I *know* I have asked this before, but don't remember consensus. Wish we could do polls so I could tally results, but oh well here goes anyway:

Most of our houses are grey or white or blue-ish grey, with white trim. Some have black shutters, some have blue shutters, some have no shutters.

What color front door can we choose that would go with everything?

I have heard Yellow (I think it was a Marketing Guru at a Mr. LL Convention.) I'm not a huge fan of Yellow though - and does it go with grey? Does it go with blue-ish grey?

I don't live in these houses. I would just like to standardize and, especially on the multi-units, have a cohesive look. --50.82.xxx.xx

I've been using a teal door on gray houses with white trim. Everyone loves them.

I've seen a few done in a lighter more aqua color than my teal so that seems to be a popular color as well. --75.89.xx.xxx

Red is a hard color to paint in general, takes multiple coats to look good (as many as 4 or 5!) And it fades fast if exposed to the sun.

I like Aqua AND Teal as colors, Lisa. But there is a house nearby with an Aqua door (and shutters too) and I don't like it at all for some reason. --50.82.xxx.xx

I think yellow would look great and bright red would too depending on the shade of the blue-gray houses.

If you use a darker paint color, use a darker gray primer first. It will cut down on the number of coats you need and the paint won't have that streaky look. We used Sherwin Williams "ultra deep" primer and then used a red paint over top. The red paint shade is actually a Farm and Fleet barn paint that we had SW color match. It has held up beautifully for nearly 10 years. --47.41.xxx.xxx

I should have added that we are going to have to repaint soon, but not because of fading. We just have some tiny areas where the paint surface is starting to peel. --47.41.xxx.xxx

I think a deep red would go well with all of those.

I also like what a rehabber recently did to a house near mine. They painted the front door the exact same color as flowers they planted in front. This happened to be a slightly orangy yellow. It really looked sharp! --68.10.xxx.x

W,

In a beach town I would love to go wild with fun bright colors beachy colors and make the front door a feature - a reason to choose MY home.

My community is very conservative.

I consider front door paint as temporary. The door must always look clean and fresh so it gets painted frequently at turnover. Fade, dirt, rubs, shoe marks...

Here in Indiana my pro designer likes soft or muted yellows for flips. (Sherwin Tea Light Yellow is one) Brightens the front, adds happiness, looks inviting, and draws the eye.

For years we used a deep red wine burgundy color but those look outdated now.

Brad, you'd be surprised how hostile some locals are to bright beach colors! They say, "This is not the Caribbean! This is the Outer Banks!" The old Nag's Head houses are all weathered brown/grey. And locals HATE Winks Stores (which are all over) as they are such a bright distinctive yellow.

We painted our four studios in bright colors: bright blue, hot pink, lime green and coral. NOW people love them but at the time, they said they looked like Easter Eggs.

But I like the idea of colorful doors! Except I can hear the sniping now: "But *I* wanted the BLUE door not the YELLOW door..." --50.82.xxx.xx

Blue and grey are very much neutrals, any color would go with them. Yellow goes nicely with both. I probably would not do yellow myself, since I don't like the color that much, but it does come in so many shades from lemon to orangy.

I would do a different shade of blue, maybe a brighter one, or a darker or lighter than the siding. I try not to paint south or west facing ones with a dark color, it tends to heat up too much. Yet, don't go to light as it shows the dirt. There is purple door on DD's grey house with white trim. I like that, not a glaring purple, but a shade that is a bit greyed.

First decide if you want it stand out and be very different, or if you just want it a little different. I am not big on the bright and different myself. --108.4.xxx.xx

I've used a sort of denim blue. Not bright and a bit darker. It looked really good in combination with several different colors. It's good with all grays and it looked good on a vanilla cream colored house.

Sorry. I can't remember the color name or stock number and the paint can is long since lost.

A tenant wanted a burgundy color on a gray house and it looked great but was awful to work with. I won't try to use that color again. --98.146.xxx.xxx

No burgundy or maroon or red. Although they have their place, not on my houses.

I don't want to *stand out* necessarily, LindaJ. But I wouldn't mind saying, "It's the second house on the left with the Yellow (or Blue or Orange) door" if you know what I mean.

Also we have standardized on wall colors and flooring, and pretty much on exterior colors. So why not door color?

I'm sure I would have to roll out a color change slowly, because no matter what color I choose, some tenant will hate it if it's "new to them." If it's already there, though, they won't care! --50.82.xxx.xx

WMH, we can look out of our windows & see the new Wright Bros mural on the side of the Super Wings store. We arrived just as they were finishing it and I must say it was a great improvement over looking at the side of that building previously. It is interesting that the houses in Nags Head are more weathered and natural, I'm not big on far out colors. We can also see the bright pink house on the beach from our upstairs windows. It is for sale for $675,000.00 and no one has grabbed it up yet. When it sells, I hope they paint it a different color. --71.219.xx.xx

W,

Haha! I DO remember other than the giant tourist beach fronts, OBX homes were “ sunbleached driftwood”. The occasionally pop of color on a mailbox or house name/family sign were eye catching.

Maybe faded tangerine or washed out light blue.

Just saw an ad for a Minwax product to make oak look 100 years old.

Pat, you mean the pink house that is IN the water? Flamingo Nest or Rest or something like that? Who would waste money painting that? It's not going to last another decade (although that was said 10 years ago too and it has weathered every storm!) Last man standing for sure. It used to be surrounded by houses just like the rest of the beach. Now it stands alone, IN the ocean. --50.82.xxx.xx

I’m late to the party, but... I’ve been driving through an upscale neighborhood a bit this last week. Seeing some dark, rich blues, almost purple, but, still a deep blue, on medium blue or grey houses that really looks sublime. They also had bits of white, black on trim, shutters, as you mentioned. Another blue that was used very well on a stone house in my neighborhood is a cobalt blue, but, a little darker. Very rich looking. The dark cobalt blue might work on the brownish gray houses.

The aquas and teals can be tricky. You’d want to have a friend with good color sense double check those samples before you did those, perhaps. I wish my neighbor did! (She needed to go darker and richer to work with her gray. Course, maybe I don’t have good color sense, lol!) --172.58.xxx.xx

No, not Pelican's Perch, a few houses closer towards you. It's a salt-box style and brighter pink. We knew 5017 Va Dare (fixer upper) was coming up for sale a couple years ago but found out about the restrictions on building back if anything happens to it, etc. So we passed. We are just too far away to worry about the drama when the storms come.

I like the aqua colored doors, but I don't care for the bright yellow, getting back to doors! --71.219.xx.xx
