Once again, ladies and gentlemen. This is the third major crash of my remembered lifetime. The second one is what got us into real estate...but we are still taking a hit on this one.

Watching carefully.

I took my state teacher's retirement out of that system and invested it in the market in about 2011-2012. We have a lot more in real estate, though. That said, I'll still need what is in the market.

Luckily, I still have at least 10 years before I expect to start drawing out what is in the market. So, I'm simply watching. Some of what I have is in travel companies, so that is in free fall. A lot in energy, which is down, but not horribly.

In general, I'm well diversified.

First I heard of it was this post....

The stock market is like a roller coaster. If you jump off during the ride, that's when you get injured. You want to wait until you're back to solid, steady ground. The market will recover, or our country will crash. If the first happens, you win. If the second thing happens, it doesn't matter if/when you jump out: we're all in trouble if the US craters.

Probably the only people who are really in trouble today are those who are:

1) panic selling

2) getting margin calls

3) have no other source of income and have to cash in to live

4) are required to sell for RMD from retirement accounts, though they have some time for 2020 yet

There could be others, I suppose. But those of us prepared to ride the wave are fine.

One of the reasons I own rentals is to generate a fairly steady, predictable cash flow sufficient to meet my needs. When I'm retired, I will only sell out of stocks when the market is in "up" territory. Being able to weather the bad times is part of investment fundamentals. Never put yourself in a position where you HAVE to sell. If the Gub'mint would get rid of those doggone required mandatory distributions from retirement accounts we'd not have to worry about shtick like this.

It's not a crash. The market itself is at very high levels. What we have are several million people sitting at home trading on their computers. They have no spine and are in it to take profits. You saw this on Christmas Eve last year and on one Friday this year, I forget which. I saw one guy on tv who said he sold something high last week and he's buying now. I suggest that people hold on. Fillup your car with gas. Turn up the heat to a comfortable level for a change and buy something you have been wanting for awhile. --173.61.xxx.xx

We've had several financial advisers over the years, one of whom ignored our clear instructions NOT to put us in his asset allocation model (due to our rare circumstances at the time), and another who totally messed up my IRA which took our CPA and me more than a half-dozen hours to get straight, causing us a fine from the IRS - for which the broker reimbursed us. We ended up firing each adviser in succession. (These, and other, unfortunate financial events when we unwittingly trusted financial advisers, are what drew us to start buying rental homes back in 2001.)

We've never had so much peace about the market's ups and downs as we've had since discovering Dan Celia and his Financial Issues Stewardship Ministries. For $85/year we can look online at his buy and sell recommendations every week. I recommend it for anyone who's looking for a different way to approach this stuff. (You can also listen to the show as a podcast, or on facebook live, or on several radio stations (9 am - noon Eastern time on week days).

For now, he's not recommending selling any of the many stocks he tracks, and he does recommend a few buys while the market is low.

It is scary to have a market drop like this if you're going it alone, but having some hand-holding by a professional can keep you calm and optimistic. Some good stocks are having a great sale right now, but personally, we would only buy stocks that are recommended by FISM. --71.246.xxx.xxx

I was just listening to a Joe Rogan podcast with Michael Osterholm - infectious disease expert. He said he told a friend that night that the markets would tank on Monday, after watching their reactions, and they did.

Thanks for advice, Pmh.

There is actually much more to this than buying low and selling high - too much to expound on here.

But Dan's research into the moral stances of companies with publicly traded stocks is one of the many benefits that we've not seen elsewhere. No matter how profitable a company, if it promotes or supports such things as gambling, a bor tion, or por nograph y, etc., Dan doesn't track their stocks or include them on his lists. We know what our money is supporting and are not unwittingly supporting anything we personally oppose. This is just one example.

Have a look at financialissues. org if you want to; the benefits we've received far outweigh any benefits we've experienced from any other source over the many years we've been acquainted with various brokers and advisers, Christian or otherwise. --71.246.xxx.xxx
