AllyM keeps forgetting and using her real name. Second time in the past week.

As for the message, I believe it is actually accurate. This site is using an old-style certificate that is no longer considered secure by some browsers.

That being said, it isn't a huge deal here as long as you're not on pages for entering your credit card and such.

Hopefully they can get it updated.

Yes, I have the same issue with Firefox. I get the following error and can not continue, so I had to switch to chrome to access MRLL (Forum and homepage, same issue). ----------------- Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to www.mrlandlord.com.

Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Learn more… This website might not support the TLS 1.2 protocol, which is the minimum version supported by Firefox. Note that Chrome is also reporting it as "not secure."

I had replied in that other thread thinking it was related to the CloudFlare outage last week, but now believe that was incorrect.

The certificate is valid though. There is some other issue going on. My GUESS is that there is a "mixed content" issue where some frame or other data is loading from an non-secure source. It could be on purpose -- but it is also what happens when something bad tries to inject bad things (malware, ads, whatever).

Hopefully the webmaster can take a look. I'll click the report button so that he can check it out.

Here's the details from Chrome on why it is complaining:

Connection - obsolete connection settings

The connection to this site is encrypted and authenticated using TLS 1.0, RSA, and AES_256_CBC with HMAC-SHA1.

TLS 1.0 is obsolete. Enable TLS 1.2 or later.

RSA key exchange is obsolete. Enable an ECDHE-based cipher suite.

AES_256_CBC is obsolete. Enable an AES-GCM-based cipher suite.

The site is using weak encryption on an SSL certificate. The encryption method this site's SSL certificate uses is SO old or weak that it is considered exploitable and not safe because there are known exploits that can compromise this encryption type. If you opt to trust it, you won't receive the error again. Weak encryption isn't a big deal on this site since there's no security or credit card info being transferred and since the info is publicly available anyway. --108.69.xxx.xxx

The SSL certificate is what makes it possible to use h t t p s instead of h t t p and it encrypts the data between your browser and the website.

It's not a reason for concern. If this were my bank site then there'd be major concern. --108.69.xxx.xxx

As I posted the other day, I couldn't access this site using my regular browser Microsoft Edge so as a work around I started using Google Chrome just for Mr Landlord. This worked fine until this morning. Now if I use Google Chrome I get the same unsecure message & can see but not access the Q&A forum. However if I try Microsoft Edge & just go past the warning, I can access & post just fine. Since this computer is only used to "play" on the internet & not networked with our other computers, I don't think that I'm putting anything at risk. --71.174.xxx.xx

Jeffery what's going on? --99.103.xxx.xxx

Computer says connection (by Landlord ofthe Flies [TX]) Posted on: Jul 21, 2020 5:06 PM
Message:

I already answered this.

It's happening because Jeffery is using a weak SSL certificate. Just open the page WITH ANY BROWSER, ON ANY OS, click on the certificate in the web address window (in most cases it's a lock icon before the web address), and look at "more info" or something to that effect, or just keep clicking on things in that window until you get to the place where it asks you if you want to accept the certificate. It will try to talk you out of it, but just ignore the browser's pleas. It's a generic weak encryption warning but it doesn't apply in this case. Weak encryption only matters if you're putting sensitive info on the site like credit cards or SS#s. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Hi, I am one of the webmasters for MrLandlord.com. Jeffrey asked me to respond directly with details. From what I have gathered, sometime on Monday, at least one browser, Chrome, pushed a new release that, without warning, began causing a problem connecting to the MrLandlord.com website. The browser is disallowing the security protocol for the MrLandlord Secure Certificate.

As Jeffrey would say; "Good News!" A fix for this issue is in process with new server hardware and software being added and updated which we are now configuring and testing. In the meantime, I have made temporary adjustments so that all can reach the site, going through www.mrlandlord.com if necessary. Thank you for your patience and apologies for any inconvenience. Email webmaster@mrlandlord.com if you still run into an issue. --70.158.xxx.xxx

LotF: That's not quite accurate, actually. His certificate is fine. The problem is the server itself is using old TLS, which is no longer supported/allowed in most browsers.

So, it isn't a matter of getting a new certificate. It is bigger than that -- which is why they need to change the server software itself.

There's nothing wrong with the certificate itself. It isn't weak. It's a server issue.

Valerie: Like JB said, there does appear to be a problem after submitting a post. It goes, but the page does not refresh after. So, after clicking Submit, we're just left with the same box looking like it never went. That is why we're seeing so many repeated posts -- people keep clicking Submit because it doesn't look like it did anything. Something appears to be broken after Submit is clicked. Just FYI.
