100 year old home had a small crack in the plaster wall. I dug out a little to make sure all the weak plaster was gone before starting the repair. Instead of wood, I hit metal. Dig around a little more and kept hitting metal. That doesn’t usually happen in plaster walls. I thought that for sure I finally found a hidden wall safe in one of these dumps. So I kept going. Turns out it is just a metal plate. No reason for it, it’s not a brace and it doesn’t appear to be doing anything. I’m left with no safe and a big hole to fix. Happy Landlording!!!

Sorry that you didn't strike gold! I know the feeling.

While doing a floor installation for a rental of mine, I found a small round floor safe in a tiny closet. It was old and the dialer was rusted in place. The back wall of the closet was up against the utility closet with the Hot Water Heater and Central Air/Heater unit. At some point the water from either of those appliances leaked (condensation pump or water heater) and flooded the safe.

I had my choice of tools. Plasma Cutter, Jack Hammer, Cut off wheels/grinder (carbide or friction), etc. Knowing where to safe lock was attached to the door, I drilled out the dialer device and opened up the safe, finding a rusty empty safe....I thought that maybe I'd find at least a silver dollar.... I only wasted an hour. Then I cemented in the safe....covering it with laminate... --47.155.xx.xxx

Whenever I install new drywall, sometimes I will put a fake treasure map between the studs for future generations. My treasure map makes a reference a recent bank robbery where the loot was buried in the back yard. --68.63.xxx.xxx

Builders used to put contemporary newspapers in the walls, like a time capsule for future renovators.

We drew "crime scene" body outlines on the sub-floor in our last house before covering with new flooring. Kids had a blast. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Found a nickel in the wall safe I took out . Not an interesting nickel, either. There is some ‘old wives tale’ about never giving an empty wallet as a gift, lest it always be empty.

Roy, how fun! Do you bury a small chest full of Monopoly money ever? --70.92.xxx.xxx

Busy,

Down here, Confederate money has more appeal than monopoly money. Worth is about the same. --68.63.xxx.xxx

If there are little kids living in a house we're remodeling, I let them write secret messages & make drawing on part of the framing before we cover it up. I'll also let them leave a message on the finish wall before we put the refers in. --71.174.xxx.xx

SON20,000 bought a hoarder house to flip. Neighbors claimed the old guy would bundle up cash, tie a string and lower it into the wall cavities.

He demo'd all the plaster walls. No cash.

My property in the country has an old 1899 plank house on it. I started gutting the drywall and that is when I discovered it was a plank house(after some research). Of coarse the drywall was modern material but behind that was several layers of vintage wall paper and behind that was news paper from the 1920's(before invention of wall paper) and behind that was old burlap feed sacks and then of coarse the oak planks. Lots of bugs too. Very interesting house. I have taken hundreds of pictures and kept some of the news paper clippings and wall paper clippings. Unfortunately I haven't found any real treasure. I have found an old glue bottle and old can. There are lots of old glass jugs and bottles in the woods. --73.120.xx.xxx
