There was a recent all-out assault on property owner rights by a group of Legislators in our neighboring State of Massachusetts led by Representative Mike Connolly, (pictured right) who is proud to call himself a Socialist Democrat.

CTPOA and John Souza of CCOPO helped our counterparts across the border oppose this attack.Thankfully, the landlords in Massachusetts responded and rent control and a 12-month extension of their eviction moratorium were defeated on July 27 despite Connolly's Bills having 80 initial co-sponsors. The final vote had 31 anti-landlord legislators in support; that's 31 legislators that need to be retired from politics!

Here in Connecticut, we are preparing for the reality that rent-control and “Housing is a Right for All,” sealing eviction and criminal records and giving felons full civil rights protections will be proposed at the next Legislative session starting in January by Connecticut's Socialist Democrats.

The MA landlord groups with 3,000 members made calls and sent emails earning a big victory. In Connecticut we have a problem, we have the expertise and a great track record at our Capitol but we don't have nearly that many members to take on these challenges, we'll need a large volume of calls and emails to legislators with local landlord visibility and activity as well.

In preparation, all the CT landlord groups are now working together. The CCOPO and their lobbying team will focus on policy and creating strategic alliances at the Capitol. The CTPOA will facilitate member recruitment and develop new landlord groups and help strengthen existing ones while CTREIA has invited us to their meetings to interact with their participants.

The key is having informed landlords communicating with their local legislators across the State. The reality is most legislators don’t know much about rental housing, but they do get an earful from lobbyists and lawyers representing groups attacking private ownership of rental housing.

We must have local groups preforming grass roots lobbying to educate local legislators on our issues. We will need new members to join and we have extensive databases for marketing; below are the areas we will target first.

Bristol New Britain

New Haven Bridgeport

Hartford Manchester / Tolland

Waterbury Naugatuck Valley

Meriden / Wallingford New London / Groton

Norwich Windham

Enfield Litchfield County

To get more landlords to become members, we are hiring independent contractors for sales. Perhaps you might want some extra income or know of a recent graduate that's interested in sales, marketing or real estate.

We are flexible how we structure our working relationship and are technology orientated so working remotely is fine, a knowledge of ASANA and ZOHO CRM software is a plus. Please email us at info@ctpoa.com if you have any ideas or know of someone interested in working with us.

To help us get started, please use the link below to renew or obtain a new CTPOA membership, we need everyone involved... this is going to become a battle that landlords can't afford to lose!

It's a losing battle. Maybe you win now, but you'll lose eventually. Time to sell and move to friendlier states.

Or, at least it's time to jack your rates up to market rate plus and change your leases to month-to-month. --108.69.xxx.xxx

We are selling in the next few years with the way things are going. They just passed a bill that took away qualified immunity from the police meaning they can get sued personally if found to have engaged in wanton, reckless misconduct. Sad, very sad! --32.211.xxx.xxx

Even though most people think that the original bills were defeated they are still somewhat alive. The key anti LL parts have been slightly reworded & added as amendments to other bills in the hopes they could just tag along. The other thing they did was to extend the current legislative session to the end of the current calendar year. Normally their 2 year session would have ended at midnight on July 31,2020. --71.174.xxx.xx

llotf: " friendlier states " idea is fine for now, maybe.

But, unchecked, this cancer will be spreading - even, eventually to TX.

We all need to band together better! --70.160.xxx.xxx

TX already has a no wage garnishing rule, somewhere there is a way for small business people to gain/retain the public officials trust and allow tenants that go bad take responsibility for stealing from the housing providers. --76.188.xxx.xxx
