- The toll on the economy. At a certain point you will hear things like: Other diseases kill more, yet we don't close the economy because of them!

- You can't prolong a situation where 23 million (or more) are unemployed and drawing unemployment payments from a bankrupt country.

- People will join protests across the country to open, and will become more vocal. Cabin fever will push them out. Money troubles will push them out. Governors will find it impossible to force them back into their homes.

- Possible vaccine. It won't take 18 months to find a vaccine as doctors told us. The process and approval will be on fast forward. --99.59.x.xxx

Sooner than later. The protests and civil unrest may become a factor. We have a friend involved with small clinical trials of treatment and there are some promising results. That alone could be a game changer if they quickly figure out combinations of drugs and optimal timing to administer. I think antibody testing would also show many more have had it. They did a small 200 person test in MA and 30% tested positive for the antibody and said they had 1 symptom over the previous month. Our small town still shows 5-9 cases and yet 2 of my friends in the next neighborhood weren’t tested and are not included in the numbers. Figuring out if an area has 10% or 40% who have had it will make a huge difference in determining opening up if they can figure out how to do widespread antibody testing. --73.17.xx.xxx

Step 1: Healthy, younger people who show no symptoms should be immediately tested and if cleared they should be released from all restrictions: period. They might carry the virus, but if we follow step 2 that will not be a problem.

Step 2: Older people and/or people who have risk factors should be kept in quarantine and limited contact. They will not get sick unless they decide to hug their grand kids in spite of repeated warnings that this is dumb behavior. In that case, c'est la vie. Don't be dumb. They can continue to have supplies delivered to them via sanitized measures that are the same or better than those currently in place today that are already being used, such as door delivery that many grocery stores offer.

That's what should happen. What will really happen? I don't know. My crystal ball is still on the fritz. My guess / SWAG is early to mid-May some states/cities will start to follow the federally issued guidelines and doing staged reopening. If all goes well, we could be back to mostly normal by end of June/early July.

Will the virus flare up again in the Fall? Maybe / maybe not. No one knows. We might have a decent enough herd immunity built up by then to deflect any massive upsurge.

Everyone talks about "you can't put a $ amount on lives." Actually we do that all the time. The Govt figures the life of a human is between $5 million - $9 million. The military spends so many dollars per solider on protective equipment, knowing that some will die due to lack of certain resources. Judges set limits on death and dismemberment civil cases all day, every day. Insurance companies charge so many dollars in premium for a payout of $Y life insurance benefits. Car manufacturers spend $Z on safety features knowing that 60,000 or so people will die on US highways every year due to lack of certain safety features, but their customers will refuse to pay more for a car if they spend $Z + $1,000,000,000 on safety features. Cities enact new construction and habitability codes but yet they grandfather in older, less safe structures knowing that the cost to retrofit would be too high and tax payers won't vote to stomach the financial burden. This leads to some injuries and occasional deaths.

Bottom line is we put dollar values on lives all the time. The question now is how many dollars are we putting on each life "saved", and at what point will people say "that's enough?" My guess is we've got 1, maybe 2 more months before people say "that's enough." I could be wrong. --107.216.xxx.xxx

A lot more people are going to be dying other other diseases than C-19 year after year after year. Perhaps we should open up from the c-19 lock down and then lock down for cancer, and after that lock down - we lock down for heart disease. We can come up with a reason on why not to act.

Be smart when you are being dumb.

Today is the first day where we have to wear a mask state wide because there is not a wide testing program, at the same time our local hospital is cutting back testing hours because there isn't enough demand for testing.

My only question is what monkey is carrying the greased football today - collectively, politicians are not scoring big points with me. Doesn't matter the party... --24.101.xxx.xx

I’m so sick of Covid 19 being an excuse for EVERYTHING , even when it doesn’t make sense. I understand that it is very contagious and there are groups of people who will still need to stay home. There are so many more that need to go back to work. I don’t even care if places like the banks stay drive through only forever now because it’s probably good for people to learn to do more online. This thing is really contagious. A couple of Chinese businessmen or tourists turned into 735,214 cases in just a couple of months. It only takes a few infected people to open the floodgates.

I think that more businesses can be opened up with some proper precautions, but the pandemic isn't over until there is either a reliable cure or a vaccine that works.

Even a quick and easy test would help a lot. People with antibodies could be sent back to work immediately.

At first it was considered an old person's disease. Not any longer.

It does seem that SUSTAINED contact is more of a issue than a casual encounter, but we honestly don't even know that for sure.

To compare this to heart attacks or cancer is just redamdiculous. I can't give you cancer by giving you a hug. Heart attacks are not contagious. They are also not going up at an exponential rate, but have remained a rather steady cause of death for decades. This thing took off like a rocket, climbing straight up the charts, and if we hadn't attempted to flatten that line, curve it downward, it could have wiped out Manhattan. Might still. --50.82.xxx.xxx

It is quite amazing to me how we basically shut down the entire US economy to try to stop the spread. While I was quite happy to take many steps to ensure proper distancing and any other reasonable measures to keep people reasonably safe, if you weren't in a high risk category we shouldn't have gone to such extremes.

While I agree that high risk folks should self quarantine as long as they wish to, for the good of the country and our economy we must take the steps necessary now to begin reopening our businesses. For those cities with much denser populations then take reopenings even slower. It shouldn't be as hard as we have made it.

I think back to the Greatest Generation. They never would have let a virus (even as dangerous as this one is) take down their economy or push them into another Great Depression. They would have preferred to die with their workboots on than to cower inside their homes waiting for an invisible enemy to kill them or pass by. --73.25.xx.xxx

They came out with generic risk factors like smoking, diabetes and heart disease, which is a duh sort of statement. But then middle-aged people got it and died. And then young healthy people got it and died. Health care workers are dying.

And it's not just attacking the lungs, we now know. But kidneys and other organs. Suddenly noticing lesions on the feet are a symptom. And it apparently doesn't always start with a cough and a fever, but GI issues can be first.

It is wickedly contagious and we just don't know what we don't know. --50.82.xxx.xxx

When will this end?

This is a difficult question, because a lot depends on how well the virus is contained. A better question might be: “How will we know when to reopen the country?” In an American Enterprise Institute report, Scott Gottlieb, Caitlin Rivers, Mark B. McClellan, Lauren Silvis and Crystal Watson staked out four goal posts for recovery: Hospitals in the state must be able to safely treat all patients requiring hospitalization, without resorting to crisis standards of care; the state needs to be able to at least test everyone who has symptoms; the state is able to conduct monitoring of confirmed cases and contacts; and there must be a sustained reduction in cases for at least 14 days. --50.82.xxx.xxx

John, people are going to die either way. They always have and they always will.

We can fool ourselves into thinking we can beat the odds (and maybe we can prevent some deaths). But so many of the same folks who have actually died from this virus could have just as easily have died from the regular ol' flu they get this October, from a cold, then pneumonia, or a million other reasons.

So, at best, for many of these folks we maybe bought them a few months. Maybe a little longer. But again, at what price? Like Sid alluded to, at some point we have to decide how much it's costing us vs. the benefit. Whether we want to think about it or not collateral damage is still valid. --73.25.xx.xxx

Living in the alleged #3 hot spot state and seeing all but 1 at the grocery store today wearing a mask I have my doubts.

I always thought June but I'm not sure with numbers climbing. --173.48.xxx.xxx

It is so easy for us in the US to say don't over run the medical system in place. This is a luxury we have to choose that or not.

I truly bad for places especially in Africa and SE Asia that are not even developed enough to be third world. Seven million people in Serra Leon and a single ventilator for a million residents.

Will that virus spread like wild fire? Sure, but something more amazing happened a few years back. That same country with its backward medicine stop the Ebola virus with its death rate at 50% not 2%. When can we open the US? The answer will be based on race. We are all human and we will have to muddle thru this together some how.

No one said it was going to be pretty

What I don't understand from the group - why aren't you asking a much more important question for your biz......how will this current or future continued shut down do for real estate values and what is the best way to seize upon that opportunity? --24.101.xxx.xx

The vaccine will be 2022 or 2023 before it gets to the majority of the population. You have to create it, then test it, then manufacturer it, then it goes to high priority people (healthcare workers, first responders) then spin up millions and millions for the rest of us.

NE, your phone is already tracking you. --66.42.xxx.xx

NE, if by turning this baby loose you mean all hands on deck, back to work, floodgates open, no whining: what about those who don't WANT to go out in public yet, like Laura? What if she had a compromised immune system? If she had a job, she would be compelled to return to work anyway. If she didn't she'd lose that job. --50.82.xxx.xxx

WMH, then they stay home. I doubt their employers are going to fire them if they are still scared. It's going to take several weeks to return to normal once everything is opened anyways.

Too many "what ifs". Let's get this show on the road. --174.198.xx.xx

We live with risk every day, heart disease and tobacco use kill a few thousand Americans every day, we accept those risks and those almost 100% preventable deaths. My electrician was panicking about covid and wearing a mask, he's about 100 pounds overweight and a heavy smoker...

So yeah wear masks, wash your hands, if your old or infirm stay out of public places. Let the rest of us get back to work. --185.244.xxx.xxx

Chris (CT), that is sad, but funny in a way.

The guy's obviously scared of the virus and of dying, but he's out there every day knocking on death's door; heavy smoker and 100 pounds overweight. Incredible how people's priorities suffer from such a lack of common sense. --73.25.xx.xxx
