I have a few large old houses that I'm trying to find a source for oversized foundation vent covers / crawl space grilles, without spending three figures, or accidentally buying something meant for interior use only.

The last time I tried having my handyguy construct some out of screening... he just kind of propped window screens up against the holes, and they mysteriously disappeared shortly afterwards. I'm trying to avoid that route. :P

The one I'm doing first has two holes with a 16x20 opening each, but I'm having a terrible time finding things of that size.

What sites should I be visiting, or what keywords am I missing?

Thanks for your help!

If you are in a dry climate just close them in with siding. The local building inspector here wants to see them covered when doing a remodel or requires extra insulation on the plumbing lines if they are left open.

Prior to that I would build a box out of 1x4 (wide side against the opening) and then a metal grate squeezed between 1x2's on the inside. I've never seen a commercially made foundation vent. --64.130.xx.xxx

Try looking for concrete block foundation vent covers. You might find it more cost effective to use 2 or 3 standard size ones mulled together to fit your openings. --71.174.xxx.xx

Over the last few years many sizes have been discontinued. You'll have to make a special order or go to a Wholesale Building Supplier to look the up in their catalogs.

I've had to make my own screens out of galvanized sheets and 1/4" mesh. With my Harbor Freight $125 spot welder and my bender I make the frame, insert the screening and the spot weld the corners and along all sides...

Of I can make them using a wood frame and a staple gun. --47.155.xx.xxx

why can't you staple 1/4" hardware cloth to a frame?

Maybe if you want a vented water resistant grille you can use/ modify a gable vent for the attic.

You might even find a picture frame at the thrift shop that could work as a frame. --24.194.xxx.xxx

in home depot go to the filter area. Buy the 1 to 2 inch pleated with frame. Next gotothe spray paint isle and buy flat black spray paint-- use paint as intended and put your new vents inplace. 16x24 is 9.58. Pleated type. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Deanna,

Here is what I do. Using scrap 2x4's and Liquid Nails, I glue 2x4's to the inside concrete block crawlspace opening (16x20 in your case). I use Liquid Nails since Tapcon concrete screws are more hassle, however, I have used Tapcon screws before. Liquid Nails needs 12-24 hours to dry down good. Once dry, I then cut 3/4 inch plywood and screw that into the 2x4's that I glued the day before. Now, if I want a crawlspace vent here, I can cut an opening in the 3/4 inch plywood for a 8x16 foundation vent which are sold at Lowes or HD. A circular saw or reciprocating saw works good for this. --68.63.xxx.xxx

I would make my own but if I used wood then I would use ceder or walnut or some other rot resistant material and pet screen.

The other option that you could do is have them custom made, even at a local fabrication shop or wood shop. --73.120.xx.xxx

I have to ask because of the title given to "handyman".

Is your handyman usually good at fixing things for you?

Why can't he make some custom vents for you?

If he can do other carpentry repairs then surely he could make vents. --73.120.xx.xxx

Follow what Royal is building, I think if you used 2x4 to frame the whole opening you could just plunge cut the plywood and use both window screen and 1/4 or 1/2 hardware screen to keep the aggressive animals out, put the screen inside and you could have a removable plywood or furnace tin cut to cover that opening when pipe freezing is problematic. --76.188.xxx.xxx
