. We received a piece of mail from another neighbor who wrote on the mail that someone is stealing mail along this route. Question: Can I put a small cam to either have motion activated movies or pictures captured when someone opens my mail box. I would place it inside the box at the rear with maybe a cardboard false panel? Any ideas? Thanks. --76.105.x.xxx |

I added a locking front panel to all of my tenants mailboxes. Cost me about $80 each one. --99.23.xxx.x |

Short of catching the thief doing it, it's pretty hard to stop it.
Maybe get a PO Box at the local post office and collect your mail when you want.
Of course you could somehow catch them but what would the cops do? --75.7.xx.xx |

i believe mail theift or tampering is indeed a federal offence. the usps has their own police force and investigators who take this VERY SERIOUSLY. --172.250.xx.xxx |

With the permission from my local post office I would replace the current mailbox with a heavy gauge steel locking one -- they cost between $75 to $125 each... --47.155.xx.xxx |

Get together with the neighbors and see if everyone will chip in and install a metal gang box. Then everyone has a locking mailbox and the thief will go elsewhere.
I don't know what they cost. Every place I've lived with a gang box, the post office paid for it, so it didn't cost me anything. --76.178.xx.xx |

Everybody has to get a locking mailbox and get permission from the PO if necessary. I would put a game trail camera somewhere nearby and check it daily. I caught a neighbor to the two four plexes riffling through the mail boxes in the foyers one day. She was looking to see if her welfare check had been mis delivered. She was surprised to find out it was a federal crime to take someone's mail. People can put a "vacation hold" on their mail temporarily until this is resolved. --71.104.xx.xxx |

What method does anyone suggest for catching them? I think you need a license plate to determine if the stolen vehicle or bicycle can be captured with the correct operator, locking mailboxes are more effective. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

Putting the camera in the mailbox won't work. At best, you'll get a picture of a hand. Or more than likely, the camera will be adjusting from pitch black to bright light when they open the door. You might just get a video of the camera adjusting to the light. If you want to use cameras, you need to place two or three camera near the mailbox so you get a wider picture of the area from multiple angles in hopes of getting a photo of the person and vehicle license plate.
If you use a camera, it will have to be self-contained, like a game camera. Running power to it, or ethernet / power over ethernet (PoE) would be expensive. It might also be too far a run for ethernet to work. That would require fiber. Bigger expense.
Another approach would be to create a Fort Knox of a mailbox. Have a large package/mail door, then have a spring hinge bottom that lets the mail drop into a secure box and the bottom closes. Makes it hard to put your hand in and pull something out. You'd get your mail from a steel reinforced door in the bottom back of the mailbox that is beyond arm's reach.
You'll never identify them from the camera unless they're a neighbor you know or get a copy of their license plate. --108.69.xxx.xxx |
