Now that I have a towing package, I plan to rent a lift to paint a 35 foot high stucco wall and fix some gutters/trims (3 story high) in different buildings

I have some relatively narrow driveways.. Is there any recommended ones? The 35 foot one in home depot rental can be towed, seems pretty bulky.. thanks! --68.227.xxx.xxx

How level is the area around the building that you want to use a lift?

Will you be setting up on concrete, hot top or dirt?

Are there any power lines, trees or other obstructions

where you plan to use it?

Do you plan to just go vertical or will you need to reach out & away from where the lift is set up?

Do you want to be able to move the basket / platform while you are up in the basket?

Are the buildings close enough that you could just drive the machine from 1 building to the next or will you have to tow the lift?

Some of the platform style lifts (flat platform that only go vertical) can only be used on level areas. If you have the right space this type is perfect especially fro someone who hasn't use a lift before.

You said 35' high wall, did you actually measure it?

I'd bet that to be useful you will need at least a 45' boom lift to get to that height. Try looking at what they carry in local the rental places as well as HD. Make sure you measure how big the base is especially if there are any outriggers.

Carefully consider the groung clearance of the lift as well as the pitch of the ground. They are heavy and can get tippy when fully extended --174.225.xxx.xx

I owned a 40 foot lift years ago,not the kind you rent from Home Depot and tow behind a truck but the one that weighted 10 ton and needed to rent a truck with a low boy to move,it was real nice and only 8 feet wide, the tow behing kind have outriggers and needed 11 feet of clearance,i bought the one I did because I didn't have 11 feet between buildings in a lot of cases so beaware of that. The tow behing ones feel a little sketchy when fully extended especially if there is any wind --72.231.xxx.xxx

Most grounds are flat, either concrete or asphalt, no slopes. There is powerline attached to each building. (Is there any danger if you get too close to the line, ie in couple feet).. I like boom cos it has the ability to extend vs. the straight updown type.

Idealy I would like to be able to control the buckets from up there when painting..

I was looking at the one with outriggers also the scissor lift. Most places have 11 feet clearance to setup the boom

I watched a mechanic get killed by a sizzor lift that tipped over. A fellow mechanic. outrigger folded and platform feel over. He held on as long as he could. --99.103.xxx.xxx

That old 10 foot rule became 12 ft in 2002, if you can remove the power and power line you should be ok on level ground but I would think 2 ladders and scaffolding would be an easier way. --76.188.xxx.xx

Around here whenever we're setting up staging or working near power lines we just contact the power company & they put protective covers on the lines. --96.237.xx.xx

Now I am concerned.. Is it because of the 240V high current power line to the house? I will have to google and learn more about it.. thanks for the info. --68.227.xxx.xxx

HD will require you to own or buy a Harness - count on extra $$$$$$ for that

I used HD lift in late fall and would not start on cold mornings

recently had a real 70' Ariel lift delivered and drove onto lawn and it sunk in and got stuck - had to tow it out

Call your power company and they will come install a protective shroud over power line for your safety but touching line will not kill you but pulling it down could --24.62.xxx.xxx

Elliot,

Go to the rental place and ask for a ride up. They are not as secure as one might think. Takes real skill and courage. Looks easy but totally different when you are up there swaying.

Hire it.

I’ve rented the outrigger type that you tow behind a truck to paint before. Maybe it’s me, but it’s not that bad, yeah they sway around a little when they are extended but it’s not bad. I found the platform handy for having everything I needed right there, I could move around on the platform, I had my paint, roller, radio, and brush all right there with me. NGrid sleeved my power line near the weather head. They have alarms that sound if it’s even remotely close to a point that it may tip so as long as you set it up correctly, aren’t stupid about setting it up and use it safely they are fine. Yes people have fallen off of them and been hurt or killed, but same with ladders. 99 percent of the time it’s because they we’re using it beyond it’s limits or in an unsafe manner. --71.248.xxx.xxx
