Just saw Amanpour on TV. She said one bright spot in the China virus -- as she overlayed a satellite image of China pre and post virus-- the factories are shut down and now there's clean air she said???

Don't think the dead care about clean air or not? Maybe they did at one time but not any more--- think they would prefer being alive.

And this, I believe, is the nature of today's politics. People are quick to criticize those with whom they have political differences, yet blithely overlook comments and statements made by their own party members that are equally, or more absurd.

I believe we could tear apart every politician's comments, inserting our own interpretation.

I typically don't respond to anything political on this site that doesn't impact my role as landlord. This social distancing must have me feeling more feisty!

There will be more carpooling though. My Spanish friend says the reason Americans don't carpool is if they did they couldn't pick their nose. Now that we keep our hands away from our face (don't pick our noses) we can carpool more.

Fred: Young people? Whatever. I've seen a LOT of 50+ people over the years walk out of bathrooms without even washing their hands. This isn't an age-specific thing. This isn't about millennials versus boomers.

What I'm seeing more of right now is the younger crowd going "Ok, I'm going to make sure I wash my hands more and be careful" -- while, at the same time, I see some older people still refusing to believe that there is really a problem. Heck, I'm watching live TV of the President and several other political "experts" telling everyone to stay away from others and avoid contact -- and then each one freakin' shakes hands with the President as they finish their little bit! Come on, people, at least take your own advice when you're standing there on live TV!

I also find it interesting that if Amanpour says there is at least a "bright spot" in this, then they are ridiculed for being insensitive to the deaths of thousands.

But if Fred here says that "something very positive" came out of it and makes an apparent joke about young people washing their hands, then it is just good humor.

That some people here don't see that irony is incredible to me. (And I don't mean you, Jeffrey.) I don't see people jumping on Fred for finding his own "bright spot" in this...

Maybe we're all gone mad? My post wasn't meant to be political but to show how we are treating each other concerning EVERYTHING.

I thought the post about washing was funny and certainly not hate full to those under 50. My objection was the washing after peeing (for men). Many have had remarks that you don't wash after peeing? Generally no I don't. I was in the Navy and they taught us not to pee on our hands. Marines- Army- Air Force-- well you wash up really good now.

MYOB, I always wonder about that: why do men have to wash after peeing? I've not seen my husband pee on his hands ever! The FLOOR maybe, and the SEAT, but not his hands. ;)

Not to take a morbid point of view, but from the point of view of epidemiological statistics, the figures are staggering because most Americans cannot grasp the huge size of China's population.

The city of Wuhan alone has 11 million people. Coronavirus mortality rate is about 2%, which in a controlled environment would mean, not a fatal disease, but an epidemic with some fatalities. 2% of 11 million people (Wuhan City alone) is 220,000 deaths, if everyone in Wuhan City were to contract the disease.. Thats a substantial tragedy in number of human lives, but a drop in the bucket (no pun intended) as a fraction of China's population. It means that most people in China will survive the epidemic, while a few families will lose loved ones, but nothing like previous epidemics like the Plague in Europe in 14th Century (75 to 200 million dead) or even the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic that killed 17 to 50 million.

Fortunately, at this stage of civilization, we know how to create vaccine (hopefully to be ready soon) which promises to mitigate the spread of this pandemic.

Yet I see airports allowing thousands of Americans who were overseas,..some in highly infected countries back in the country. You would think they would still quarantine them in place,..even if they paid their reasonable hotel and food bills for a prescribed time,..

in Korea,it seems to be winding down,.with totaling around 79 people in a country of 51.5 million that borders China.

OK,..the Swine flu -in 2009-10, just in the USA experienced 60 million infected, 300,000 hospitalized, 13,000 deaths. We had no hysteria from the media, the DNC or the NWO globalists. No schools closed, no universities closed, no travel restraints/restrictions, no stock market going berserk, no Broadway closures, no MLB or NHL scheduled games canceled, no huge bailouts, no nothing like this idiocy. Sure, be careful, have personal hygiene, but this overreacting is nothing more than Chicken Little hysteria.

So, as you said, out of 60,000,000 infected, only 13,000 died. That didn't worry people that much -- so there wasn't the same reaction.

If 60,000,000 people get infected with COVID-19, current estimates would mean 1,200,000 people. Again, literally 100x that of the Swine Flu.

THAT is why this is different. Not because of "media hysteria" or "Chicken Little hysteria." It's simply because, if it spreads anywhere nearly as bad as Swine Flu did, then we're looking at over a million deaths.

How do you not see the difference there?
