I had to work on a home with very old CPVC pipe that was installed over 20 years ago. CPVC gets very brittle with age. I had to cut a piece of 1/2 inch pipe located in a confined space, no room for a hacksaw or even a hand held hacksaw blade. The normal scissor type pipe PVC cutter would just shatter the pipe, leaving the end broken off at a 45 degree angle. In desperation, I tried a compact copper tubing cutter made by Ridgid. Worked perfect and left a clean, square end ready for the Sharkbite fitting.
I am not a plumber by trade. This is just something I learned and wanted to pass along to help someone else. I have read that CPVC fire sprinkler lines can fail suddenly and cause a flood. There are law suits ongoing about the failures and flood damage. --96.234.xxx.xx |

That's a great tip! Glad all worked out for you. Love those shatk bits! --99.203.xx.xxx |

Slowly tightening a Pipe Hand Cutter will work
cutting plastic pipe, in extreme cases.
but will need the pipe end reamed and chamfered
before installing.
Licensed contractors use the Ratcheting type cutters
and/or a chop saw for straight cuts.
As far as the Plastic (Fire Protection) Sprinkler Pipe,
(NFPA rated for use, schedule 40, orange in color)
if the ends are properly prepared,
the correct Primer/Glue is used,
and given ample time to bond,
and hydro testing (with water) is done at 200 lbs
for 2 hours, successfully,
future problems with this pipe and joints are extremely
limited.

I forget the specifics now, but I remember a long time ago (like 30 yrs) we used an angle head drill motor with a milling blade (like a drill bit but the sides are sharp) to cut a pipe that was hard to reach. I think it was copper though.
This was long before the new plumbers miracle tool, the small battery sawzall. :D
If you want an exercise in tedium, I also have a bent hacksaw blade with duck tape around one end as a handle that can be used to make tight cuts. Note - the louder you curse while using that torture tool of misery, the easier it cuts... --47.216.xx.xxx |

I would make a plan to replace all that brittle pipe, any vibrations will start the cracking process just like you had with the slicer tool. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

Vee ( OH ) I agree. I have all the tools for PEX and plan to go that way. This is a foreclosure that was copper stripped and / or frozen. The " plumber " probably drank a lot while working :-) --96.234.xxx.xx |

Great tip, thanks!
I put CPVC in one house. One. Never again. The existing plumbing was CPVC and so we did some upgrading in the same. Leaks everywhere from disturbing the pipes, and every single shutoff leaked over time. --204.210.xxx.xxx |

Del,
Here's a Red Green solution:
Fill the pipe with water. Freeze it. The ice will support the plastic while you flail on it. Seal the freeze carcks with duck tape. Done!
