I am looking at installing waterproof flooring in a rental. I want one continuous floor I can use throughout the whole house that is durable, waterproof and reasonably scratchproof. Anyone use Lumber Liquidators or Lowes products? --172.74.xx.xxx

First a Schluter ditra membrane must be put down then a commercial ceramic or porcelain floor over the membrane. Upfront more labour intensive and will cost more but easy to clean along with will be damaged from cigarettes. View some videos on You tube about ditra membranes and installing ceramic or porcelain tile. A good wet saw is required. For a bathroom they usually have small quantity of ceramic or porcelain tiles at the Habitat for Humanity restores. In commercial building they don't cheap out on flooring as the flooring must be able to take a lot punishment. Laminate is ok if in owner occupied home where people take care. In a rental then 3 years can be expected. --168.244.xx.xx

Caution if planning to install on concrete in basement units. Plenty of moisture comes up through the concrete then gets trapped between waterproof flooring and the concrete. Perfect condition for mold to grow. Home Depot products seem to work well on wooden sub-floors, according to other owners I've talked with. --67.164.xxx.xxx

Most larger complexes are putting in vinyl plank in all rooms. --74.215.xxx.xxx

For a rental I'd use Allure from HD. They have 2 kinds of Allure - snap together and glue strip. You want the glue strip type. Absolutely waterproof, looks nice, easy to install, and great durability.

Allure for sure. BUT as we learned to our chagrin, don't put it over crappy particleboard sub-floor. If there is water (and someday there will be water...) and it gets UNDER the Allure, you won't know about it until the sub-floor starts to bubble and bow...Take the time to put down good subfloor.

I actually stayed in a hotel not too long ago, I forget where or why, that had Luxury Vinyl Plank throughout, with two small throw rugs on each side of the bed. The whole room felt cleaner! --50.82.xxx.xx

The answer for you is sheet vinyl. There are very good brands but once a problem occurs in the sheet vinyl, there is no way to fix it without pulling up the whole thing. The best thing for you to do is revise your wish a little. I use vinyl self stick tiles in my kitchens. If a piece gets damaged I can get it up and put a new piece in. So I have to save half a box or so to have a replacement piece. I would want a type from a company who has been around a long time and who will continue to make the same color and type. Commercial is probably the answer for you. Call some tile guys for help --173.61.xxx.xx

I have installed about 20K sq ft of the Allure Grip Stip since 2011. Love it.

If you need to proof the floor, use RedGard or similar, or use a 10mil plastic layer.

The Cali-Bamboo looks good as well, but much more expensive. --64.251.xxx.xxx

Ceramic tile all day long. I installed ceramic tile as long as 20 years ago, it all still looks good. I even put in “planks” of ceramic tile two years ago that looks better than the wood flooring I replaced - yes, we replaced it to the studs, added subfloor, concrete board, then the wood looking plank tile. A brand new wood floor could hardly compare. Real wood will wear out and need sanding, polyurethane, etc. over time. I have heard of allure on this site for years - someone always brings up that if you get water on it/ under it Watch Out. I respect everyone else’s choices, but ceramic tile is my best bet on any floor. --66.87.xxx.xx
