This is an update to my previous query bout replacing a gas WH. Thank you Robert, Gene and Steve for your tips and directions.

I was able to fix my 6 yr (of 6) ge gas heater after it stopped working when the gas valve was swapped out. I cleared the orifice (and vents) and sanded down the igniter, thremopile and pilot. It had a bad connection for the igniter so I cut down the plastic sheathing and was able to make sure the igniter connection was solid. Finally I saw spark and got it going. Thanks again for the help.

BTW, when I had the burner out flaky rust was on it and there was evidence of dried pooling liquid? on the burner. Is this just from condensation over time or is it the beginning of a leak from the WH?

Your rust is from condensation, perfectly normal. You did a great job, amazing... A new replacement BBQ type igniter costs around $5 on amazon or at home depot they want $12..

small potatoes [NY], glad you got your water heater working.

I just looked back at your original post & realized that I didn't answer your question about swapping out the plastic valves. Yes, I have successfully replace OEM valves with full port ball valves. It's easy on new tanks but on older tanks it can be a problem especially if you don't have an ongoing maintenance program of periodically draining the gunk from the bottom of the tank.

Whenever I drain WH tanks with possible questionable valves, I keep a cap at the ready to seal off any slow leaks.

All of my units have boilers & not furnaces. Starting about 10 years ago, I switched from using conventional WH & have been using indirect water heaters run off the boilers. Not only to the tenants get more HW, the systems last much longer and in my area they have decent rebates for doing this.

A metal hot water heater tank with a glass lined tank is a disposable item where once the anode is consumed then the glass lining wears through wear then the hot water tank rusts then leaks. The life expectancy of a hot water tank can be extended by replacing anode rod before the anode rod is consumed. View some videos on You Tube about anode rods. A new anode costs a lot less then replacing hot water tank. --147.194.xxx.xx

Robert,

when I look at the top of the tank the fitting for the rod makes me think it won't screw back in, esp. on an older tank. What tips do you have for making sure this goes well? --24.194.xxx.xxx
