Hello everyone,

Im tired of carpet for flooring. Ive used Allure but after 3 years I see seperations at the seams. What other options work best for rentals? Tile is ok for baths and kitchens but for my other rooms is what Im looking for. It needs to be something that can be repaired or patched when some damage is done. After all we don;t want to replace a whole floor when only a small stain needs to be fixed. Thanks for all your help....... --99.102.xx.xxx

I started converting to Allure in 2011. At this point, all but a couple of places have nothing but Allure Grip Strip, those few places still have old hardwood from 69+ years ago.

The Allure wears well, so long as installation is done correctly. This includes rolling it as in the instructions. Also, keeping the temperature moderate without wild swings.

I’m looking at the Cali-Bamboo LVP for when Home Depot decides to stop selling the Allure. --64.251.xxx.xxx

Even with some seem separation, I think Allure glue strip remains a solid choice. However, if you prefer, there's a nice glue down vinyl plank at Lowes for about $0.99 sq ft.

I use additional adhesive to get a solid stick: TEC Skill Set Indoor Primer. So far, so good!

I've had ZERO luck using any of the peal-and-stick flooring products. I found them to pull apart at the seems. So I only now use the click systems that the flooring snaps together.

In a partnership apartment complex my partners wouldn't listen. They used a high end peal-and-stick flooring and within 1 year it had to be replaced. I used the click together flooring and it's going on 20 years without a hitch. --47.156.xx.xx

Robert J, Allure isn't Peel & Stick. It's a floating floor where the boards stick to each other, not the floor below.

Removing a damaged board is easy with a hair dryer or heat gun.

Installing is three times as fast as click-together.

If you use a good variegated color pattern, slight imperfections are hidden very well.

BUT the key to a decent install is the first "Triangle of Truth" as my husband puts it: get that first row, 3/4 of the second and 1/2 of the third row down properly and carefully. The rest of the runs will go together with NO effort. Screw up that first bit, and you will fight every seam for the rest of the job. Recently did a 12 x 20 sunroom in 90 minutes - and 30 of that was those first few rows. --50.82.xxx.xx

I have to stick with carpet that is olefin not polyester or nylon. It has a tight weave and Berber is very cleanable though it does get pulls in it. It is generally commercial carpet and not as thick so the tenant can put area rugs over it for decorating. It steam cleans easily. Then I use a good quality self stick tile and glue it also in wet areas. I have had long use from all of these. If the carpet goes bad due to tenant issues I can get new carpet in there in a week and start getting money in rents. --173.61.xxx.xx

Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks??

Over the weekend I installed my first Allure from HD. I did a kitchen (almost 100sf) and it took me 4 hrs, including the trip to HD.

Cutting uses a lot of time. Painting the baseboards and installing them is also time consuming, not included in the 4 hrs.

My impression: Good product. I want to see how it holds in 2-3 years. --99.59.x.xxx

Best flooring?

Dirt, followed by concrete, with a drain in the middle.

Oh sorry, too long around class D rentals... ;)

I've been spending a lot of time traveling and staying in hotels. If I wasn't using tile (real, not sticky) I think in the future I'm going to get that low nap hotel carpet. Wears great, looks great, no pad needed don't know how cheap, but I like it. --47.216.xx.xxx

Fred/CA, you will get even faster with practice! We can do a 12 x 20 room in 1.5 hours. And we are old. Does not include baseboards, that can double the time. Or the trip to Home Depot ;)

Get an undercut tool for the woodwork (doorways and such) and stock up on sharp blades for your utility knife and change them often. --50.82.xxx.xx
