I just installed a tow package to my tacoma.. The wiring part is puzzling to me.. some comes with 4 pins, some 7 pins. I am thinking of renting boom or flat bed type of usage.. nothing permanent..

What would you recommend if you know what you are doing with towing? thx --68.227.xxx.xxx

Most trailers use a four pin set up where can see wiring diagram on You tube on how to connect wiring harness. A special isolation trailer device is required as this will cause problem as when more bulbs are on the system then load on the electrical will change as more bulbs are used for turn signals and brake lights. It is possible to install a 7 pin which is mainly used on larger trailers to activate trailer brakes. My new Tacoma has a 4 and 7 pin factory installed where the load sensor included.

On a Tacoma a 4 pin will do. You should not be towing the larger stuff with electric brakes that uses the 7 pin. --69.80.xx.xxx

Not sure about RI but many states have laws governing trailer brakes. If you want to do it right, put in a Tekonsha trailer brake controller and 7 pin harness. You can get an adapter to go from 7 pin to 4 pin if needed. I would have it professionally done. --173.15.xx.xxx

I looked it up. Every trailer with a gross weight over 4000 lbs needs trailer brakes. Will you be towing anything that heavy? --173.15.xx.xxx

As others have said the 7 pin allows for electric brakes but you will also have to purchase a brake controller to go with it to control the resistance on the brakes. The up side is that you can get a small converter that plugs into the 7 pin and gives you a 4 pin to plug the trailer into.

Before you go with the 7 pin I would lookup the towing capacity of your vehicle to see if it is even rated to tow larger trailers. --50.26.xx.xxx

Apart from the wiring, don't forget to make sure your hitch is installed/secured properly so that it doesn't come off at the exact wrong moment. :)

We had ours professionally installed, but didn't use it, because it was our pre-RE days. Then one weekend, we agreed to keep a box trailer full of stuff that belonged to a club we were active in. We went up the steep hill, and we were halfway up the hill, and suddenly we didn't have a trailer attached to us anymore! (Random fun detail-- it was at Richard Garriott's Lake Austin Ranch! Eep! Fortunately, it wasn't in line with any of the structures! And no one was driving behind us, either!) The trailer hitch had pulled off, the bumper had pulled off, the trailer was back at the bottom of the hill, and it was awful. :) We threw the hitch and the bumper into the back of the truck, and some friends took the box trailer to their place until we could get things sorted out. When we brought the stuff in for repair, the people asked, "Woah, who installed this?" And DH was like, "You guys did." And they said, "Oh" in a very small voice. :)

And we haven't had any problems since. :) --96.46.xxx.xx

If it were mine I would put the 7-pin on and have adapters to the 4-pin and 6-pin in the glovebox. You never know what kind of trailer you will borrow, rent, or buy in the future that will have a 7-pin connector even if it doesn't have brakes. --70.178.x.xx

Do both the 7 and 4 pin set up. You will lose the adaptors... it is just easier. Spend the time and $$ now. --76.77.xxx.xxx

I googled and couldn't figure out.. You explained concisely in couple sentence and I have got the idea.

I haven't towed anything in last 10 years that I owned the truck. Just installed a new factory tow package cos I got a brand new frame through recall and I have nothing better to do other than fixing the house. I will go 4 pin to tow occasionally.. thanks for all the great answers.

I am going to start a thread on aerial lift.. :) --68.227.xxx.xxx
