Older black woman has been so eager to get place, she's even been parked out in front of apartment some days while application was run through. I get the feeling she's having trouble living with her sons family and hellbent on getting out of there. Good income and everything checked out.

She finally got electrical transfered this morning so I texted her and said, "Come on over I have your keys to your new apartment."

She was late and I knew she hated bugs..... so while I was there waiting for her I sprayed, put insulation strips in the screens and fixed the door sweeps. She finally comes shuffling in, having her paper showing she transfered electrical (last thing she needed). She looked sad as a bloodhound.

I said "Congratulations on your new apartment! Here's your keys."

She says quietly, "Thanks. Now get the hell out of my house."

Not the flash of a smile or anything, as if she were joking.

WTH

I reminded her about rent due date, told her about some other stuff, and pointed out the things I did and said, "Okay, enjoy your place." She says "You can go out the front door if you want."

Like this is typically the only honeymoon moment with a tenant, so I can't say I saw that coming. I almost said, "We still own the building ma'am", but just let it go. Geez.....

I can't think of any reason why someone with a good income and who pays their bills on time would be doing either of those.

I hope I'm wrong. --70.178.x.xx

You ain't gonna like my take. I read your post 3 times. WHAT does "OLDER BLACK WOMEN" mean? you meant to say older lady?

WHAT DOES "SHUFFLING IN" MEAN?

When she said get the hell out of my house-- maybe it's because she picked up on your VIB. Cause as a 68 yr old white LL guy-- born in NY but living in GA for 40 yrs. I got it in the first few paragraphs of your post.

She didn't smile as if a joke cause she as a tenant is already full of what you were peddling.

Sorry that's my take.

Richard MI -- I see your posts often and think you meant "unappreciative people" in an all inclusive way?

LL's be very cautious in what is creeping into your conversations. You have a business that naturally draws attention-- body language and words!!!!!

What does her skin color have to do with anything? Why does that even get mentioned unless you are actually trying to describe her physically to someone? If you are, "older black woman" is not much of a description.

"Shuffling..." Did you really just say that?

I expected at least someone would take offense by descriptions. Yes, she was a black woman, and she wasn't in her twenties. She was old. She shuffled, because that's exactly what she did- she shuffled. She looked as sad as a bloodhound, because she had that expression. She hung her head and looked sad, possibly grouchy.

I'm not going to be politically correct and not describe any human being in the least terms, just to satisfy someone else's imperious demands for political correctness. Other people have a right to speak, and not always in the way you prefer. Live with it, or direct your eyes elsewhere.

Not looking to offend just observing, but I'll gladly do it if you go first, lol.

But no, I was beyond nice to this individual, and courteous to a fault.

Very bizarre comment and especially at that moment. As I said not a flicker of aggression in it at all, she just kind of mumbled it. And we had no argument or any problems at all. Which made me wonder if it was in jest. Got me.

She's lucky she wasn't my first tenant. There was a time when I would have flown right off the deep end about this.

I've since gotten to the point that there seems to be nothing they might say or do that shocks me. It seems to go with the territory.

A joke or a jerk, if there's one thing I'm sure of.... there will be confirmation on that coming lol.

WMH you called people on your "loser list" swine today. That was a clue to your real attitude toward people/applicants. The attitude that this poster saw is fairly typical. Tolerance between the races is just barely skin deep. Never forget that for your own safety, no matter what race you and myob happen to be. If he had just mentioned "elderly woman" we would not get the full brunt of his account. I shuffle too when I walk in some shoes so that meant nothing racist to me. He went to a great deal of trouble to get this apartment ready for his applicant and got kicked in the butt. Chronically poor and underserved people are not able to wait for things calmly. They want everything right away because in their experience, if they don't get it right away it goes away. Researchers found that disadvantaged kids have difficulty seeing goals that are far away.

We as whites haven't had housing discrimination and if it was from the so called black LL as presented -- we wouldn't recognise it. I've lived in Ga 40 years-- although its less and less-- discrimination is here -- and still felt. Remember I'm a white male over 65 saying this. A LL for 35 yrs. My rental market, to me, has to be NON COLOR. 95% of my applications and renters are African American. You have a good long term job-- your in.

Racism and discrimination: I know it when I see it. Some is blant --some disguised.

Some here, in trying to defend themselves, have tried to turn it around now calling me the racist???

I'm trying to have an honest discussion on how your vib is felt in housing. No blame game just honest words. We also only have what the OP has posted-- lets hear from the applicant. Thats a story I'd like cause there's more here and only one sided. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I am black. When I read the post, I was taken aback by the black description and wondered why it was needed b/c all races have old women in them. Using the word Black seemed to denote something exclusive to that race and the writer wanted the readers to "get it". AllyM pointed it out so clearly by saying, "If he had just mentioned "elderly woman" we would not get the full brunt of his account." What account is that, AllyM? I disagree with shuffling being racist b.c all old people tend to shuffle as they age. Being in the south, I see this description all the time from both white and black. They all seem to lead with the person's race to describe the person before they state what happened. If they don't, the person listening will ask, "Where they white or black?" Even in the news. White Charleston murderer entered into an all black church etc. So, to highlight what MYOB and WMH said, if you use the person's race to highlight a common event, it's racist. Is it plausible that what the poster described could have come from a white, asian, mexican, green, old woman? I have white tenants and try to treat them like people. However, when they throw off bad clues, they are gone. I would have torn up the lease because this PERSON exhibited behaviour I would not tolerate. Racism is real. White privelege is real. The times are changing and I am hopeful. Sign off by a very proud black woman! --47.38.xx.xxx

Furthermore, the poster said she had good income and everything checked out. However, AllyM again said this, "Chronically poor and underserved people are not able to wait for things calmly. They want everything right away because in their experience, if they don't get it right away it goes away. Researchers found that disadvantaged kids have difficulty seeing goals that are far away."

AllyM, do you know something we don't? I didn't get she was poor or underserved from the post. Using the word BLACK allowed her to rain in all the negative stereotypes even when there wasn't any evidence of this. This is what she meant by "full brunt." This is why MYOB, WHM and myself are calling you and the others out. Who's being racist here when by simply using the word black conjures up negative stereotypes? --47.38.xx.xxx

AL wish we could see posts from african american applicants.

We are back to the basic post. Why did this person who was getting her keys turn hateful IN the OP's opinion?

We had a meeting last night with 3 of our managers and none had ever experinced this. We all agreed that during the app process-- that vib-- I hate everyone can be felt-- and those app's whether from black or white are somehow lost. Going to the turn over the keys step-- what the heck happened? We all read the post several times. One manager felt that possible the applicant felt since she was made to wait and wait outside the appartment while app was run -- days and days? OP indicated applicant was eagar to get out from her current situation and possible felt OP was intentionally holding the place up-- knowing her need.

I think “black” should have been left out of the OP description. Had the OP said an older woman instead, the story would be the same. with the exception that we would be focusing on the actions and behavior of the tenant. But because the OP felt that they needed to let us know it was a “black woman’ the other comments seem laced with racism. My earlier comments stand, I think this is the beginning of the OP dealing with a difficult tenant. As to whether that’s due to the tenants attitude, or vibes she picked up from the OP, that I can’t speculate on, only the tenant and OP can answer that. --174.242.xx.xxx

I think of the quote by the Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart on obscenity case (porn I believe). He said something along the lines of "I know it when I see it".

In today's society we feel we must safe guard everyone.

I think we should be very careful to call people out for racism when the intent can not be determined. (as in this case he rented the unit to this woman so it certainly wasn't discriminatory). Witch hunting does not move the important and primary goal of eliminating discrimination in life and housing forward.

With regard to the above quote and phrase William T Goldberg, a Massachusetts lawyer said, "This simple phrase, embedded in a plurality opinion, carries with it many of the conflicts and inconsistencies that continue to plague American obscenity law. In effect, “I know it when I see it” can still be paraphrased and unpacked as: “I know it when I see it, and someone else will know it when they see it, but what they see and what they know may or may not be what I see and what I know, and that’s okay.”

I will agree that the tenant is going to be trouble. I suspect that there was a serious glitch in the screening process. Some clue was missed that she should not have ever been allowed in.

As for the other, I have to admit that I get really tired of the politically correct scolding that goes on online. It's enough to make a very short comment that it looks like racism (if your brain will pop if you let it pass) but it is tiresome to then have to wade through dozens of shrewish posts proclaiming virtue as more and more posters pile on. (I can say "shrewish, right? That is not racism against anyone? Although I do understand it is an insult to animals everywhere, and I rally should not hurt their feelings.)

Racism is ugly but so is self-righteous scolding. Please give it a rest. --98.146.xxx.xxx

AL, NC, you describe yourself as a Black woman. And you are describing me as a racist. I never was and I still am not though I have had some terrible experience with Black folk who hate whites. One incident included a co worker putting her husband's heart medicine in my open coffee cup in my office. On the way home that night I started to pass out but was in a supermarket, not driving, when the medication kicked in. Fortunately that feeling passed and I could drive home. I found out the next day that the co worker wanted to have a Tupper Ware party in the office at lunch time and wanted me to be home sick so she could do that. We were a department in a large company that hosted important business contacts so such things were not allowed. The bigger boss was taking a vacation day and she wanted to get rid of me too. I heard her talking about it down the hall next morning saying "How come she ain't sick etc....". So just what do you think is going to happen nationally to our society to end racism and the hard work you call "white privilege"? I was told by a Black woman who shared an office with me that "When the Revolution comes and White people are sent to Hell" that she was going to lift me up because I was a "good Person". She was a Black Muslim. Fortunately there was no revolution. I wasn't born yesterday. I am 73 and had to go through a lot of crap due to Black attitudes toward me and other white people. We all need to talk about this because it's own there. Watch you back. --173.61.xxx.xx

However, I just can't help but review this again, for those who were offended.

Let me get this straight. I pay for a building, renovate it with my own money.... clean vaccum paint and make it ready for someone. I even put bug guards and insulation in and spray for comfort. Then I give them the keys and say: "Welcome to your new apartment." They reply by saying: "Thanks. Now get the h*ll out of my house."

And you found ME offensive in this situation? I think some people need to have your glasses checked, lol.

I have no idea what this Tenant has going on, but I sure hope it was intended to be a joke. All I know is they moved in and haven't bothered to reply to any communication since.

I mean I confess maybe I shouldn't look for some sense of appreciation beyond money, in working to provide a nice shelter for those who need it. But good lord.....

OH MY GOD, ENOUGH. this was about how a new tenant talked to her new LL. Some felt that because of the “Black woman” comment it may have been from real or perceived racism. Shields, learn from that, whether you meant to be racist or not, learn that you should be careful how you describe people. Not because a bunch of strangers on the internet may think your racist, but because your tenant MAY think your racist. You don’t want that, I’m sure of that much!! It can lead to legal trouble, a disgruntled tenant, more frequent turnovers, etc etc. so learn from the lesson here. As to everything, and everyone else, this is getting way out of hand. Joe you really believe that. Let me put it this way. Shields described the new tenant, the description lead some to believe it was a racist comment, others felt it was harmless. Of the people that felt it was racial there were at least those that are white, and some that were black, then there’s the 1’s who’s race is unknown. Now if that description lead people on here to think it may have been racial, (whether real or perceived), there’s a good chance that the possibility of 1 of Shields tenants may also think that Shields is racist, ( again, real or perceived). You don’t think there’s a lesson there, that 1 needs to, more than ever, be cautious of how they present themselves? I’m only saying that if some strangers on the internet came to the conclusion that Shields could possibly be, or is racist, then so could his/her tenants. That’s 1 thing I know for sure, they don’t want to deal with racial accusations from tenants. So my point of a “lesson to be learned” is, be cautious using race as a description, especially in regards to tenants, it may lead to accusations of racism, real or perceived, and that’s not something any LL wants. --174.242.xx.xx

b_shield(IL),

I reread your post and am trying to put the pieces together.

I am assuming that when you called the tenant to come on over and that you had her keys, that is the same time frame and day when when you did the lease signing.

How did you know she hated bugs? Where there bugs in the apartment when she looked at it? What kind of bugs? Why were they there when you were going to show the apartment? What are you going to do when they come back?

You said she has been parked out in front of apartment for days waiting for the application to be run through. Why was she then late to get keys?

Why not just require her to bring proof of utilities being turned on in her name at lease signing?

She may just have a sense of dry humor or just doesn't like people in general. Either way of coarse that is not the thing to say. She is right though in that legally it is now her home.

These are just a few red flags for as to why I would not have rented to her:

1)She is sitting outside of apartment for days.

2)She is obviously having issues with her current place of residence. Why? Did you really check it out?

3)She is way to urgent. No different then someone saying "I can move in today! I have cash!". Did she say anything along these lines?

4)She already is talking about bugs before moving in. Why?

5)She is living with her family? Why? Does she have any other LL references? Did you check them? Really well? Why is she having trouble living with them? Or, are you just perceiving she is?

Unfortunately, I think you will have trouble with her but, maybe not. Actually, you already are. You said later " All I know is they moved in and haven't bothered to reply to any communication since." What are you trying to communicate to her now, so soon? Who are THEY? Is this the license exempt home provider you posted about before? In your original post here you just mentioned one person?

You really need to keep on top of this but I am sure you will. I hope it works out but, evict if needed. --73.120.xx.xxx
