I posted the other day about my coin op dryer not working. You push the start button and it sounds like it starts. Then when you let the button go, it shuts off.

I'm not mechanically inclined whatsoever. Basic car maintenance is about it.

Anyway, I had an appliance repair man there today. He fired it up and could tell the drum wasn't spinning. He took the back cover off and spun the drum as I pushed the start button. A bunch of lint flew out and it fired up, was spinning and blowing hot air out the duct.

He said I need a new motor. I said it's running now.

He said yes, but it won't start again if we open the door.

We opened the door, closed it and it started again. Fired right up. Hot air blowing out the exit duct, drum spinning. I asked if we could just clean it really good. (Someone mentioned that the other day on here)

He said the motor has probably been overheating for so long that it's shot and I'd need a new blower too.

Hmmm. Seems to me that an electric motor is either going to work or it isn't, no in between. Is that a correct assumption? Obviously the blower is working currently.

I'm thinking a few cans of air duster and a good vacuuming and I'm back in business vs $320 that he wants to repair it?

My spider senses are tingling saying all that work is unnecessary. What do you think? --97.35.x.xxx

Wait and see what happens. If it's running today I wouldn't replace it today. --70.178.x.xx

I agree with you, clean it,put it back together and see what happens,if it doesn't work you have a knowledgable repair man,if it works and keeps working don't ever call him again --72.231.xxx.xxx

Be sure to fill it with a full clothes load from the washer to make sure the dryer motor operates under load. --174.200.xx.xxx

My personal residence had a garage door opener that sounded like it was on it's last legs. The home inspector brought it to my attention. I let it go until it finally failed. It never did. 15 years later, the new home owners were told the same thing by their home inspector. It still works to this day.

Maybe all it needed was a good cleaning. However, testing it with a full load does sound like a good idea. I wouldn't worry about it until it fails again. The repair man is probably being thorough. I wouldn't take it as a negative. --108.69.xxx.xxx

As others said, clean it and run it, make sure you test it with a full load of wet clothes. If it works, leave it be. The fact that it had to be spun by hand to work could mean the copper wire windings, or start capacitor are going bad. Electric motors need a nudge to get going, start capacitors provide that electrical nudge. Hopefully it just needs a cleaning, good luck. --174.242.xxx.xxx

I would install a Smoke and C/O detector near to the Laundry area so if a Lint Fire or Motor Coil burn out, it will alert your tenants.

Remember, MOST TENANTS will start a load and leave the rental unattended. Meaning is it worth the risk of a fire and loss of life or property over a "dryer"? I think not.. --47.156.xx.xx

I agree with others it could be a load problem. Repair man is probably going off of what is usually the case. I would clean it and see what happens but you may find that it stops working again soon. --73.120.xx.xxx

That has the symptoms of a failed capacitor all over it, but going off memory, I believe a dryer motor uses a special set of starting windings in lieu of a capacitor. If that’s the case, yes the motor needs to be replaced BUT it’s an easy job.

Navigate to partsdirect dot com and enter the model number of the dryer. Then find the part number for the motor and find it used on eBay. --73.177.xxx.xx

Dryers dont use a cap, they have a start winding and the switch is clogged up with lint, clean it out real well with a crevice tool... --76.188.xxx.xx

Vee, I’m sorry but that simply is not accurate. I have a HotPoint tumble dryer for my tenants use and it absolutely, 100%, has a start capacitor (I’ve replaced it before) I’m not saying every dryer uses a start capacitor, but many manufacturers and models do. --71.248.xxx.xxx

In the apartment buildings had the heavy commercial laundromat type of clothes dryers that use natural gas where the heavy motor is isolated from where lint collects inside the dryer. A air compressor is the best method to clean out then clean up after that. Sometimes can buy a good used laundromat type of clothes dryer on the internet. Those machines are very durable which can take a lot punishment. It will require a 8" vent and a gas line. --147.194.xxx.xx
