Just read the conditions for medical personnel to be considered PUI, which is person under investigation, due to coronavirus. One is being coughed on by a known virus patient while not wearing a mask. The other is sharing a waiting room for a prolonged period of time. So health care personnel are being protected by an N95 mask if they are coughed on, but the CDC is telling regular folk they don't need it. That's from a CDC bulletin. If you go there look up the virus and ask they will send you bulletins. --173.61.xxx.xx

Yellow journalism isn't helping matters. When we look at statistics for things like the flu it would be interesting to see side by side how corona 19 stacks up fatality wise. I went shopping today, and saw no signs of people panicking around here. Still, I decided to buy just a little more ahead of what I usually do. I did the same thing in the run up to Y2K. For both, I figured that if nothing happens, I just have stuff to eat through and use, and won't have a lot of non-perishables shopping to do for maybe a month.

I'm of the opinion, like most here, that this is WAY overhyped. Still, we don't know exactly how bad this will be, as most of us have no resistance to any of the coronaviruses (I think). Hubby and I are both on the wrong side of 60, so staying quietly home if the virus becomes rampant could be smart - and we'd have the food to do it, up to a point.

We always ask ourselves, "What would a prudent person do?" --98.115.xxx.xxx

I was in 5 stores before I found the travel hand sanitizers and small Clorox wipe packages. Then I stopped into Trader Joe’s to grab a few things and unlike snow storms that clear out all the fresh food, the can goods were cleared out. I’m not sure if it’s this way all over NH or locally since the news published we have students and staff from a local school district and another farther away on home quarantine because they just returned from school sponsored trips from Northern Italy and our first confirmed case in NH was a medical professional working in a hospital I believe.

Since I'm a contractor working for landlords and a landlord myself, I keep stock of most needed goods to fix anything related to rentals.

I have no time to drive to a supply house or a Home Depot and find, "out of stock". Or wait in a long line to pay for things. Even when online it says, "in stock", around 15% of the time the few left in stock "have no home" and can't be located easily.

For this reason I buy everything in quantity and at wholesale. Because I look for "good" pricing, I can afford to buy the "upgraded" version -- higher quality and lasts longer.

As one of the expendable 20% at age 73 with iffy immune system following radiation in 2014, I am paying close attention. So they say that 80 % of people will have a mild case. I don't understand why these huge numbers of deaths with the regular flu are allowed to happen. This week a 60 year old cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic died of an unusual infection following the regular flu. He had the flu shot but it's only 50% effective. My doctor, who is really good, told me not to have the enhanced double strength flu shot for the elderly because he seeing problems with it. He told me to come there for the regular one. Unfortunately I lost eyesight due to deposits on my cataract lenses and could not drive there. I had them lasered off and can see perfectly now but don't want to go to a medical office and breathe in some virus BEWARE OF supermarket checkers. Use the self checkout if there is one. I got the worst virus from one last summer. She had it and was at work and told me her boss had just come back from China and made everyone sick at the store. Nice. Thank you. So I went to the ear nose and throat doctor and he confirmed "some virus" no test and an allergy on top of that which he said would go away when everything froze up. So I am pretty much OK now but it's been so warm that everything didn't "freeze up" so I have some distress. So remember, stay out of public toilets, and use the self checkout if you can. CDC wants people to stay 6 feet apart so no droplets of spit are exchanged. Oh, and men, it's in urine too so don't get too close to another at the urinal, splashes and all that. --173.61.xxx.xx

Just watched a senate committee question WHO, CDC and NIH spokespersons. The US has zero capacity to make vaccines except in eggs which is not useful for COVID. There is a Drug Shortage List due to drug manufacture in China and other countries who have stopped sending due to shortages. The N95 Construction masks have been approved for health care workers. They also admitted that they work for people like us to prevent spit containing virus from getting on our faces. Eyewear is useful also and they said yesterday not to touch your ears. I was told that the ear drum transmits virus also. There are not test kits, a million, that can be sent out as of Friday. It's a PCR test so it's on a piece of something that can be dipped into a nasal secretion or cough secretion. Yesterday I read that health care workers who are around actual virus patients are tested if they EVEN GET A SORE THROAT. So that's information that it can start with a sore throat. A Department of Homeland Security building has just been shut down in Washington State and they think the virus has been circulating for weeks. The rest of the information was what Senators need to know to allocate funds. Hope this helps. --173.61.xxx.xx

Stay home if your sick, stay way from sick people, wash your hands frequently and keep you fingers where they belong which is away from your eyes nose mouth etc. All things we should be doing anyhow.

If I understand gov. There are several agencies that gain extra money for their budget when things like this go viral. This will boost their allowance next year even if this situation has resolved. If I am wrong on that regard hopefully someone will correct me. I don't want to add to misinformation. But right now I personally agree, we have a "new disease" but I am a little suspect over the hype. --68.107.xxx.x

OT Signs of panic? (by John... [MI]) Posted on: Mar 3, 2020 1:42 PM
Message:

Agreed. Also, just to reference Ally's most recent post. Most experts are saying to NOT go out and buy and wear face masks if you are not sick. In most cases, this has a DETRIMENTAL affect on the situation. For healthy people, face masks generally do not protect you from the particles that spread COVID-19 because they generally do not seal tightly. And, even worse, most people that start wearing these masks that aren't used to them tend to constantly touch/adjust them! This makes it WORSE as you spread germs from your hands to your face.

So, again, most of the guidance out there says to NOT go buy and wear masks if you are currently healthy. Especially since this would deplete the supply of N95 masks for the people that actually need them.

They do recommend that people that are sick (with anything really) wear masks if they must go out in public -- mainly to help catch droplets if they cough/sneeze/whatever. But, as Barbara said, the better solution there is stay home if you are sick, if you can.

Long story short: please don't run out and buy up the N95 masks. They don't help you -- and may actually hurt you.

I agree with John and Barbara. I have said this before, if someone wants to be vigilant and is worried about getting COVID-19, or ANY VIRUS for that matter they should avoid sick people if possible, frequently wash their hands, avoid touching their nose, mouth, and eyes, etc, etc. If you want to raise public awareness that’s fine, but make sure you are using factual information. As many know I’m a firefighter, we assist on medical calls. Anytime an ambulance is dispatched so are we. The uptick in calls for people that think they have COVID-19 is insanity. These people have nothing more than a sniffle, but we have to respond. This is taking resources away from calls that truly need EMT’s/paramedics. All because people are getting paranoid, take a breath as was said above. There were roughly 22 million reported cases of the flu in the US this year, that doesn’t count all the cases that weren’t reported, there are about 100 cases of CONVID-19 in the US. Be cautious, nobody wants to get sick, but don’t panic. --72.93.xxx.xx

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol” This is from the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) “Alcohol solutions containing 60% to 95% alcohol are most effective”, “Alcohol based hand sanitizers are very effective for quickly destroying many pathogens by the action of the aqueous alcohol solution without the need for water or drying with towels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alcohols have excellent in vitro germicidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative vegetative bacteria, including multidrug-resistant pathogens (MRSA, VRE), Mycobacterium tuberculosis, HIV, influenza virus, RSV, vaccinia, and hepatitis B and C viruses.” I’ve tried to be respectful to you Ally, I just showed you articles that support what I’m saying, why don’t you reference some articles that support that squat toilets create pressure in the rectum causing aerosolized diarrhea, that squat toilets have anything to do with the COVID-19 virus spreading, or any of the other paranoid things you posted about. Actual articles I can look up and read Ally, not what your eye doctor said, or what a supervisor at the local Department of Transportation told you in the hardware store! Barbara and JKJ are correct -- as usual.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers work by basically destroying the MEMBRANE of various microorganisms. That means that they not only kill bacterial germs, but also are effective against many, many viruses too -- including Covid-19.

Sorry, pmh, but you're just plain wrong on this one.

Do you NEED hand sanitizer to kill it? No, proper washing with soap and water are just as effective (or moreso in some cases) in removing it. But is it still very useful when you don't have soap and water handy? Absolutely! They work at killing many viruses, including this one.

Just so you know, that is how "proof" works with alcohol. Whatever the "proof" number is represents double the alcohol content percentage.

So, "80 proof" whiskey is 40% alcohol. "Bacardi 151" is "151 proof" which is 75.5% alcohol. That sort of thing.
