Tenant moved out, no notice. Left a vehicle in my parking lot w/flat tire. She won’t respond to my texts, towing co’s won’t tow, police said they could tag it and wait 30 days to have it towed then send me the bill. (and he wasn’t positive this was how it'd work). It can’t “slide” into the street. It’s in a graveled parking area.No control over steering wheel even if I got it out of park) I read someone say they jacked one up and put it on casters. I’m not sure the casters would push in a gravel lot.(not thick gravel)(anyone know?). I’m sending a notice via mail hoping to get a forwarding address, I’ve told her I’ll be charging storage fees ($50/day is what impound lots chg on average) I feel I’m going to be taking her to court (more costs and more trouble). I can’t think of anything else to do. Have this happen to you and how'd you get rid of it? legally or questionably legal?

If you move the car into the street and it gets damaged or stolen, you can be held liable. Instead you should have had posted signs on the property, City approved, that allows for towing. They you could have called your private towing service and had the car towed to their lot. If the owner doesn't respond to the towing services, the car will be auctioned off and you will owe noting for the removal, storage, etc. --47.156.xx.xx

You should be able to find someone to impound it. Keep calling. I've had good luck with salvage yards. Some of them will impound for you. --107.77.xxx.xx

This is why -- under no circumstances" can tenants park or allow to be parked - untagged or inoperable cars on property's. They are given 10 days to sure 20 days til eviction. During eviction sheriff has car towed as part of set out -- that removes all tenants belongings to right of way.

( if you allow car to stay on the property while tenant makes arrangements to move it-- you have not evicted them-- so don't let them talk you into that. OFF the property.) --99.103.xxx.xxx

It's in my lease, and tenant initials this clause, that if a car becomes inoperable or uninsured or doesn't have current tags, I can have it towed - and Tenant specifically grants me the right to do this. Some towing companies will do it for free, some will charge me for the tow but the Tenant (owner of the car) for the impound. --50.82.xxx.xx

Hi Lucy...My first call would be to the Police Department and ask them your options on having it removed.

In Virginia, a property owner can call any towing company and have any vehicle removed from his premises for any reason.

Once the tow truck picks up the car, his first call is to the local Police Dept telling them the Veh Id Number, and where it is. Iff the owner calls the police, they tell him what tow lot has it and it was removed at property owners request.

The tow lot has three days to to process the vehicle. The process consists of notifying the owner by registered mail where it is at, and also notifying any lienholder. If it is not picked up within 30 days, it is either auctioned off or sold for scrap.

These are Virginia procedures, I'm not sure bout Indiana. --70.184.xxx.xx

In KS, it's very similar to what Patrick just described. Tow company comes and takes it away for free after doing check for stolen, etc. They make their money from the car owner. If the owner never comes to claim it, they will sell it as abandoned. --68.102.xxx.xx

I've never had to do this in Indiana, but I have in Michigan. State cop told me to text ex-tenant a specific date and time that I would be at the property to oversee ex-tenants removal of the vehicle. If not removed at that time, it will be towed. Important to state "ex-tenant is not allowed on the premises at any time other than this specific date and time". I packed every cubic inch of that car's trunk and interior with ex-tenants trash. --107.141.xx.xxx

Thanks Patrick, I am dealing with this now, a woman I rented to, allowed her son to park 2 non-running vehicles at our rental. I should have demanded they remove them a long time ago, besides being unsightly, they are still there after Mom has gone with the son begging for more time to remove. SMH --71.51.xxx.xxx

I would ask at housing court after observing a months cases unless you hear how a landlord did it, here it is part of the court ordered move-out paperwork from the sheriff office to recover your property they give a list of about 8 tow-for-scrap companies, worst case is file eviction so you can recover the unused contract rent and get the list with legal removal. --76.188.xxx.xx
