I was buying some paint at HD this week, and noticed that the oops rack was overfilled with clearance paint cans - one gallon cans, 5 gallon cans, quart cans and even sample cans.

Then I noticed the colors. I thought: Do people really use these colors?

On the price sticker it says: non returnable.

They should add: non abandoable.

Have you ever bought oops paints? --99.59.x.xxx

I have, but not for use in a rental.

I think it would be most useful for an accent wall or such in a property that is to be sold- so you don't need to worry about touch-up later. --68.10.xxx.x

Here's the inside scoop. When paint is mixed wrong sheen or returned they will mix in some odd color combo so that person can't repurchase the paint on clearance. The guy at Lowes told me this information. However i have bought some pretty normal colors and have painted alot of feature walls with oops paint. Once i bought 6 gallons of the same netural color. At the check out it printed rebates. My $11 gallon oops paint came with $10 gallon rebate! The whole house got painted. It was a great day! --99.203.xx.xxx

When I first started out land-lording I used to buy up to 30 gallons of oops paint mix them all together and that was the color I was going to use. As I became more successful I was able to choose my colors not have to rely on whatever came out. --99.23.xxx.x

Yes, for my "C" grade apartment in the slums, I don't mind an OOPS color to touch up a current tenants interiors where they made a mess and Housing says I have to re-paint, even though the tenants have only been there just over 1 year...So long as the color is tolerable and the Quality of the paint is top rate...I'll give it a try... --47.156.xxx.xxx

Fred (CA) ask “Have you ever bought oops paints?”

I bought some a while back. I had gone to SW and was asking about their used paint. Salesman told me it was in the back and just go look.

I looked and then ask what was the price. $3 per gallon. It was at the end of the year and they HAD to get rid of it.

Lets make a deal. I will buy all of it for 25 cents per gallon. I wound up buying about 900 gallons.

I have painted 5 or 6 houses, sold a gob of it for $3 a gallon and now just give it away to anyone who wants some paint. I gave 30 gallons to another landlord a couple of weeks ago.

Trouble is that most of the labels have came off the cans so I can’t tell what is what – color, oil or water based, etc. I guess it is still good for painting an out house or a barn or shed.

Not so much anymore. 10-15 years ago was more apt to find tolerable colors-- not anymore. UNLESS the store is in the process of discontinuing a product. Technically that is not OOPS paint, but a deep discount on a product line they are wanting to clear out. --71.212.xxx.xxx

Yes, Lowe's tweaks it so people can't "rebuy" it cheaper. Depends on Management can it go lower. It is frequently paint returned due to whatever reason-the customer only needed a little(which is really stealing), didn't like the color,sheen,etc..I agree it would be good for an accent wall. They can color match up to point if you need more but it would be full price but doable. Just know for sure what sheen as some are close if you need more. --73.230.xxx.xx

ALL the time. 17.00 for a 5 gal bucket? If your careful and know something about color mixing using Crayola as a guide you can get enough to paint the outside of a house. I have my MMan mix 3 good colors for 15 gals. Then if I'm just a little off I take the sample to paint table and have them mix up a match to what I need. So 15 gals for 56.00.

Miss tint paint is also available at the Habitat for Humanity restores. Often buy a couple of cans then buy some white cans where mix up in 20 litre bucket. Miss tint paints are usually at the back of most paint stores where can ask. Miss tints can also be used as primer. --147.194.xxx.xx

I look when I’m there if I know I’m gonna need paint. Like others I look for “doable neutral colors”, I found a grey one once that I used in a common area. It was top of the line Behr paint. I had the paint dept mix up a quart so I knew it would match, once I was satisfied it matched I kept it for touch ups but mainly so I had the paint code. Funny thing is they mixed up 2 or 3 quarts attempting to match it before they got it right, I imagine those ended up in the oops rack. Other than that 1 time I usually only see colors that resemble vomit and dog $hit. --174.199.x.xx

I used to take the left overs and mix them together to paint the garage, usually it came out some flavor of brown. Last time I did it somehow it went on brown but dried to a rose/purple color. It was hideous, I had to repaint it. That was 15 years ago, I won't do that again. --50.26.xx.xxx

Nicole PA, Lowes is almost always higher, even on their garbage.

I go there because it's close and the difference in price is not worth the drive to HD, in most cases.

They used to match prices, on exact same products (and manufacturers), but quit that too.

Let's face it, they are perpetually flirting with bankruptcy. --99.59.x.xxx

I used one standard color for the walls in all my houses. Sometimes would repaint just one wall in a room and it looked great.

I used the OOPS for the interior of closets and for basement stairways. --66.44.xxx.xxx

Another vote for basement stairways and closets!

Also started using on the sections of basement Waltham keep ‘spalling/efflourescing ‘ as all of my basements were previously painted, so spending the big bucks on Drylock hasn’t always worked so well. As other mentioned, I mix the colors to get something fairly neutral. Then just HEPA vac and touch up those spots once a year or so. Getting less and less chipping/flaking off as the paint layers get thicker, and as my water diversion ( gutters/downspouts/grading) gets better and better. --70.92.xxx.xxx

I used to use just oops paint, when it was really marked down and at least a decent color. Mixing sheen isn't a big deal, I usually make a small batch of mixed colors to test it out and get the rough ratio. Once I know the colors dries decent, I will mix up the rest.

But you are correct, their tweaking the color so it isn't bought as OOPS creates some awful colors. I have a small unit coming vacant soon after 7 years, so I am on the look out for decent OOPS when I am at the store. Certainly the price is still better than buying at full price, but not almost a giveaway as it used to be. Paint is just so much more expensive these days. But then there are always leftovers from my own personal painting that get mixed in too. --108.4.xxx.xx

On very rare occasions. I am happy to use it for closet (if light color) or basement stairwell, maybe an accent wall on rare occasion, but not for a lot of stuff. Too risky.

I usually get at least 5 years out of my Benjamin Moore paint, and stick with the same color so that I have one coat coverage and can touch up. --64.251.xxx.xxx

NO! Years ago my other half and his sister owned a house; she decided to use a OOPS paint when it was empty. Did not have enough to finish the job and matching was nearly impossible. That and the terrible paint job she did made him say -- from now on we use X paint in X color for ALL rentals so we do not have to go through this again.

Now that we are into multi-family (without the sister), we use a certain brand in a certain color, and that's what all of the units get. Touch up is easy and they look uniform. If the tenant wants color, they can buy some throw pillows or a bright shower curtain instead. Now that we have switched to VPF, they can get a colorful area rug if they want color. --209.132.xxx.xxx
