OT Police Quit (by Oregon Woodsmoke [ID]) Posted on: Sep 6, 2020 2:58 PM
Message:

One of my tenants is a local policeman. We were talking yesterday.

Police have a pretty good grapevine and they know what is going on in their profession. He tells me that the officers in Seattle and Portland are quitting in droves. Many more who haven't quit have applications out trying to get hired elsewhere. Lots of them are trying to get hired in Idaho. Some have been taking vacation days to come to North Idaho, hoping it would increase their chances if they apply in person.

So, it looks like Seattle isn't going to have to defund the police. There are not going to be many police left.

Listen, I am not a fan of cops. I think the profession as a whole attracts bullies and uniform junkies. But I do know there are good cops - my son was one for a brief time.

But I heard someone say recently, and I agree: If there are 100 good cops, and 12 bad cops...and the 100 good cops STAY SILENT about the 12 bad cops...now you have 112 bad cops.

It's the police unions that have done this to them.

Here is Los Angeles the Policemen, Firemen and other City/County employee's aren't happy with their pay. Like in the case of the Police, for retirement, they take the top salary earned over the past 3 years and get 80% of that for their retirement. After 20 years of service they qualify and are guaranteed that package. BUT what YOU DON'T KNOW is, they are allowed to work "OVERTIME" to vet their retirement base. At time and a half.

So the average Police man doesn't make the supposed salary of $60,000, $75,000 or even $80,000. We are taking around $125,000 to $150,000 on average. They also get full medical for their entire family, spouse and dependent children 25 or younger.

You wonder why the retirement pension plan in California is going bankrupted? It's no wonder...

The ranks will fill in with better cops over time. The ones that don't want to change will find jobs in departments that will allow them to continue poor policing but you can bet insurance companies will demand work on those departments as well. Not off topic at all.

Before being a landlord, only interactions I’d had with police were strictly due to my lead feet. Now, I have personal experience with break-ins, a mugging, streets blocked off because of shootings, shots fired in the area, even into my houses. I’ve had calls from my son, worried about the riots that were saying heading to my city. I am currently reconsidering my future rental plans because of the violence/ riots that has taken over some major cities. Makes me sad, because I enjoy having the rentals, enjoy renting to my tenants, was looking forward to teaching the grandkids how to manage rentals. But, not if there are fewer and fewer police. Not bringing my grandkids into a war zone. A couple of cities are currently that. One of my tenants commented that road rage is way up, she is getting concerned for her sixteen year old son because of the road rage. I have taken quick right turns down a street lately because two other drivers were ‘having an issue’; I got the heck outta the way. Lawlessness and ‘taking things into our own hands’ is on the rise. Not a good thing.

Unfortunately, viewing a cellphone video and making instantaneous judgements of a situation has become the norm. Mob mentality. --70.92.xxx.xxx

They don't like the lawlessness that ensued. My only fear is that as they flee they will still hold on to those same failed policies wherever they land.

And for those of you who generally believe the police are brutal and shoot unarmed people needlessly, I would challenge you to put yourself in their shoes like this activist did a few years ago:

I have had more bad interactions with police than good mostly rude and seem like they don’t want the hassle of having to arrest or fill out reports....total laziness. The police I do personally know don’t strike me as people that got into the profession for the right reasons.....to protect and serve. Most just thought it would be an “Easy” decent paying job and none of the cops I know were very good students or very “good humans.” This is just my personal experience and I am sure there are plentY of great and well intentioned cops.

My opinion is we need more funding for mental health, drug addiction and other social causes that would help reduce crime. Police simply react to crime....very little preventative policing. I’ll go a step further, arrests for drug related crimes has put way too many African American fathers in prison for long periods of time and we wonder why we have problems in the inner city. How many bad police interactions are related to “drug crime policing?” How effective has the “war on drugs been?” How much police resource goes into that issue? Wouldn’t that time, money and effort be better placed in social programs that help PREVENT crime?! Not saying defund the police....exact opposite....I am saying keep same level of police staff and just retrain and re focus attention!!! --24.164.xx.xxx

JAC/JC (OH), you are ALWAYS so wrong. You will not be replacing bad cops with better cops. You'll be losing the best cops and replacing them with those who meet new, lower standardized testing in a desperate attempt to fill many of the positions being vacated by the best and brightest among them.

But I already told you this was going to happen in a recent post. Some folks are just to fool hardy to understand the consequences of your actions. It's a crying shame that all those who want the cops to disappear can't get their wish, while those of us who praise them for their courage and commitment have enough to protect and serve our communities. --73.25.xx.xxx

Jim: While I agree with some of what you are suggesting, I think it is a stretch to suggest that "no one will do or say to you that you don't already invite." That simply isn't true and we see the opposite ALL the time.

Some police really enjoy that position of power. They are rude or aggressive or controlling to some people simply because they can be -- not because anyone "invited" that behavior.

To put it on our terms, I think we see tenants on a regular basis who are rude or even aggressive towards landlords who did not "invite" anything. They've already made up their minds that we are a bunch of greedy jerks who are only trying to take advantage of them. So, they act negatively toward all landlords simply because they may have had a bad experience with one in the past or they feel that all of us are bad, in general. We didn't "invite" that at all.

Some people ARE negative towards groups who certainly did not always "invite" it. So, sorry, but I completely disagree with that idea. It applies to cops, tenants, and lots of other people who treat some groups differently because of preconceived notions that were not "invited" by the person they are against at that time.

(And, yes, I've certainly see situations where people DID invite poor behavior. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying that the idea that "no one will do or say to you that you don't already invite" is simply not reality.)

Personality testing used to be part of the hiring process for police but it screened out too many people of one group and so it was ended. It was replaced by knowledge and skills tests that simulated police situations in a paper and pencil test. I saw it and it seems to be legitimate.

The media is causing a lot of this upheaval. Take Rochester for example. The person who died had mental issues and was running naked through neighborhoods for quite some time. When they caught him, he announced that he had corona, so they put a hood over his face for safety. He died at a hospital 7 DAYS LATER, OF SUFFOCATION. That would probably be from the covid he had. The media just says he died from suffocation 7 days later. I know there are patient privace laws but not Rochester people are all riled up for a media error or poor reporting. --71.104.xx.xxx

Love body cams and all sorts of private footage. Hard to be in a position of 'authority' in any job. More is expected of you and for the police, danger all around. I took a 3 month Citizen's Police Class a few years back and found it's scary to be out there. We had to do simulated traffic stops (all police perps in car). The guy in the back seat jumped out and pointed 'something' at me. Luckily I saw the screen of his cell phone flash in the light and didn't shoot (yeah we had fake guns). Of the 29 people who did the 'traffic stop' I was the ONLY one who didn't shoot the poor guy. He was playing the part of a happy drunk. We did this one by one, so we didn't get to see what the others did. Still, my first instinct was that he had a gun and was going to shoot. I never want to be in law enforcement. Stressful, scary, too many things can go terribly wrong in both directions. Glad I took the class though. I know both sides of the picture now. --72.199.xx.xxx

Sorta Blonde, that would be an excellent thing for all drivers to experience. Back in my high school drivers ed class ( horse and buggy days, no cell phones. lol!) we were all taught how to respond when stopped by police. Turn radio off, everyone keeps hands where they can be seen, driver’s license out, ready to hand when officer gets to window. Say very little, only driver should answer. The teacher even pointed me out as needing this information, cuz, well, my family’s reputation. Heehee... zoom, zoom.

I am all for bringing drivers ed back into the high school curriculum, make it mandatory, and paid for out of taxpayer funds, not the families paying. Yeah, that is a big budget item, but one I think would be a worthwhile investment. With modern technology, we could gives kids a much better start on driver safety. I would bet that most police/ civilian interactions involve driving. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Busy, it's one thing to say “pray for cold heavy rain so people stay home”.

It's another thing to read a newspaper headline, that says: "Landlords wish to send the hurricane (category 4 -

death and destruction) to various cities around the country like Portland, Seattle, and Kenosha (heavily populated by the very tenants they wish to serve."

And yes that may seem a bit much and you would think can not happen. I don't know to what extent some groups may routinely have more interactions than others, but I would guess that I have personally had more interactions with police than the average person who visits this site and it's not because I am taller than most of you:).

Thank God I've learned good communication skills since high school and was also taught early on NOT to reach for stuff (or doing other things) when interacting with the police. Otherwise it may have turned out that you would be looking at a blank screen right now:)

After becoming a landlord I have made it a point to develop good working relationships with police officers and that has served me well in the rental business. In fact, I so much appreciate what they do. I definitely do not want less of the good ones present and available.

However, even today, if I am honest, there is still a slight fear that arises whenever there is a police car behind me, not knowing if this may be one of the few not-so-good (especially if driving on lonely roads in certain parts of the country). Though the fear is not nearly as much as when I was younger. I figure at this point in my life, the chances of a policeman seeing me and thinking this old guy is a possible threat or troublemaker is a lot less and thus less tension is created or less need to prove something. --70.161.xxx.xxx

Lest anyone twist my words, I AM NOT saying that driver’s who were pulled over were responsible for some of the horrific outcomes. I AM saying that driver’s ed, taught to ALL teenagers, can improve road safety, improve driver and police interactions. Not a cure, just a small step towards better.

We’ve had a lot of years to change things, yet we seem stuck, not much in the way of solutions being offered. Better/ more police training is needed for sure. More driver training can help too. Pretty common in my area for teens to just wait until they are 18, then just study a drivers ed book enough to hope they can pass the test. No behind the wheel training. The most valuable part of which is driving in a group of one’s peers, with the instructor next to you in the front seat. Just the nerves of having your peers see you drive, hear the instructor’s critiques is valuable training for interacting in a stressful situation. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Busy this is not about driver education. In good consciousness I can not stay silent and let this issue be minimized or dismissed as a lack of driver education. In all due respect, this is a serious national issue and needs to be addressed in real terms, not minimized as being about something else.

Sometimes folks just need to listen, learn & ask questions. Especially about things they have never experiences or have a frame of reference. --108.56.xxx.xx

White people get shot regularly "reaching for things". These comments from some of you prove the point that police shootings of white people, which are more frequent due to the larger population size, are not reported. I have been stopped a few times, short blonde female, and I always felt a sense of fear reaching to the glove compartment. One never knows the mental state of the police officer nearby. Is his gun out? Will his finger slip on the trigger? Is he over tired or angry with someone or has PTSD?

I was threatened by a tenant and called the police. Meanwhile he ran away and the police were going to take me in for false report. Fortunately the despatcher heard him yelling at me and threatening me. How would I have fared in the back of a police car or a holding cell? My elderly mother would have been alone with no idea where I was. --71.104.xx.xxx

I have met and enjoyed Laura's company at past conventions. I have a great admiration for Jeffrey, Dot, and their sons, having met and greatly enjoyed all of them. And I know I have learned and grown greatly because of Jeffrey and actually consider him a "friend."

With that said, it is no accident that police officers experience greater apprehension when approaching some folks of color, especially if they (the person of interest) are younger or very aggressive or agitated. It is not something I want to acknowledge, but I feel I must since this subject has been brought forward.

One of my best friends is a police officer. He has a young adult son who is of mixed race (he is white, his ex was black). Unfortunately, some, especially younger black folks tend to commit an inordinately high proportion of violent crimes. He admits that whether he wants to or not, he is much more nervous when encountering some people of color due to the encounters he and most of his fellow officers have experienced on the job.

I also do remember that when I was younger (and white) that I was much quicker to be confronted by police than as I have become older. That is also no accident. Younger folks also commit more crimes/are more erratic.

How can police officers (even those of color) who experience this in real life, take that human element out of every interaction and every moment? I believe for most, even with all their training, will find it to be nearly impossible.

JB...it is true. That is part of the reason blacks are much more likely to be shot when interacting with cops. Cops are more afraid of blacks, so much quicker to use deadly force, whether appropriate or not. There is a bias. I don't know the solution, but I am sure it is not pretending that the cause is something else. I also think communication honestly (as you have done) about the problem can only bring good (along with some growth discomfort). Thanks for sharing. --108.56.xxx.xx

That's absolutely right Sid. It's so easy to condemn police and say, "But he was unarmed, so there is absolutely no reason to shoot." Well, that is clearly ridiculous under many, many scenarios which could prove life or death to an officer in a split second.

Until you have done their job and/or experienced for yourself the extremely perilous circumstances they are put in, sometimes on a daily basis, you have absolutely NO clue about the danger they face and the actions they feel they are forced to engage in.

I remember seeing a TV show/report many years ago where a single, female officer pulled over a man and his young son for a routine traffic stop. The officer was struck by the man so hard and so fast that she required major reconstructive surgery to repair the damage to her face.

Why did he do it? He was a parolee and decided that, no matter what, he wasn't going back to jail that day. So, just like that, that female officer's life was changed in a split second by an unarmed man from a simple traffic stop. --73.25.xx.xxx

Thanks for that video link Sid. Staged scenarios or not, it's scary out there when you have seconds to respond. I always told my students that no matter what you think of authority figures (of all kinds) or your opinions about your personal 'rights', you would do better to comply with authority than to automatically resist. Authorities, even high school teachers like me, find themselves in scary confrontations and there is no good way to make it all go away. Case in point, new student, first day, walked over to a kid at the computer, from behind, started punching him in the back of the head (for no apparent reason). I jumped up from my desk, ran over grabbed the puncher to stop him and HE PUNCHED ME! Right in the face, seeing stars. Oh yes. Yeah, I'm female, was alone in the classroom, and found myself in real danger. I saved the 'victim' though and 911 got him to the hospital with a concussion. Luckily 2 male teachers happened to walk in just as I was reeling from punch one and grabbed the aggressive kid as he was going for punch 2. I will never get in between two fighting people again. Thank goodness he didn't get in that second hit. What to do? Save someone, save yourself? Never a good answer. --72.199.xx.xxx

Jeffrey, thank you for sharing your personal story. Those of you who read it and went on to post irrelevant videos about the subject at hand should have spent more time reading it. THIS is the real life of a black man in this country.

My son was briefly a cop. He underwent 9 months of paramilitary style training, with another 3 months training with a training partner in the field.

#1. Why paramilitary style training? What happened to PROTECT and SERVE? #2 Why were most of the men in his class ex-military? Trained to kill first, ask questions later? #3 Why do our cops have flamethrowers and tanks these days?

Why are they taught that the first thing you do is pull your gun?

My son pulled his gun the first night on the job (as instructed by his trainer) as they were investigating a burglary. The first night! It used to be said most cops nationwide don't pull their guns their entire careers.

He quit after just a short time. He said it was likely he would either kill someone or worse, get someone killed with a mistake. He would have been one of the good ones.

The reason why white people are starting to protest along with our black friends and relatives is because we BELIEVE them now. We have VIDEO now. We used to hear the stories about Driving While Black, Walking While Black, Being 12 and Playing in the Park While Black but sad to say the stories were so horrendous we somehow just couldn't make ourselves BELIEVE it. Because it never happened to us.

Then we see it happen "in real time" on TV!!! We *have* to stand up and say, "NO MORE. Not if we want to call ourselves a civilized people. NO MORE." We white people make up most of the population, blacks no more than 13%. We HAVE to stand up and provide strength in numbers or nothing will ever change. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Then WMH posted, her last comment and I realize that the ANTIFA/pro-anarchy/protest everything/burn down and loot if you don't see immediate results crowd that we will never, ever come together on any understanding of each other. She has her mind made up and it if things don't go the way she sees they should then those people are wrong. Period!

Well, police have a very good reason for their responses. They are here for our protection, but also for law and order. When someone hates police above everything else, they will never see things except from the most extreme angle. If someone with a career long criminal record winds up losing his life in a confrontation with police, why does it always come down to that person's color? If he is black, the cop was automatically a racist. If he was white, obviously no harm, no foul. Why must everything come down to color?

I can now better understand the "One Reason I don't want to go to Cancun..." post. It seems to me that it really isn't about Covid at all. That massive feeling of divide goes much deeper than just that.

I remember him talking about how he arranged his house, nothing was on top of the refrigerator because he could not see the top, he always wore suits when meeting folks because it gave him more authority, he dated asian women because they tended to be short. He just went on and on and on about all these height issues in his life and how it governed about how he lived his life. I was dumfounded. I thought about height. There were none, zero zilch height issues in my life. I never thought about height one way or the other. That is because I am smack in the middle of the height range, not too tall not too short. The world is made for people of my height. i never think about height or have any issues around it. This country is geared toward white folks, they never think or deal with race issues. So for some it is hard to image that race is an issue. It is, and as we are becoming more and more diverse it will be a growing issue for more, no longer will head in the sand work. --108.56.xxx.xx

Maybe you recall the Hollywood bank robbery and subsequent shootout with law enforcement!!! Those 2 men has fully automatic weapons and full body armor. They terrorized West Hollywood for almost an hour, wounding 12 officers and 8 civilians. You asked what happened to protect and serve, it’s really hard to protect and serve when you’re out gunned!! Situations like that, as well as an increase in mass shootings are what brought about getting the men and women that PROTECT US the weapons they need TO PROTECT US and go home at the end of their shift. You say your son was a cop briefly, how thrilled would you have been if while your son was a police officer he had to respond to a shots fired call with nothing but a whistle and taser? Seriously, wake up, this isn’t Mayberry, if you have an issue it should be with society in general, not law enforcement. --50.227.xxx.xx

The folks out here complaining about police brutality are not imagining it. Not all segments of society are experiencing police the same. Again at no point did I comment on whether these complaints are valid or not, I didn’t address them at all. My post was strictly regarding the need for law enforcement to have the proper training and weapons to do their job, which is to protect and serve the public. It’s extremely hard to protect when you’re outgunned, so I’ll say it again, If you, WMH, or anyone else has a problem with law enforcement needing military style training and weapons BLAME SOCIETY! Those specific questions have absolutely nothing to do with race.
