I tried restarting and that didn't work so I turned off the power switch on the back of the computer and let it sit a minute and then turned it back on. I then turned the computer on and when it got to the boot page I held down F5 until the safe mode option popped up. It started in safe mode but was asking for the password. I thought I was still in trouble but oddly enough it accepted it. Go figure? I went to recovery and recovered . Now I am up and running and am going to the computer. Thank you all very much. 6x6, glad you're computer is back. But, do use this as a motivator to plan your next action.

As others have said, make sure your data is backed up. Preferably to somewhere physically not where your computer is. Like a cloud-based service such as Google Drive and plenty of others.

Windows 7 was a very good operating system, but it is many years old with very limited support from Microsoft. It also indicates that your PC is *old*. Time to get a new one.

If you don't run "special" programs on your computer, consider the advice Rob [MA] gave you: Look into a Chromebook. You can run anything that is web-based. There are free word processing, spreadsheet, etc. web services out there that will do everything Microsoft Office will do. And you will stay automatically backed up.

I am an IT professional by trade. My home computer is a Chromebook. --68.156.xx.xx

Thank you all for your time and suggestions. I will have to see if I can get my wife to help me get things saved to a disk for now. That is actually another problem with this computer is the part that you put the disk in has something going on with it to where the computer does not recognize it and I can pull the side off of the computer and unplug it and plug it back in and then it works until the computer is shut down, or at least that is the way it has been in the past. We hardly ever need it so it hasn't been a big deal.

Pat, I am not very knowledgeable about computers and get a little worried about me messing something up but I love this windows7 pro. Every time there is an update from microsoft or the internet server the computer has issues for a little bit but if I do a scan then things usually are fine after that. I think the problem is not necessarily the age of the computer itself as much as it is that it becomes incompatible with newer software and internet servers. I noticed my outdated model phone is the same way. For this reason I do not like any tech. That and I still need to learn how to use it.

myob, Is there anything you can not fix? LOL. Air craft to computers!

Rob and Steve, are those cloud back up systems safe from ID theft. I would be concerned about hackers or something. I am assuming you can access it from any device since it is web based? Is a Chromebook the same as a laptop?

All that being said, I do have a laptop I bought about a year ago that was on sale for around $200. It is a Dell and has Windows10. I don't deal with it very often because it confuses my little brain right now,LOL. Windows7 I am just getting used to so I like using my desktop computer. I will need to figure out how I can transfer my work over. I like this laptop because it has a place for a disk and I noticed a lot of the new laptops do not have that so any disk I have with programs or anything on them I would not be able to use. This is probably why it was on sell because it is an outdated model. In the end I need to find the time to learn Windows10(who knows I might end up liking it)and a laptop. --73.120.xx.xxx

It's a regular computer but has (Steve jump in here anytime) a limited amount of storage. More than enough for a Landlord business especially if you use cloud based storage such as Google Drive, which is free.

Think of it as your file cabinet. Leases, ins, photos everything.

It's like putting your money in the bank instead of your mattress. Then someone breaks in, fire, lost, break, airport loses it whatever your computer and your life is not over. Just go to Best Buy and grab one off the shelf and resume business.

Money stays in the bank.

Files, docs, accounting ect stays at the company holding (Google) it. Cloud based is a term for it. --99.203.xx.xxx

Rob did a good job explaining a Chromebook.

As far as identity theft issues … Everything, and I mean everything, that is in any way connected to the internet is at some risk of security breach.

The major cloud-based (web-based) backup services are probably much more secure than any data residing on your PC/MAC/etc. One thing that helps make cloud-based back ups secure is using a complex password. Not 123password or, since you live in Knoxville, GoVols1 or stuff like that. Also, systems that use 2-factor authentication are way more secure than just a password. --68.156.xx.xx

6x6 - Support ends for Window 7 in January. So get yourself acquainted with that Windows 10 laptop and start transferring files. There's no point to trying to install Windows 10 on that older hardware, it's very doubtful that it could handle the file sizes nowadays.

Support ending means that you will soon find that programs like Adobe and browsers like Firefox and Chrome, and anti-virus programs like McAfee will all stop updating for Windows 7 very soon. You have a very nice dinosaur, unfortunately.

Start that switchover today, or as soon as you possibly can, before you being to have more glitches. (Take it from someone who had to switch over from Windows Vista last year!) --151.197.xxx.xxx

Thank Wilma I am trying to find information online for how to use Windows 10. I played around a little on my laptop today to try and get familiar with it. The good thing about my desktop computer is that it is custom built and I had it built with 6gb of ram and 1tb of memory all of which I have barely used up so I should be able to make it work with Windows 10. I paid about $1200 several years ago to have it built. I also have virtual windows xp on it but I never use it.

Note that, if you want to, you can very likely still upgrade that Win7 Pro desktop to Win10 Pro for free. Technically, the "free" upgrade program ended a while ago, but MS didn't actually stop it from still working.

6GB of RAM is a little light, sure, 8GB would be preferable as a minimum -- but it'll likely run just fine.

Thank you Robert J and John, I just Googled the requirements for Windows 10

Microsoft lists the Windows 10 minimum hardware requirements as:

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC.

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit.

Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS.

Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.

Display: 800x600.

I have a 64-bit system, 6 GB of RAM, and 1 TERA bite of hard drive. Looks like I have processor of 2.80GHz but I do not know what my graphics card is. I am trying to remember but when microsoft sent an update message to the computer(about a year ago)that I could change over to Windows 10 ,I think it said this computer was capable.

However when I had this computer built they never gave me the disk to load Windows 7 and so I don't know that I want to loose Windows 7. --73.120.xx.xxx
