How much should I pay for outlet, per switch, per light to electrician for finishing basement? --70.158.xxx.xx

Depends. How fast and accurately do you need it done?

A guy I once asked for a recommendation said: "Cheap, fast, and good...you can have 2 out of 3 at most."

My electrician has a standard rate of $65/hour, but he'll cut me a discount for a job that's 1/2 day or more since he doesn't have to drive all over the place and waste non-billable hours on the road. I live in a Mid-West, lower cost of living market. Median household income is around $52,000.

YMMV. --107.216.xxx.xxx

I last worked in the trade for others in 2000, every opening started at 85bux and those were jobs quoted in 98, so much work and not nearly enough time. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Rates depend on the size and scope of the job. When I was re-wiring an entire apartment building after a fire re-build, I charged an hourly rate, materials plus per item fee. Per box, outlet, switch, light, etc.

I wanted to install a light switch box in every closet while the owner wanted to skimp and only opted for a ceiling light with a pull chain. For large closets taking an entire wall space, I wanted to install a 3-way light switch at both ends of each closet.

Now some 20 years later, every pull chain cord or switch breaks and for the owner to call someone out to replace each light socket cost double what I wanted to charge to do the job right with switches.

So it's not just going the work but doing it right to save money in the long run.

Can't easily answer without knowing more...but if there is no drywall up I could wire an outlet in 15 minutes each. Add time for stringing the wire to the panel, 20% for overhead (shopping, quoting, cleanup, etc.) add material costs of about $5/outlet/switch plus a roll of copper wire (which is pretty pricey).

I'm not a licensed electrician but I'd probably charge about $40/outlet/switch if you had at least 10. Licensed electrician would probably charge more. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Mike,

My elec charges $60 per outlet or fixture plus materials to add or rework.

Like SID, modest Midwest prices.
