I know there are several different types of PEX installation and I'm not sure yet which one I would use, so it's kind of hard to frame this question, but...

For a house with say, 2 full bathrooms, about 1400 square feet, how much (roughly) would the tools + materials cost for a DIYer?

I'm trying to figure out how much I would actually save if I attempted this myself. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by several different types of pex installations.

The crimping tool of $65. Pex cutter $15,

Roll of blue and red pex 100' $30 each.

Lug L, 5 per bathroom, 2 in kitchen. $8 each.

Crimps, $5 for 10.

Elbows, T's, 90's, maybe $20.

Random other fittings maybe $50??

Don't overthink this pex stuff. There's nothing to it.

If the house you are about to plumb was gutted, I could do that in 2 hours, no question.

Add an hour if you have a manifold. --50.107.xxx.xx

I will make a guess. Since it has been awhile for me. And the new brass no lead fittings are more expensive.

Without tools I would say 300.00 to 400.00 with any wood, valves, etc....

Plan on a full day first time. And since you are removing the old pipes. And will need to cut out and finish areas under the sinks etc...

I just use the white pipe. I just think it looks better. And just need a roll of 3/4 and one of 1/2 --73.152.xx.xxx

OK thank you both. I'll watch some video tutorials online to learn more about it.

My plan is try it first on my personal residence, and pull a permit, to make sure I've done it correctly, and then do it on the rentals that need it as those tenants vacate. --72.188.xxx.xxx

Why do you think that pulling a permit is going to make sure you do it "correctly". I know inspectors that won't take the latest and greatest tech, give wrong advice, change their mind on what is needed, and not look at everything they should be looking at. Last person I trust to make sure something is done correctly is the government inspector. --108.4.xxx.xx

It will cost around $400 to $500 for a Milwaukee pex expansion tool where the end is put on pex then the expansion tool expands pex pipe then fitting is inserted into the pex pipe. Hand tools cost less available on Ebay or Amazon but very difficult to work with. A type pex is the easiest to install. If the bathroom, kitchen are close together then a 3/4' pipe pex connected up to manifold to branch off to 1/2" fittings. Pex pipe is sold in 20' lengths or a roll which can 100 meters or 300'. The crimp type of pex is more labour intensive along the crimps require the tension. View some videos on You Tube on how to install pex piping where A and B type will be discussed. --147.194.xxx.xx

Consider contacting Uponor by email or phone for a layout on how to configure pex. The Uponor website also has how to videos about pex and how to use special tool. While the Milwaukee special tool is around $400 to $500 it makes working with pex a fast install. Unlike other piping pex is not going to require a lot a fittings. One 3/4" from main shut off and hot water tank then a few special fittings to go from 3/4" to 1/2". Some installations Blue and Red pex is used where white can be used for main 3/4" line. Blue and Red 1/2" can be bought in 20' lengths. Blue and Red is mainly used to distinguish from hot and cold pipes. Milwaukee special tool can be bought on Ebay or Amazon. You can download a household system about pex by Uponor which shows the varies fittings, special tool which is only the expansion tool required. Most houses have 3/4" from main shut off and hot water tank then goes down to 1/2". A hand expansion tool is half the cost of the electric expansion tool but it is much difficult to work with as once the pex is expanded then the fitting must be put right away as pex contracts. Ebay and Amazon also sell the hand expansion as well. With pex all the fittings must come from the same manufacturer. Uponor will also have a listing on where pex is sold as Uponor is not sold at any big box store where there a quite a few plumbing supply outlets that carry Uponor products. Commercial buildings will mainly use A type pex. --147.194.xxx.xx

You Prolly don't want to go the upanor way w expanding the pipe w the tool and plastic rings since the tool is expensive and the parts don't match box store parts. Ace might have both types of fittings by you. Look them so you know not to accidentally use the wrong one. Buy rolls of pipe and use straight lengths where it will show and you care what it looks like. Go with the oteker metal crimp rings. --99.203.xx.xxx

I permit you all to do supply lines, drains might be nice to permit if you are modifying the existing flow - adding items past 5ft lateral you need a breather to get the air in behind the water but that has nothing to do with PEX, uponor is the expanding version - zurn and several clones are the crimp design, online you can generally save 30-50 percent from shelf prices. --76.188.xxx.xx

PEX is awesome. I replumbed my cabin to learn how to use it. I bought the Sharkbite brand tools and it's pretty foolproof. Only challenge is crimping in tight spaces can be difficult due to how wide you have to open the tool to put it over the pipe and crimp ring. There is a power tool which would make this a non issue, but for how little time I spend doing this type of work it's not worth the investment.

My plumber redid one of my 1000 square foot ranches with pex in less than a day. I now think I could do it almost as fast as he did. --67.53.xxx.xxx
