I was having a bathtub replaced and the plumber mentioned that the shower valve body is old and they could replace it for $250 (marked down from their normal $500 price) with a new Moen Posi-temp. The current valve is attached to CPVC pipe right now.

Obviously I would rather not pay that amount for this if it can be avoided. And I've heard some bad things about the Positemp valve.

Is the Delta Multichoice valve body any good? Or some other option? I was thinking of going with Delta parts for this shower instead of Moen. Thanks.

Seems pretty expensive to me. What's the cost of your preferred valve at the store? How much time for them to replace it?

If they are already there, they will likely use sharkbites on the lines, so maybe 10 minutes to replace it?

What does that work out per hour for the labor?

As a second thought, why not get the valve and sharkbites yourself and just switch it out on your own? --172.222.xx.x

What is see is 2 things happened with tub/shower valves in last 6-8 years, the manufacturers had to design around the -low lead- brass and the water saver rules so the prices jumped a lot, I use 2 handle valves so the flow and temp can be controlled - modern single handles are unable to control flow only the mix ratio hot/cold. --76.188.xxx.xx

The valve and trim kit runs around $125. Then he is charging you another $125 for the install. Depending on how long it's going to take, the price of $250 is no that much out of line. --47.156.xx.xx

I use Symonds anti scald mixing valve with the internal shut offs. You can get them as tub & shower or shower only. They come with a variety of finishes & styles. They are made in MA & should be available nation wide. --96.237.xx.xx

I love my Delta's.

That being said, Moen makes some good valves as well. I don't know much about the posi-temp, but I know of some 40-year old Moen valves that have given zero trouble. --70.178.x.xx

Those fancy valves cost me a bunch of money for the expensive plumber to come out. I would just try to switch back to the two handles if you can. I have no problem with the tub at my house for years and the rentals are always squirting, or frozen or stuck open. Save yourself. --173.61.xxx.xx

I like the ones with the anti-scalding mixing feature, but don't have a favorite. --68.10.xxx.x

I've been using the plumbing store Delta single handle shower valve.

You can replace all the guts without any special tools in just a few minutes. And the main body probably lasts 50 years or more. --69.80.xx.xxx

We use the Delta 134900.

Is a very good price. But also has the chrome handle which last longer/stays cleaner than the crystal ones.

Comes with the multi-valve. You can still use this valve body. And just buy the trim kit if ever you want to upgrade to a different delta style. OR even if you want to go to the one handle knobs with separate adjustments for the flow and the temp.

They seem to be holding up well. Think it has been about 10 years we have been using them.

Very rare have had to replace a cartridge.

But 2 things to note.

Use plumbers grease on the set screw threads for the chrome handle. Seems to corrode in place.

These are better when you do have to replace a cartridge. Quick and easy. Big plus is you dont have to remove the trim ring. So dont have to tell a tenant to wait until the caulk dries.

I cant comment to much on the other brands. We just use all Delta on just tub/shower faucets. So all have the same.

If it aint broke - don't fix it

You should always have great access on the back side of the fixture for easy swap out in future if you have a failure --24.62.xxx.xxx

I am not a delta fan (or jacuzzi) have had problems w the foundation line of kitchen faucets and today a shower. Tenant calls water won't turn off, I go remove the guts and swap in New cartridge. It doesn't work. These things twist apart in 2 pieces. I try all combinations, no luck. Then I take the new washers and springs and out them in the old guts and it finally shuts off. Go figure, new 40 dollar part.

Ties into the other thread. I diy. I'm handy and if I can't figure it out and my lifeline call can't help then the unavailable expensive plumber gets a call (very rarely). I show good faith to tenant taking care of problem (water won't shut off is a biggie) and save on weekend rates.

J BTW you also heard bad things about cpvc! --99.203.xx.xx
