OK so yesterday spent the day looking for more fire power. I had a semi auto .380 six clip. More of a noise maker than a body stopper.

Brought the Glock 17 for the senior manager and CZ75BD for myself. Plenty of ammo for practice.

Never in my wildest thoughts did I see this coming. I was always thinking my bet was the city would move out and expand-- and it has. Wasn't planning on all the bad boys and girls also moving.

No matter who they are-- when there's trouble-- it's from non compliance. The none compliance, in my book anyway, is more due to drugs and being in lala land. I mean I've been tazed 5 different times and each one stopped me in my tracks-- I saw explosions of light. These people- get it 2 or 3 times (same time) and they don't even slow down. How can that be?

You ever do drugs? When someone's high they can feel like superman. Amped up on meth or crack and it will take a lot more to stop them than the average person. Then again, the likelihood of being attacked by a sober Joe is a lot less likely. --70.44.xxx.xx

As a jeweler crooks tried to hold me up, run me off the road and break into my stores/home.

As a real estate investor, I had gangs try to shoot me, rob me and damage my properties.

No matter what someone says, to shoot someone and maybe end their life will haunt you for the rest of your life. You will be sued and someone will try to retaliate against you or someone you love.

The best solution to these types of problems is NOT TO PUT YOUR SELF IN DANGER! Change your hours, don't go at night to meet someone over a rental. Don't accept cash. Ask for a cashier's check or money order. Have a friend or buddy go with you. Don't expect your spouse or child to do a real estate task in a marginal neighborhood.

Years ago I learned from a gunsmith about different loads, rounds and ammunition. Like how many bullets it will take to "stop" someone. Discussed was:

A) a 22 vs a 25

B) a 32 vs a .380

C) a .380 vs a 9 mm

D) a 9 mm vs a 38

E) a 9 mm vs a 45

and so on, you get the picture. From what I remember a 9 mm will do the trick in two shots on average while a .380 can take 3 or more. NOT SURE. But a .380 gun can be very small and easily hidden, while a 9 mm is larger and harder to hide from plain sight. --47.155.xx.xxx

I'm replacing the 380 in my work truck with one of the 9's. Not sure which one yet.

We have a Winchester "HOME DEFENDER" we've had for years and a S&W 357 on my shelf closet.

As a back up have a bushel basket full of rocks!!!! and sling. Worked for David.

On a side note: I lost a .380 recently that was in my brief bag in the floor board of my pick up. Here's how. Although I layed my black brief bag flat on the floor in back before going into h-depot. What I think happened is I have a key fob that when you get close to the truck or touch the handle the locks open. I was halfway in the store and went back to the truck but didn't open the door-- but must have activated the unlock without realizing. That afternoon notice brief was gone. --99.103.xxx.xxx

J.... I bought my first (and only) 9 mm this year. Standard Glock-19 (shorter barrel). It was about $500. Dealer threw in a free cleaning kit. Bought enough ammo to go to the range 3 times and squeeze a good number of rounds thru it to break it in and also to keep a dozen boxes on hand. Total ammo cost a little more than $200.

I am not an avid shooting fan. I only bought this for home-defense and the occasional going to the range with my wife or a friend. I was trained to shoot a rifle in the military, and some of that training carries over (breathing, trigger squeeze, etc), but overall it's a very different game. All that to say is until this year I didn't know much more about shooting a pistol than you do.

Note: Ammo is really hard to get right now. 9 mm is hard to find and is up about 50% from when I first bought back in April. 380 (my wife's pistol) is almost impossible to find at any price. Haven't seen any on the shelf in 4 months.

Bottom line: you can get everything you need for about $700-$800. Add in $100 more to take a basic safety class at a range. "Learning to shoot" takes a lot more practice, but generally speaking if you can handle a firearm safely, you will never use it unless the person is less than 20 feet away, at which time you don't have to be an expert marksman. Just be careful about not hurting yourself and/or allowing someone else to get the fire arm from you. There's a reason why you have a clip with 15 rounds....you can miss several times and still have enough to neutralize the threat. At that close range and with adrenaline pumping through your veins, expert marksmanship classes won't make much difference. Just point and keep squeezing until the attacker retreats or drops.

ah Sid......what “clips” do you have that hold 15 rounds (?) or perhaps referring to a magazine ? two different things as any gun owner or ex military knows....a short barrel shotgun would work best for self defense. I do also have glock43x with hollow points..in the magazine...still. always best to go out the back door first if possible. your reference to “marksmenship” for self defense is irrelevant Sid. That applies really to target shooting in the military. your “advice” is what give responsible gun owners bad press. --107.77.xxx.xxx
