Have a working fridge with sparkling clean inside but the sides on the outside have little rust spots everywhere. Last turn I tried to hang a magnet board but it has a dent or two keeping that from working. The person renting it didn’t care. Whatever I do will be done inside the apartment so I think spray cans are not ideal. I saw rustoleum has an appliance epoxy paint and it mentioned using a foam roller. Has anyone done this with decent results?

Just open windows and use a spray can. I spray paint in apartments often when vacant. --50.107.xxx.xx

I use white appliance paint form h-depot. Its epoxy paint. so here's the warning: lightly sand the side-- whole thing not just rust. Buy tack rags and wipe down after sanding. tpae area you don't want painted and lay tarp on floors and countertops--SPRAY EPOXY-- IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU. Wear a mask and put on long sleeve shirt and hat. Epoxy is very sticky and doesn't dry quickly like most paints. When spraying just put a light (dusting) coat and let it stay tacky. When about 5 to 7 minutes pass do your last coat-- top to bottom and heavier.

We use this on vent hoods, bath tubs and HVAC vents. --99.103.xxx.xxx

To really get a top notch job done on appliance painting, I have to follow these steps.

1) Take the appliance outside and clean the surface to remove any dirt, grime or grease.

2) Fill any dents with a epoxy 2 part filler. Let dry and sand.

3) Clean the surface again.

4) Allow the sun to heat up the appliance surface. The hotter the surface the quicker the paint will dry and the better the results.

I use the roll on epoxy paint, mixing the contents first.

If the refrigerator or appliance is heavy, when hot from the sun, I will bring it back into the unit and then paint there. --47.156.xx.xx

I used rustoleum, the old fashioned kind, with a clean expensive brush so it won't lose hairs. Just put a light coat on the whole side that has the rust spots. It will look like new. Generally the problem side is up against the cabinet and gets dirty a lot and cleaned a lot. Don't try to change the color. --173.61.xxx.xx

The spray paint works decent. If inside, you can tape off areas with newspaper so overspray shouldn't be an issue. --68.102.xxx.xx

When you wear down a sanding block use it on the metal - less abrasive and you would have thrown it away anyhow, then spray a light coat, go out to put the reflective house numbers on and you are ready for another coat. --76.188.xxx.xx

Appliance paint in the quart can, Rustoleum calls it appliance epoxy. After cleaning well, and light sanding and tack rag, tape off the areas you don't want to paint. I roll it on. It does smell, but works better than spray for me and less overspray and air quality issues. I can keep the appliance inside. I don't change the color and it will work on the more matte / orange peel surface as well. My paint jobs have held up well for years.

If you have an A or a B level rental, the above is good advice. (however, A rentals likely have newer units).

If it's a C rental, sell the unit to the tenant for $50 or whatever it's worth and let them deal with it.

Now I understand that in some areas, refrigerators and stoves and even dishwashers are expected.

My opinion is not in C level rentals.

The tenants in C level rentals will sell the refrigerator and stove, then tell you that they broke and that they did you a favor by getting rid of them. Oh, by the way, where's my new one they then ask, plus of course, the $500 in meat that went bad when the unit failed. --172.222.xx.x

Thanks. Good to hear it works. Turning unit now and debating replacing thru wall AC, stove, fridge but don’t want to do all. If I paint the fridge, stove could stay, AC though really should be replaced since knob isn’t working so he was turning it on and off by plugging it in and unplugging it. --24.61.xxx.xx
