I just talked to my expensive but intelligent plumber and he likes the ideas. First of all there has to be constant negative pressure when someone enter so the fan goes on right away. It should have ultraviolet built into the fan to sanitize the outflowing air. Every bathroom should have ultraviolet light inside when there is NO ONE using it to sanitize air and break up virus particles. Since that air is not good to breathe, the fan should run at a low level to pull out any toxins that creates. Then there could be the injection of a bacteriocide and virocide gas after every use. I don't know what that is but I have a name to contact now. So that would have to disappear and/or dry before re-use so the bathroom door should relock for a period of time until the room has been sanitized and is safe to re enter. My idea is an entire self disinfecting bath ROOM, not just the toilet. I think I will use the second bathroom in the basement at my huge Federal Period looking duplex. That way it's close by. So a medical clinic has to be extra clean and thank you for mentioning that someone would have to clean filters, etc. So maybe the bathroom retrofit has to be serviced by a company with trained suited up workers. So passive ultraviolet light is still a good idea in bathrooms instead of other light. Here's what Columbia Univ. says about it. .Columbia University Irving Medical Center says say broad-spectrum germicidal UV Light can kill bacteria and viruses. In fact, it’s often used to decontaminate airplanes and hospitals. But, it’s done with robots or without human exposure. That’s because our experts say contact with UV-A and UV-B light is dangerous. UV-A and UV-B light can cause skin cancer and cataracts. So likely a person would not be in the bathroom long enough to sustain skin burns and sunglasses would protect the eyes. I wonder how much people are willing to do to prevent another catastrophe like this one. So what about leaving out filters and just have the fans transport air out constantly creating negative pressure? I talked to my ultraviolet installation expert and he said the ozone produced by the light would make an extra antibacterial/viral gas unnecessary. I don't think people wash the walls in public bathrooms very often so maybe a once a week spray with aerosol of chlorine like they do on ships or maybe just peroxide which turns to hydrogen and water? My ultraviolet expert says the biggest issue for my plan would be the timers to lock the bathroom doors during cleaning spraying and turn on a built in sprayer. 1) Self cleaning bathrooms already exist in Europe, as well as in US cities such as New York, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. They are extremely expensive. (I understand these are stand alone units) 2) Building owners and businesses are never going to pay an extraordinary amount of money to install self cleaning bathrooms when it is only eliminating a very small percentage of viral transmission. The most common way people contract viruses is direct contact with infected people, and from contact with surfaces the virus is on, then touching their eyes, mouth, or nose before washing their hands. 3) The bathroom could only be single occupancy, almost all commercial bathrooms are designed to accommodate multiple people. How would you prevent this self clean feature from going off if someone is still in there when there is more than 1 occupant. Ally I applaud you for thinking outside of the box, and think you are an extremely caring person for trying to think up a way to prevent the spread of viruses such as the flu. I just think your time, effort, and money would be better spent trying to find a way to reduce or eliminate the more common ways that viruses are spread.
