My latest turnover was a surprise for me. Roaches. A lot of them. We have vacuumed & scrubbed the floors with Pine-Sol, but there is still a peculiar odor in unit. It is vinyl throughout. We have put down Combat Gel and also a clear gel that Hot Shot makes. It is beginning to work because I saw a "sick" one tonight. We only have a week or two before the new tenant moves in so I am on a tight timeline. Praying they will be under control by then. This unit is in the woods, but we've NEVER had a problem like this here before. She must have brought them with her.
There were dead ones, mashed to the walls in several places. It is Yuck to the inth degree. Mouse droppings too so Decon in place under cabinets, under drawers where nothing large can get to it.
This lady looked clean, the place was not left spotless, but I've seen them much worse dirt wise. Tenant was in place about 11 months. --71.51.xxx.xxx |

That smell that roaches give off is meant to attract more roaches! It indicates where there’s food and mates. Here’s the worst part....They will eat their own dead in order to survive. That’s one reason why they’re so hard to get rid of. --50.107.xxx.xxx |

Ha my 7 year old got a weird facts about animals book today from the library and there was a chapter in there about roaches.
Fun facts are:
When they die they let off a methane gas for up to 18 hours.
The fart every 15 mins.
Can live up to 9 hours without their heads.
Good times. Per author not me*

I didn't know about the smell thing, although I did have an infestation a handful of years ago. You're on the right track with Combat. Holy effective! I did a taste test when I had my issue and had discovered the motherload(nest?) at the base of a neighbor's tree adjacent to my rental. I went out every night for 4 nights, laying Combat baits along with competitor crap brand, tearing off the tops so I could watch. Night One- Feeding frenzy! (100s?), Night 2- 1/2 a frenzy. Night 3- a couple drunkard looking roaches stumbling around. Night 4- Zilch(alive that is). Carcasses scattered. Unreal. Other noticings. Roaches didnt scattered with my bright beam of light (headlamp) glaring at them as I hovered observing nights 1-3. Also, no roaches at all on the competitor brand. So if you have 1-2 weeks Pat, there is total potential for having it under control unless the entire woods is covered in them. Use it generously and particularly if you can find some of their routes/nests. Headlamp at night works great. Far more out. As far as smell, anytime I have smell issues I open every window and door and air things out as much as possible everyday. You can also spray bleach water (although I'm not a fan of bleach, it can kill stuff that is decaying). Good luck! --172.58.xx.xxx |

Take off the switch plates and light shades n covers and puff diaetemacious earth in the crevices. Keep cabinets open n remove the drawers and wash everything. Caulk every gap you can wall to cabinet, baseboards, etc --99.203.xx.xxx |

I think a pro might be the way to go because of the tight timeline. Combat gel works good, but it's over the counter. You need some pro strength spray too. --68.102.xxx.xx |

With the timeline you need to know what today you are guessing at, it takes 3 treatments 10 days apart or more to knock them out, first you get the adults nuetered and sickened to die, then you retreat in 10 days when the existing eggs hatch - same effect nueuter those that can drop eggs again and sicken those that go out on the trim strips, and now you hopefully have just eggs hatching in 7-10 days, so there is treatment 3, if you miss something or use bleach you wil be going in for a couple more rodeos because the tear gas makes them jusr crawl deeper and drop eggs like crazy causing you more time to kill, then you can clean up the remnants and the smell. --76.188.xxx.xx |

Pat,
Combat gel works best when fresh so put out some everyday. Only need dots or 1" strips, but put them everywhere. Once dried it's not as tempting.
We use a commercial grade from DoMyOwn.com - MAXFORCE - it's exactly what my pro uses.
And do a perimeter spray OUTSIDE along the foundation - 3 feet out on the dirt/lawn, and 3 feet up on the siding.
The first time I called a pro I stood outside talking to the neighbor during the spraying. We both stood there aghast, watching an ARMY of roaches flee my rental (stirred by the sprayer), crawl thru the grass, and across HIS driveway to HIS foundation.
He never spoke to me again.
Smell: much of the smell is their poo - those itty bitty dots - behind paneling and in outlet boxes.

PS
Does this (finally) convince you (and others) to do a 2 Minute In Home Visit prior to final approval before signing the lease?
Would have saved you from this trouble.

Like, I said, an elderly lady, looked clean, no pets, not a bunch of kids/grandkids, so even if I had gone in, I doubt seriously if I had seen enough to warrant suspicion of true status. Both elements on range burned out in 11 months, a 1st for that too, she never told me. Lucky we happen to keep a few and I had a large one we had bought new and it was the block (at a different unit) so I didn't use it until now.
I AM going on a daily basis now as I clean a few windows, wipe down more surfaces and renewing both kinds of gel and put the small combat black individual traps of poison to attract & kill as many types as possible. Hot Shot clear gel has Dinotefuran, Combat Bait has Hydramethylnon and Combat Gel has Fipronil. --71.51.xxx.xxx |

Pat, I am not a professional pest control person...so take my advice for what it is worth.
Sometimes one poison can be the antidote to another. I personally would consider just using one type. Me, I would go with fipronil. It prevents the roaches front forming a hard shell. They will die and the roaches in hiding will eat them, ingesting the poison as well. They also will not be able to form the hard shell on their eggs...those die too. --68.107.xxx.x |

BTW for what it's worth, when I did my intervention and taste test, I opened the Combat motel things up, but I used the gel and spread it all on top. So based on what's being said here, that's the fipronil. I also put small blobs on old greasy drips and placed those out where I had seen the droves
of roaches. --172.58.xx.xxx |
