With all the legal issues and potential health issues regarding Roundup weed killer, can anyone recommend an effective and safe weed killer for use around the apartment building?

I've used boiling-hot salty water for very small areas, but not for a whole front yard--unfortunately then you're salting the soil.

I've also used industrial strength home and garden vinegar (look on Amazon). This is not the stuff you use on salads! Avoid inhaling or getting it close to your face, as it will feel like it's burning off any nasal hair you have! Again, this could be a problem with your adding this to your soil.

The most effective way is to pull out the weeds by the root. This is best done after a rain, and with the proper tool. If the weeds are invasive, like oxalis, they'll never go away. --68.8.xxx.xxx

Carolyn use to use a flame thrower. Fire maybe not be as safe as weed killer. Why dont you think over the counter weed killer is unsafe for apartment buildings? For yards I use the kind from Lowes that doesn't kill the grass. For sidewalks i just use table salt in the cracks. A little exercise is good for pulling up roots after a rain... walk, bend, pull. --99.203.xx.x

Round up is your safest, best herbicide. The whole vinegar solution is a joke. Flamethrower, fun to play with... But if the weed is big, you just burn the top off and it grows back. Next best chemical is more dangerous than round up. Just apply according to label. Don't drink it, don't take a shower in it ;)

WMH - I don't think a little personal use is the issue. I had about 70 acres of invasives commercially sprayed two summers ago. They used a machine that basically looked like a tank. It shot mist out perhaps 50ish feet each direction. The men used no masks or facial covers. I'd imagine those are the ones potentially getting cancer, not a little hand sprayer in the yard. --72.70.xxx.xx

Here in the desert we don't have grass, but weeds in the decorative gravel is a mess if it gets out of control. In areas where we will never plant we scatter water softner salt granules like grass seed. Basically salting the earth. Privides multi year weed reduction. But NOTHING will grow!

We spot spray every few weeks or a few days after rain, keepsnour yards weeds free.

Dino,

From my landscaping guy:

#1 is Roundup - the "year long" label. He hits our fence rows in Spring and again in Fall.

Primetrol(spelling?) concentrate from Rural King farm supply store. POTENT STUFF! Use caution when mixing to avoid fumes and splashing.

NO to Burnout, new at Lowes. The weeds turn brown in an hour but come right back with the next rain. Plus it stinks really badly!

Spectricide - the tops turn brown in a day or two but does not kill the root so they come right back.

Here is an alternative... Some generic dicamba (aka 2,4-d) and mix with some Select herbicide. Dicamaba will kill the broad-leaves and select will kill the grass. Just a warning, on hot humid days... Dicamaba like to "walk" off as a gas state. Will do damage down the where the wind blows. Round up won't...

There is liberty (glusinfite) or Interline at rural king. It's kind of like round up, just doesn't locate to the roots as good. But it kills all (non-elective). Does that help? --166.216.xxx.xxx

At my rentals, I am working towards reducing yard maintenance. Two rows of running bond pavers separate the grass from mulched beds. Plants in mulched beds are planted thickly, so plants overlap, shading out weeds. Along the chain link fences, I will ( eventually) run a soldier row of pavers underneath the chain link. Each spring, I but a couple of yards of mulch and top off the mulch at the rentals. At One house, a neighbor gave me one of his homemade dandelion diggers; I showed the tenant how to use it. She does! That neighbor has now been making and giving out the dandelion diggers to neighbors up and down the street. They are using them!

And get one of those kitschy old lady bending over pulling weeds cutouts. They usually come wearing a polka dot dress. I have a living one, those work best. Of course, mine doesn’t wear polka dots, and her name is ....Busy..... --70.92.xxx.xxx

I realize it will be more costly to hire someone to actually pull the weeds from the root but I'm tempted to take a look at that option. Thanks for all the responses.

Dino, I mentioned this before in other discussions of landscape, but it’s worth repeating: take a close look at what very attractive businesses in your area have for landscaping. They want attractive, but easy, easy, easy to maintain. They want cost-effective. They’ve worked with landscape designers to get ‘ right plant, right place,’ where the plants do a better job of crowding out weeds.

In my part of the country, that usually involves a liberal application of mulch each spring, coppicing the shrubs every few years, occasional soil drench for pests, and applications of fertilizer, along with a well-timed program of weed control spray. But, the key is, it’s a whole, integrated approach. Cannot just plant the same plant and expect the same results, need the fertilizer, the mulch, the pruning, et cetera. --70.92.xxx.xxx
