Was a pretty rough night last night, in many cities, for our TENANTS. Can't say I was surprised-- but I don't think I would have been surprised even if all 4 officers" had been locked up with the result seen. With all the police video shows out there-- you can just see those who don't belong on the force and those who do. Seen that neck move many many times. I can also say I've seen, first hand, how the police can get out of control-- and I mean seriously out of control with renters.

So my question to all here is what can we do to bring about change? How do we do business-- what can we do better to change things? The future is getting less likely for RE mom and pop's out there.

95% of my tenants are African-American and have been for 20 of the last 35 years. Almost without exception they work hard and are no different then others. I have one who is ANTIFA that plants signs in her yard about race relation items. I have one who told me I just don't like black people-- one called me a cheap Jew. (I'm not Jewish). I let it all run off my back but acknowledge there are serious problems and would like to follow the lead of my other 95%

Jeffery this may get wild but maybe some could post their feelings? I am depressed by what I saw last night-- not surprised but saddened.

It is simply horrifying...my granddaughters and one of my DILs are persons of color and I am so thankful first that they are girls (although we all know of the cases where that didn't help!) And that they live in a real melting pot area with people of all colors and political persuasions (VA near DC.) And even there, they are afraid of the police (well so is everyone.)

Unfortunately I think the idea of being a cop tends to draw bullies into the profession. While some join to try to do good, too many - far too many - do it to have power over other people. The literal power of life or death.

In this case, why are the other three still free? Why are they not charged as well as the first? Why did they not stop him? I can understand the bystanders being AFRAID to intervene and isn't that horrible itself - imagine being there??

Until we stop imbuing the profession with immunity from wrongdoing, the abuse of power will continue. What we have found from watching a decade of body-cam videos is that even with the eyes of the world upon them, they feel they are protected - and let's face it, they ARE. --50.82.xxx.xxx

The best way to stop this is if everyone in the country shut off their TVs for a year and deleted their social media accounts and actually started TALKING TO ONE ANOTHER and let balance return to their minds.

Granted there is scattered chaos, but if you go out and look around, there is much more peace and understanding and general respect every day in life than you will EVER SEE on the television.

What's their motto? If it bleeds, it leads. --174.198.xx.xxx

Used to be a personality test given to police. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. It would pick out those who should not be cops. They stopped using it. Maybe someone got the "right" answers and handed them out. Maybe it selected one race not another. But it seemed to work. We didn't seem to have all this. Or maybe it was just kept quiet. The guy with the knee on the man's neck apparently had other charges of abuse and he was kept on the force. That has to stop. There needs to be a psychiatric interview of applicants for police jobs if there is not. And there has to be zero tolerance for police that commit abuse. One time I had a bad tenant, a male, and had to tell him I was not paying to repair something he had broken. He started yelling and waving his arms and I ran to my car and locked it. He stood there ranting and banging on my car so I called the police. Fortunately the despatcher stayed on the phone with me. Just before the police came, then tenant jumped in his car and raced away. When the police arrived and he was not there, they accused me of making a false report and were going to cuff me and bring me to the police station. Another car pulled up and told them that the despatcher had heard him through the phone and they were NOT taking me in. The tenant had a relative on the police force who probably heard the call and told his relative to flee leaving me holding the bag. Police departments need to watch out for this kind of cronyism and stop it and test the officers regularly to see if they have developed any murderous tendencies. If they have then they need mental health help. Maybe we need some better restraints so a police officer does not need to restrain a combative person. I want to see the body cam footage. That big muscle bound guy did not slip on a banana peel. Something happened when they tried to get him into the car. --173.61.xxx.xx

I have never had a good interaction with a cop in my life and I am an old white lady.

My hatred/fear of them started in my teens. We were attending a graduation party in a large sandpit area with bonfires. Cops came and broke it up. There was a LINE of cars exiting the area and we were sitting waiting for a break. Cops came up to us and said "Get going!" and my BF said, "Yes Sir Officer we are just waiting for a break in the traffic."

The cop proceeded to MACE everyone for absolutely NO REASON - except me for some reason. He said to me, 'Get in and drive!' I was crying and said, "I don't have a license, I don't know HOW to drive!" and he said "I don't care, DRIVE." So I did.

And we were middle-class white kids at a graduation party, no threat at all. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I have to agree with NE. I was just reading an article where scientific evidence was presented to Zuckerberg that the FB platform was proven to create and foster social divide. His response, I don't ever want you to bring that to me again.

Unfortunately, it isn't just in racial situations, but politics, business, city VS rural, and many other forms. As an old programmer I've told many users the phrase "garbage in garbage out", in this case if you constantly feed your mind with garbage then what do you expect to come out. The American brain is being coerced to favor hate over respect and for some individuals it doesn't take much feeding to go over the edge.

How do we change it? We have to get out and interact face to face with people that have different opinions than our own. Maybe try hosting a lunch on the greens at your apartment complex and invite the local Police department, Fire depatment and others to come and build some relationships with the residents. I've actually done that (through efforts of our Church) and it was a good experience. Once you talk and understand the different backgrounds people bring you tend to understand different perspectives.

I've had plenty of good experiences with cops. The only really bad one I had is when I got arrested for underage drinking and they threw me to the ground and stuck their guns in my face. I thought that was a little excessive for underage drinking. The other one who arrested me prior to that, I saw him about 15 years later and thanked him for it and told him it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. His eyes lit up and he said really? I said yes, I was Heading down a really bad road and that was a turning point in my life. He was glad to hear that.

Saying all cops are bad is about as bad as seeing all landlords are bad.

Fantastic observation and insight. My initial thought is-- for me anyway-- the past 20 or so years I've only had African - American tenants (95%).

I didn't grow up in the south and my high school on LI only had 2 African American students. So not being around hate thoughts and speech growing up kind of insulated me from that peer presure. When I went in the Navy I was to busy working and when I got out I was too busy with school and then working again. So I'm thinking the formative years that this hate develops is 9 thru 16?

When I went to work for a major airline in Atlanta in 78 I was shown the water cooler that had been labed "colored" but was no longer. I found that to be a culture shock that there was actually a place for people of color to drink.....

So here I am in GA and have been for 40 years saying gee's where the heck did this come from. I wasn't raised into it and gee's did I have blinders on?

I have a business to run and customers that need my attention (sometimes baby sitting) but does it really matter what color they are? Well! not to me. I'm just shocked at how blind I was to this until some of my tenants were roused by the police. Heck I've been arrested and rousted but figured it was because I was a Yankee.

I will do the following: give all my residents a great, not just good, place to rent. A place I would move into and live with my family. I will (and always have) given 1st class service to maint request--- yes even when they haven't paid the rent.

I will not be a doormate for those who don't pay OR who destroy my property. Don't care who they are/what they are. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Racial issues are wrong period but, I think it is in our nature as humans. As Elliot pointed out, there are racist people of all colors. I went to an all black school for a time when I was a kid and they were racist against me. I was born and raised here in the south and there is a lot of racism here still. I don't think it is something that will ever go away completely because it is human nature but over time things have changed some. I also agree with NE in that we need more face to face and zero Facebook. I am not personally on Facebook but every time that I have looked at it there is just mainly a bunch of garbage and hatred. I think MikeA is right as well in that gatherings with the local service sector and neighbors is a good thing. I have had mixed experiences in dealing with the police but over all they are fine just slow to respond to calls but they have guidelines to follow. Why do these rioters, of all colors, think that the solution is to destroy innocent peoples property? They are worse then the police. Why do they think that helps? I also would like to know what the man was originally being arrested for? No one is talking about that. Was the man legitimately being arrested and then resisted? He had at least two underlying conditions that caused his death (yes, the pressure to the neck/head likely was a contributing factor in his death, but it was not murder).

Do the police sometimes use a bit more force than necessary? Sure, it happens. The police are human.

This had nothing to do with his race...and what is disgusting is to see some people...and the media turn it into a race issue. That is the disgusting part.

And you say nothing about the domestic terrorism going on and the innocent victims and business owners who have now been destroyed by the actions of these horrible looters and arsonists. Don't make this out to be about racist police.

What the policemen did was wrong. I believe all 4 should be in jail.

What the victim did...remains to be seen. Maybe he was high and violent at some point. Maybe not. Either way, the police were wrong in their actions.

Saturday night seeing the protesters (not the vandals) made me think "ALL THESE PEOPLE CAN'T BE WRONG". I for one am going to try to change more.

The second thing that hit me. We know what the one cop did-- but why didn't the other 3 do or say something? Whats the only reason a reasonable person (out of 3 one should have been reasonable) would do nothing to stop it? FEAR! Then it hit me again-- that same FEAR is why not one witness to this did anything-- FEAR --- the same fear from both groups-- the 3 cops and bystanders-- fear of retaliation. No one had the gumption to stand up and say STOP that!

Retaliation and ridicule from fellow officers and fear of being locked up for interfearing with the police. Keep in mind had a citizen tried to stop the cop-- the cop would have even more reason to apply more force. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Most of the time those that run or gives problems to officers in big cities are those of color. Bottom line - DO NOT RESIST ARREST. Those that are innocent will not be charged after things are sorted out.

Another solution is for cops to use tasers. If the suspect resists, just tase their ars. Suspect goes down and the cops can easily handcuff them with no resistance in most cases.

I wonder what the odds would be if the police were to give into someone complaining and let them loose a minute and then find out that they were lying and then the police would loose having control of them. This is probably why that they are trained to never back down as Brad said. This was a really big man. Would you want to let him loose if you finally gained control over him and risk getting injured or killed yourself? Have you ever seen someone with a stolen item in there hand and tell you to your face that they don't have the item? Criminals do not tell the truth. If you watch the videos you will notice that the only ones that are real clear are the ones at the end but yet the whole event was being filmed by all kinds of bystanders. I think the officer made a mistake but it may have been out of fear of loosing control or training or both. It is really difficult to really know the truth because we can not know the mind and heart of the officer. Either way though, it looks like he is going to be judged as a murderer and his wife is divorcing him and his life will be changed forever. Now begs the question, why is his wife divorcing him? Is it because of fear of the rioters or media attention? Is it because he has been aggressive toward her? Is it because she is not a very supportive wife? It might be interesting if she testifies in court to find these answers. Are we mis judging the situation and wrongfully accusing the police? Perceptions can be wrong because of what we see or hear. It happens to all of us. I don't think we will ever know the truth. Again, I think it is something that we are born with. We inherently don't like different then us. Can you change that? History of human kind would dare say NO. --73.120.xx.xxx

nhsailmaker[NH], you are absolutely right. Those events are not grassroots stuff.. Imagine our class c-d tenants decided to walk out and protest like that.. Just like the caravans not too long ago. There are professionals behind those events.

I have seen videos where the protesters blocked the highway and targeted nicer cars, smashed many windows while drivers were hopelessly waiting in their cars.

It truly saddens me to see people acted worse than animals.

I get a feeling, it is about haves and have-nots. --98.110.xxx.xx

I have to say, next to one of my nice rentals, the Cute Cape Cod, lives a black man full of hate. He has taken every opportunity to damage by property. Twenty years ago the first thing he did was rip down the tenants grape vine. Tenant called me crying so I went over but I did not know where the property line was. I had just started working with the properties. Then he cut a limb off my tree over my deck. Tried to put a fence over the property line. Stole the survey markers. Put ALL his leaves on my side three feet high in the alley way. Kicked in screen on the screen house multiple times. Sprayed poison over his fence on my plants. Blew grass and leaves up the sidewalk to the house door. Put termite poison on the spot where the tenant fed squirrels and birds. Systematically destroying a red twig dogwood at the end of my drive. Last week I was over there as a garage window was broken, probably not by him. So I took some photos of the red twig dogwood as he has not attacked it yet this year. He saw me and ran across the street to the white neighbors and asked THEM why I was harrassing HIM!!!! The told him I was just taking photos of my house and I did not hear the rest of the conversation. From another neighbor I heard that some folks hate whites because they leave property to their children instead of sort of putting it out there for someone else. Yeah. This guy has so much hatred he wants to destroy my property. That is also what is motivating the riots. Any excuse to destroy someone's property because it doesn't belong to THEM! He's a retired landscaper from Princeton Univ. He was a client of my first husband's business and I was told that he was illiterate and arrogant and did not follow rules --173.61.xxx.xx

I am both saddened and sickened by recent events.

We will likely never know the real facts of the Floyd case. The media was quick to spin a narrative. Facts are trickling out that poke some holes in that narrative and are being hushed up. Now honest people who want facts don't know what to believe.

That is one of the reasons the media rush to pump out narratives, so they can go viral before the facts are known.

Turns out Floyd and the Officer worked together at a bar? Floyd was passing counterfit money...?

Could the cop be dirty and the enforcer for the funny money ring?

Did the two have bad blood between them?

Maybe a dispute over a woman?

Maybe they just didn't like each other?

Was the cop a bully who was showing off for the other 3 cops?

Why did the other 3 cops stand around?

Why wasn't the suspect (floyd) put in the police car?

Why leave him restrained on the ground ?

There are a lot of unanswered questions that are relevant and have NOTHING to do with race.

As usual we only get the most inflammatory piece of the story so we can be manipulated into fear, anger, and outrage. That is far more scary than racism will ever be. Rioters and lynch mobs roaming the streets based on reports from a disgraced media that has been caught lying and pushing agendas over and over again.

I Believe it! It's America. I usually don't get into the OT issues but I must agree with NE about turning the TV and social media off but instead of face to face - get into nature.. I did it over 2 years ago when I left the USA and rarely look back and have zero stress. I still have a landlording business there and I run it remotely and no need for face to face. I realized the whole system is a scam. The media controls the world. Race is an illusion but racism is real. Watching the tv and news only brings more of want you don't want so it is bad energy. I don't watch tv, listen to news or have social media anymore, I now spend most of my time in nature. You can say I get my entertainment and news on this Q&A and lately it has been very entertaining. It saddens me to hear what is happening but MYOB asked how to change it and what are our feelings. Im probably a minority but you go inside yourself to change it and the best way to do that is meditation and being in nature. You can't change the world but unity is how you win and that starts with love over fear. You find love first from within. I feel now is a new beginning and some will be a part of the great awakening and some will not. --5.62.xx.xxx

Did you notice the cop's name was Chauvin? As in chauvinist? Or as it was said in the sixties, male Chauvinist Pig? There was a well known person named Chauvin with bad attitudes toward women. I think we have one of his descendants in the news and the genes are the same, lol. Hammer has some good ideas there as to what is going on. There were three groups of people on display this weekend.... peaceful demonstrators, opportunists, and anarchists. The latter two did the burning, looting and robbing, and they'll do it anytime there's an excuse and demonstrators to hide behind. The rioters and looters should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

My biggest concern for the cops was that the officer that committed the murder had 18 prior incident reports in his file according to a news report. At what point do all these incidents justify firing? Was it the police union that kept him on the streets, the good old boy network, a pass by internal affairs, or something else? The police need to police their own otherwise this is going to happen again and again and again. And the reputation for police as a whole will be judged by the few bad apples.

If the police can't control or won't control the looters and rioters, then business owners should be given a pass for protecting their stores by any means necessary.

Thanks 6x6! My husband and I started looking to move overseas after the 2008 financial crisis. We believed we needed international diversification. We discovered Panama. Yes, it took us 10 years to travel, research, listen to people tell us we were crazy and doubt ourselves until we found a great opportunity for a farm in 2018. The best real estate investment we ever did. We are in the process of making it 100% self sufficient. Sound government, takes US dollars, no property taxes, low cost of living, high quality of life, great weather and great retirement benefits. We did downsize our US business so we can manage from afar but with all the benefits Panama offers it was worth it. --212.102.xx.xxx

Yes, that's the problem - people are listening to others and listening to the television and not experiencing it themselves. You must travel and see the world. The abundance of nature here is amazing. Panama prides itself on about 45% of the land is still forested but it has excellent infrastructure at the same time. I could go on and on so if you want to chat one on on leave your email or number....Yes, you can own and get title here just like the USA as a foreigner or resident. --212.102.xx.xxx

Society does need to change as whole, but change is difficult to achieve and even harder to keep implemented.

It hurts to see anyone disrespect another persons property

Violence is not the answer, but for many they believe there is no other way that their voices will be heard.

What hurts me the most is learning that many of the local actions were orchestrated from out of state groups. Vandalizing and burning a business only makes things worse.

So far locally, there has not been a loss of life. Violence leads to only more violence. An eye for an eye, leaves everyone blind

Recently released video from a bystander shows some sort of struggle inside the police car then an urgency with adrenalin when the arrested person seems to break loose out the other door to the street.

We don’t know what was happening inside the car (Who was resisting or attacking who) but it was not peaceful.

This reminds me of high speed car chases. Never back down. They have limited resources or options than to chase, usually ending in a crash often harming or killing innocent bystanders.

I believe frustration of the pandemic lockdown and mistrust of govt info and rules helped fuel the riots.

Back during the LA riots (80’s?) a friend from the area commented that humans are the only being that will defecate in and destroy it’s own home.

Curious to see where this takes our society.

In 2019 the police killed 19 unarmed white men, and 9 unarmed black men. In total 1004 individuals were killed by police in 2019, of those 370 were white, 235 were black, 158 were Hispanic, the race was unknown or “other” for the remainder. Statistically you are more likely to be killed by police if you are a white male. The men and women of our police force have an incredibly difficult job, they must make life and death decisions in a split second, and are expected to make the correct decision 100 percent of the time, (understandably). It’s easy to sit in your comfy chair in the safety of your home and say what a cop should have done, or could have done. Most, if not all police killings could be avoided by not resisting, fighting, and struggling with the police. As long as people choose to fight with the police, there will be excessive force cases. Training for law enforcement will help, but it won’t eliminate it. The police have no way of knowing that the person they are struggling with is just trying to get away, how far they will go to get away, or simply trying to kill them. As I said before, it’s easy to say after the fact that so-in-so was just trying to get away, they weren’t even armed! I don’t believe George Floyd’s death was race related, it was an excessive use of force issue. I don’t believe for a second those officers intended to kill him! I think that Minnesota’s Attorney General charged Officer Chauvin correctly the first time with the charge of 3rd degree murder, and 2nd degree manslaughter. The media has whipped this up into a race issue, as a result of that and the public outcry it incited I feel they were pressured to up the charges to 2nd degree murder. --174.242.xx.xx

You should Google a local case a few years back here where I am. It is horrific. Knoxville TN. Murder case. Christopher Newsom and Shannon Christian were brutally tortured and raped and cut up and put in a trash can by a gang of black men and women. After the long and drawn out trial was all over then the judge was found to have been on drugs and the whole trial had to be done over. You really should look it up. --73.120.xx.xxx
