I was in an apt freshening it up for a turnover (will deduct for cleaning) and had a frustrating experience with a light sconce.
It is the type where the ceramic ring screws down inside the shade before you put the light bulb in. What a P I T @. It is so difficult to screw that ring on n off by hand and there isn't any slot to stick something in to maneuver it either. What a poor design. Why did they move away from the shades w/ set screws, and change the shade profile so the old ones and new ones are not interchangeable?
I thought plumbing for sinks was headed in a good direction w basin and sink faucet nuts. Recently got a new bath faucet fixture and it came w/ a little metal plate and a tiny nut. Very hard to reach up and screw that tight. and let's say you have a new install and you flip it over and install it before you set the sink. You still have to try n get it out in the future.
caulking guns where the poker is at the handle is another one. I won't touch those, and caulk guns in general are poorly made.
What do you work with that is not well thought out, OR what is something you use that is worth extra and saves time? --24.194.xx.xx |

Isn't there some sort of tube-shaped tool to twist it? --107.77.xxx.xxx |

You are right about the light fixtures.... I believe they changed the design because the little screws type fixtures holding the globes don’t look as good and I bet thousands of people lost those tiny screws, not to mention they would rust in the light fixture body. On tools I like: I do like the relatively easy to use push button channel locks. --76.242.xx.xxx |

Trying to get the bulb into place without putting the oils from your skin on the bulb is another issue. --47.156.xx.xx |

Too often looks take priority over how things work. I believe in function first, then figure out the form.
Although in this case, those ceramic rings are better at tightening the shade, keeping it straight and holding it in. Those little screws can be frustrating, and trying to get three of them in evenly. I have also tightened too much and broke the glass shade. Now I have smaller hands to it isn't as hard for to do most of the time. I hate the ones you have to take the shade off before you can get the lightbulb out!

The last one I bought like that there were indention's on one side of the ring and they provided a round tool that slipped over it to turn it. Maybe have the rings upside down?
As to your question, my pet peeve is air bubbles in caulk tubes. Never fails, I have a nice bead going and poof it blows up in my face. It can't be that hard to load a tube of caulk without air bubbles but I've tried several brands and they all seem to do it.
Poor design: the latch plate on doors. We have wide swings in humidity and other environmental factors. I have doors that I have moved the plate up during the humid season and down in the winter when it is bone dry to get them to latch right. I've finally resorted to filing the latch hole a little larger to keep from adjusting them from season to season. Why is the latch plate hole almost exactly the same size as the latch, there's plenty of extra room to give it some up/down play. --50.26.xx.xxx |

100% agree on stupid design - I hope I never have to replace because I will throw it out
In a perfect world they go out of business and a new better product replaces it
One would also hope that a contact at the company wold heed your advice and send you a prototype improvement they are working to fix the problem

Uurrgghhh we just had this experience with light fixture. Took the whole thing down off the wall was easier than fighting it over the vanity!
Caulk guns. About 5 years ago i bought a new expensive one... that's it! Solved most usable issues. So i just don't even look at the cheap ones anymore. It's worth the money.

Adele, if you are referring to the rapid wrench that looks promising. Might be good at tightening those poorly designed sink stopper rod nuts that are way up under the sink. The rigid ez change faucet tool is a good one too.
Mike,
if there is a tool to spin the ring HD has never tried to sell me one and it is not included in their entry level products.
Linda, yes those light fixtures are dumb too!
Plenty, did you put it back up?
The other frustrating thing related to poor design is that the products keep changing, so if you need to replace something that matches the old, you can't find it. That happened to me w/ countertop finish, light fixtures and it's why I'm reluctant to install Allure because it seems like it will be discontinued. At least at BM you can make up any paint color they ever made. Not so w/ glidden and Behr n valspar have not been around ling enough to know. W/ Behr the color of white does not match between the ultra PP and the premium plus (or what ever they are, that's confusing too!).

You make your own from a foot of 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 drain pipe scrap, use vaseline on the bulb so it does not get jammed in there. --76.188.xxx.xx |
