I was using a tool in the garage, plugged to a GFI, which I have done many times. The tool suddenly stopped working and I went to GFI and the buttons didn't work -- wouldn't reset.
I assumed it was a bad GFI and I would have to replace it. But I used the voltage tester and there is no power coming to the GFI anymore at all, so it was not the GFI itself.
There are no tripped breakers in the box and all the other GFIs in the house are working fine.
Any idea what this is? Is it something I can fix myself? Thanks.

Flip all your single pole breakers all the way off and all the way back on again. Sometimes they can trip in the panel box and won't look like they are tripped. Also, are you sure that there's not another GFI in the circuit somewhere before this one that may have tripped? --50.107.xxx.xxx |

Thanks NE, good idea.
I was just thinking that there could possibly be an exterior GFI on this house (can't remember if it has one). That could have tripped, might be the cause.

If have volt ohm meter then check to see if the ac voltage to GFI receptacle. Sometimes a circuit breaker can be a problem where have to open panel then with voltmeter check. If there is voltage going to GFI receptacle then the GFI is faulty. A lot depends on if have a voltmeter along with are aware how to avoid getting a shock as electrical can be a live circuit. Generally a circuit is 15 amps where if the amperage exceeds 15 amps the circuit breaker will trip where a GFI is a power tool is faulty where leakage to ground. Here it is not possible to buy anything electrical that is CSA or UL approved where a lot of cheap electrical devices from China are not sold. With power tools it may cost more upfront but inspect for CSA or UL label as the components along with wiring are better quality. --147.194.xxx.xx |

I was thinking exactly as NE wrote.
I skipped eating a bunch of days and bought this instead.

This is one of the only two tools that are allowed to ride inside the truck with me.

Google "series GFIC wiring" for general knowledge
Turn the breaker to the GFIC circuit off.
Remove the GFIC - Check for loose connections - broken parts
If none - Turn the power back on
IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE Working with live components
check the line side and load side voltage on the GFIC
Note - What is really handy is the testers that check for voltage on the outside of the conductor - mine is a circuit alert - about the size of a large pen.
That is the quick check - hopefully you want have a wiring issue between the GFIC. --184.20.xxx.xx |

NE was right. I flipped all the breakers and it started working again. --72.188.xxx.xxx |
